Chapter 23Meccan118 Verses

Verse 1

قَدْqadIndeed
أَفْلَحَaflaḥasuccessful
ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَl-mu'minūna(are) the believers

Translation

Indeed successful (are) the believers

Verse 2

ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose who
هُمْhum[they]
فِىfīduring
صَلَاتِهِمْṣalātihimtheir prayers
خَـٰشِعُونَkhāshiʿūna(are) humbly submissive

Translation

Those who [they] during their prayers (are) humbly submissive

Verse 3

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaThose who
هُمْhum[they]
عَنِʿanifrom
ٱللَّغْوِl-laghwithe vain talk
مُعْرِضُونَmuʿ'riḍūnaturn away

Translation

Those who [they] from the vain talk turn away

Verse 4

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaThose who
هُمْhum[they]
لِلزَّكَوٰةِlilzzakatiof purification works
فَـٰعِلُونَfāʿilūna(are) doers

Translation

Those who [they] of purification works (are) doers

Verse 5

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who
هُمْhum[they]
لِفُرُوجِهِمْlifurūjihimof their modesty
حَـٰفِظُونَḥāfiẓūna(are) guardians

Translation

And those who [they] of their modesty (are) guardians

Verse 6

إِلَّاillāExcept
عَلَىٰٓʿalāfrom
أَزْوَٰجِهِمْazwājihimtheir spouses
أَوْawor
مَاmāwhat
مَلَكَتْmalakatpossess
أَيْمَـٰنُهُمْaymānuhumtheir right hands
فَإِنَّهُمْfa-innahumthen indeed, they
غَيْرُghayru(are) not
مَلُومِينَmalūmīnablameworthy

Translation

Except from their spouses or what possess their right hands then indeed, they (are) not blameworthy

Verse 7

فَمَنِfamaniThen whoever
ٱبْتَغَىٰib'taghāseeks
وَرَآءَwarāabeyond
ذَٰلِكَdhālikathat
فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَfa-ulāikathen those
هُمُhumu[they]
ٱلْعَادُونَl-ʿādūna(are) the transgressors

Translation

Then whoever seeks beyond that then those [they] (are) the transgressors

Verse 8

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who
هُمْhum[they]
لِأَمَـٰنَـٰتِهِمْli-amānātihimof their trusts
وَعَهْدِهِمْwaʿahdihimand their promise(s)
رَٰعُونَrāʿūna(are) observers

Translation

And those who [they] of their trusts and their promise(s) (are) observers

Verse 9

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who
هُمْhum[they]
عَلَىٰʿalāover
صَلَوَٰتِهِمْṣalawātihimtheir prayers
يُحَافِظُونَyuḥāfiẓūnathey guard

Translation

And those who [they] over their prayers they guard

Verse 10

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThose
هُمُhumu[they]
ٱلْوَٰرِثُونَl-wārithūna(are) the inheritors

Translation

Those [they] (are) the inheritors

Verse 11

ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaWho
يَرِثُونَyarithūnawill inherit
ٱلْفِرْدَوْسَl-fir'dawsathe Paradise
هُمْhumThey
فِيهَاfīhātherein
خَـٰلِدُونَkhālidūna(will) abide forever

Translation

Who will inherit the Paradise They therein (will) abide forever

Verse 12

وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd indeed
خَلَقْنَاkhalaqnāWe created
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَl-insānathe humankind
مِنminfrom
سُلَـٰلَةٍۢsulālatinan essence
مِّنminof
طِينٍۢṭīninclay

Translation

And indeed We created the humankind from an essence of clay

Verse 13

ثُمَّthummaThen
جَعَلْنَـٰهُjaʿalnāhuWe placed him
نُطْفَةًۭnuṭ'fatan(as) a semen-drop
فِىfīin
قَرَارٍۢqarārina resting place
مَّكِينٍۢmakīninfirm

Translation

Then We placed him (as) a semen-drop in a resting place firm

Verse 14

ثُمَّthummaThen
خَلَقْنَاkhalaqnāWe created
ٱلنُّطْفَةَl-nuṭ'fatathe semen-drop
عَلَقَةًۭʿalaqatan(into) a clinging substance
فَخَلَقْنَاfakhalaqnāthen We created
ٱلْعَلَقَةَl-ʿalaqatathe clinging substance
مُضْغَةًۭmuḍ'ghatan(into) an embryonic lump
فَخَلَقْنَاfakhalaqnāthen We created
ٱلْمُضْغَةَl-muḍ'ghatathe embryonic lump
عِظَـٰمًۭاʿiẓāman(into) bones
فَكَسَوْنَاfakasawnāthen We clothed
ٱلْعِظَـٰمَl-ʿiẓāmathe bones
لَحْمًۭاlaḥman(with) flesh
ثُمَّthummathen
أَنشَأْنَـٰهُanshanāhuWe produce it
خَلْقًاkhalqan(as) a creation
ءَاخَرَ ۚākharaanother
فَتَبَارَكَfatabārakaSo blessed is
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
أَحْسَنُaḥsanu(the) Best
ٱلْخَـٰلِقِينَl-khāliqīna(of) the Creators

Translation

Then We created the semen-drop (into) a clinging substance then We created the clinging substance (into) an embryonic lump then We created the embryonic lump (into) bones then We clothed the bones (with) flesh then We produce it (as) a creation another So blessed is Allah (the) Best (of) the Creators

Verse 15

ثُمَّthummaThen
إِنَّكُمinnakumindeed, you
بَعْدَbaʿdaafter
ذَٰلِكَdhālikathat
لَمَيِّتُونَlamayyitūnasurely (will) die

Translation

Then indeed, you after that surely (will) die

Verse 16

ثُمَّthummaThen
إِنَّكُمْinnakumindeed, you
يَوْمَyawma(on the) Day
ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِl-qiyāmati(of) the Resurrection
تُبْعَثُونَtub'ʿathūnawill be resurrected

Translation

Then indeed, you (on the) Day (of) the Resurrection will be resurrected

Verse 17

وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd indeed
خَلَقْنَاkhalaqnāWe (have) created
فَوْقَكُمْfawqakumabove you
سَبْعَsabʿaseven
طَرَآئِقَṭarāiqapaths
وَمَاwamāand not
كُنَّاkunnāWe are
عَنِʿaniof
ٱلْخَلْقِl-khalqithe creation
غَـٰفِلِينَghāfilīnaunaware

Translation

And indeed We (have) created above you seven paths and not We are of the creation unaware

Verse 18

وَأَنزَلْنَاwa-anzalnāAnd We send down
مِنَminafrom
ٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāithe sky
مَآءًۢmāanwater
بِقَدَرٍۢbiqadarinin (due) measure
فَأَسْكَنَّـٰهُfa-askannāhuthen We cause it to settle
فِىfīin
ٱلْأَرْضِ ۖl-arḍithe earth
وَإِنَّاwa-innāAnd indeed, We
عَلَىٰʿalāon
ذَهَابٍۭdhahābintaking it away
بِهِۦbihitaking it away
لَقَـٰدِرُونَlaqādirūnasurely (are) Able

Translation

And We send down from the sky water in (due) measure then We cause it to settle in the earth And indeed, We on taking it away taking it away surely (are) Able

Verse 19

فَأَنشَأْنَاfa-anshanāThen We produced
لَكُمlakumfor you
بِهِۦbihiby it
جَنَّـٰتٍۢjannātingardens
مِّنminof date-palms
نَّخِيلٍۢnakhīlinof date-palms
وَأَعْنَـٰبٍۢwa-aʿnābinand grapevines
لَّكُمْlakumfor you
فِيهَاfīhāin it
فَوَٰكِهُfawākihu(are) fruits
كَثِيرَةٌۭkathīratunabundant
وَمِنْهَاwamin'hāand from them
تَأْكُلُونَtakulūnayou eat

Translation

Then We produced for you by it gardens of date-palms of date-palms and grapevines for you in it (are) fruits abundant and from them you eat

Verse 20

وَشَجَرَةًۭwashajaratanAnd a tree
تَخْرُجُtakhruju(that) springs forth
مِنminfrom
طُورِṭūriMount Sinai
سَيْنَآءَsaynāaMount Sinai
تَنۢبُتُtanbutu(which) produces
بِٱلدُّهْنِbil-duh'nioil
وَصِبْغٍۢwaṣib'ghinand a relish
لِّلْـَٔاكِلِينَlil'ākilīnafor those who eat

Translation

And a tree (that) springs forth from Mount Sinai Mount Sinai (which) produces oil and a relish for those who eat

Verse 21

وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed
لَكُمْlakumfor you
فِىfīin
ٱلْأَنْعَـٰمِl-anʿāmithe cattle
لَعِبْرَةًۭ ۖlaʿib'ratansurely, (is) a lesson
نُّسْقِيكُمnus'qīkumWe give you drink
مِّمَّاmimmāfrom what
فِىfī(is) in
بُطُونِهَاbuṭūnihātheir bellies
وَلَكُمْwalakumand for you
فِيهَاfīhāin them
مَنَـٰفِعُmanāfiʿu(are) benefits
كَثِيرَةٌۭkathīratunmany
وَمِنْهَاwamin'hāand of them
تَأْكُلُونَtakulūnayou eat

Translation

And indeed for you in the cattle surely, (is) a lesson We give you drink from what (is) in their bellies and for you in them (are) benefits many and of them you eat

Verse 22

وَعَلَيْهَاwaʿalayhāAnd on them
وَعَلَىwaʿalāand on
ٱلْفُلْكِl-ful'ki[the] ships
تُحْمَلُونَtuḥ'malūnayou are carried

Translation

And on them and on [the] ships you are carried

Verse 23

وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd verily
أَرْسَلْنَاarsalnāWe sent
نُوحًاnūḥanNuh
إِلَىٰilāto
قَوْمِهِۦqawmihihis people
فَقَالَfaqālaand he said
يَـٰقَوْمِyāqawmiO my people
ٱعْبُدُوا۟uʿ'budūWorship
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
مَاmānot
لَكُمlakumfor you
مِّنْmin(is) any
إِلَـٰهٍilāhingod
غَيْرُهُۥٓ ۖghayruhuother than Him
أَفَلَاafalāThen will not
تَتَّقُونَtattaqūnayou fear

Translation

And verily We sent Nuh to his people and he said O my people Worship Allah not for you (is) any god other than Him Then will not you fear

Verse 24

فَقَالَfaqālaBut said
ٱلْمَلَؤُا۟l-mala-uthe chiefs
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(of) those who
كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieved
مِنminamong
قَوْمِهِۦqawmihihis people
مَاmāThis is not
هَـٰذَآhādhāThis is not
إِلَّاillābut
بَشَرٌۭbasharuna man
مِّثْلُكُمْmith'lukumlike you
يُرِيدُyurīduhe wishes
أَنanto
يَتَفَضَّلَyatafaḍḍalaassert (his) superiority
عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykumover you
وَلَوْwalawand if
شَآءَshāaAllah had willed
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah had willed
لَأَنزَلَla-anzalasurely He (would have) sent down
مَلَـٰٓئِكَةًۭmalāikatanAngels
مَّاmāNot
سَمِعْنَاsamiʿ'nāwe heard
بِهَـٰذَاbihādhāof this
فِىٓfīfrom
ءَابَآئِنَاābāināour forefathers
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīnaour forefathers

Translation

But said the chiefs (of) those who disbelieved among his people This is not This is not but a man like you he wishes to assert (his) superiority over you and if Allah had willed Allah had willed surely He (would have) sent down Angels Not we heard of this from our forefathers our forefathers

Verse 25

إِنْinNot
هُوَhuwahe
إِلَّاillā(is) but
رَجُلٌۢrajuluna man
بِهِۦbihiin him
جِنَّةٌۭjinnatun(is) madness
فَتَرَبَّصُوا۟fatarabbaṣūso wait
بِهِۦbihiconcerning him
حَتَّىٰḥattāuntil
حِينٍۢḥīnina time

Translation

Not he (is) but a man in him (is) madness so wait concerning him until a time

Verse 26

قَالَqālaHe said
رَبِّrabbiMy Lord
ٱنصُرْنِىunṣur'nīHelp me
بِمَاbimābecause
كَذَّبُونِkadhabūnithey deny me

Translation

He said My Lord Help me because they deny me

Verse 27

فَأَوْحَيْنَآfa-awḥaynāSo We inspired
إِلَيْهِilayhito him
أَنِaniThat
ٱصْنَعِiṣ'naʿiconstruct
ٱلْفُلْكَl-ful'kathe ship
بِأَعْيُنِنَاbi-aʿyunināunder Our eyes
وَوَحْيِنَاwawaḥyināand Our inspiration
فَإِذَاfa-idhāthen when
جَآءَjāacomes
أَمْرُنَاamrunāOur Command
وَفَارَwafāraand gushes forth
ٱلتَّنُّورُ ۙl-tanūruthe oven
فَٱسْلُكْfa-us'lukthen put
فِيهَاfīhāinto it
مِنminof
كُلٍّۢkullinevery (kind)
زَوْجَيْنِzawjayni(of) mates
ٱثْنَيْنِith'naynitwo
وَأَهْلَكَwa-ahlakaand your family
إِلَّاillāexcept
مَنmanthose
سَبَقَsabaqa(has) preceded
عَلَيْهِʿalayhiagainst whom
ٱلْقَوْلُl-qawluthe Word
مِنْهُمْ ۖmin'humthereof
وَلَاwalāAnd (do) not
تُخَـٰطِبْنِىtukhāṭib'nīaddress Me
فِىfīconcerning
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
ظَلَمُوٓا۟ ۖẓalamūwronged
إِنَّهُمinnahumindeed, they
مُّغْرَقُونَmugh'raqūna(are) the ones to be drowned

Translation

So We inspired to him That construct the ship under Our eyes and Our inspiration then when comes Our Command and gushes forth the oven then put into it of every (kind) (of) mates two and your family except those (has) preceded against whom the Word thereof And (do) not address Me concerning those who wronged indeed, they (are) the ones to be drowned

Verse 28

فَإِذَاfa-idhāAnd when
ٱسْتَوَيْتَis'tawaytayou (have) boarded
أَنتَantayou
وَمَنwamanand whoever
مَّعَكَmaʿaka(is) with you
عَلَىʿalā[on]
ٱلْفُلْكِl-ful'kithe ship
فَقُلِfaqulithen say
ٱلْحَمْدُl-ḥamduPraise
لِلَّهِlillahi(be) to Allah
ٱلَّذِىalladhīWho
نَجَّىٰنَاnajjānā(has) saved us
مِنَminafrom
ٱلْقَوْمِl-qawmithe people
ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَl-ẓālimīnathe wrongdoers

Translation

And when you (have) boarded you and whoever (is) with you [on] the ship then say Praise (be) to Allah Who (has) saved us from the people the wrongdoers

Verse 29

وَقُلwaqulAnd say
رَّبِّrabbiMy Lord
أَنزِلْنِىanzil'nīcause me to land
مُنزَلًۭاmunzalan(at) a landing place
مُّبَارَكًۭاmubārakanblessed
وَأَنتَwa-antaand You
خَيْرُkhayru(are) the Best
ٱلْمُنزِلِينَl-munzilīna(of) those who cause to land.'

Translation

And say My Lord cause me to land (at) a landing place blessed and You (are) the Best (of) those who cause to land.'

Verse 30

إِنَّinnaIndeed
فِىfīin
ذَٰلِكَdhālikathat
لَـَٔايَـٰتٍۢlaāyātinsurely (are) Signs
وَإِنwa-inand indeed
كُنَّاkunnāWe are
لَمُبْتَلِينَlamub'talīnasurely testing

Translation

Indeed in that surely (are) Signs and indeed We are surely testing

Verse 31

ثُمَّthummaThen
أَنشَأْنَاanshanāWe produced
مِنۢminafter them
بَعْدِهِمْbaʿdihimafter them
قَرْنًاqarnana generation
ءَاخَرِينَākharīnaanother

Translation

Then We produced after them after them a generation another

Verse 32

فَأَرْسَلْنَاfa-arsalnāAnd We sent
فِيهِمْfīhimamong them
رَسُولًۭاrasūlana Messenger
مِّنْهُمْmin'humfrom themselves
أَنِani[that]
ٱعْبُدُوا۟uʿ'budūWorship
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
مَاmānot
لَكُمlakumfor you
مِّنْmin(is) any
إِلَـٰهٍilāhingod
غَيْرُهُۥٓ ۖghayruhuother than Him
أَفَلَاafalāThen will not
تَتَّقُونَtattaqūnayou fear

Translation

And We sent among them a Messenger from themselves [that] Worship Allah not for you (is) any god other than Him Then will not you fear

Verse 33

وَقَالَwaqālaAnd said
ٱلْمَلَأُl-mala-uthe chiefs
مِنminof
قَوْمِهِqawmihihis people
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnawho
كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieved
وَكَذَّبُوا۟wakadhabūand denied
بِلِقَآءِbiliqāi(the) meeting
ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِl-ākhirati(of) the Hereafter
وَأَتْرَفْنَـٰهُمْwa-atrafnāhumwhile We had given them luxury
فِىfīin
ٱلْحَيَوٰةِl-ḥayatithe life
ٱلدُّنْيَاl-dun'yā(of) the world
مَاmāNot
هَـٰذَآhādhā(is) this
إِلَّاillābut
بَشَرٌۭbasharuna man
مِّثْلُكُمْmith'lukumlike you
يَأْكُلُyakuluHe eats
مِمَّاmimmāof what
تَأْكُلُونَtakulūnayou eat
مِنْهُmin'hu[from it]
وَيَشْرَبُwayashrabuand he drinks
مِمَّاmimmāof what
تَشْرَبُونَtashrabūnayou drink

Translation

And said the chiefs of his people who disbelieved and denied (the) meeting (of) the Hereafter while We had given them luxury in the life (of) the world Not (is) this but a man like you He eats of what you eat [from it] and he drinks of what you drink

Verse 34

وَلَئِنْwala-inAnd surely if
أَطَعْتُمaṭaʿtumyou obey
بَشَرًۭاbasharana man
مِّثْلَكُمْmith'lakumlike you
إِنَّكُمْinnakumindeed, you
إِذًۭاidhanthen
لَّخَـٰسِرُونَlakhāsirūnasurely (will be) losers

Translation

And surely if you obey a man like you indeed, you then surely (will be) losers

Verse 35

أَيَعِدُكُمْayaʿidukumDoes he promise you
أَنَّكُمْannakumthat you
إِذَاidhāwhen
مِتُّمْmittumyou are dead
وَكُنتُمْwakuntumand you become
تُرَابًۭاturābandust
وَعِظَـٰمًاwaʿiẓāmanand bones
أَنَّكُمannakumthat you
مُّخْرَجُونَmukh'rajūna(will be) brought forth

Translation

Does he promise you that you when you are dead and you become dust and bones that you (will be) brought forth

Verse 36

۞ هَيْهَاتَhayhātaFar-(fetched)
هَيْهَاتَhayhātafar-(fetched)
لِمَاlimāis what
تُوعَدُونَtūʿadūnayou are promised

Translation

Far-(fetched) far-(fetched) is what you are promised

Verse 37

إِنْinNot
هِىَhiyait
إِلَّاillā(is) but
حَيَاتُنَاḥayātunāour life
ٱلدُّنْيَاl-dun'yā(of) the world
نَمُوتُnamūtuwe die
وَنَحْيَاwanaḥyāand we live
وَمَاwamāand not
نَحْنُnaḥnuwe
بِمَبْعُوثِينَbimabʿūthīna(will be) resurrected

Translation

Not it (is) but our life (of) the world we die and we live and not we (will be) resurrected

Verse 38

إِنْinNot
هُوَhuwa(is) he
إِلَّاillābut
رَجُلٌrajuluna man
ٱفْتَرَىٰif'tarāwho (has) invented
عَلَىʿalāabout
ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
كَذِبًۭاkadhibana lie
وَمَاwamāand not
نَحْنُnaḥnuwe
لَهُۥlahu(in) him
بِمُؤْمِنِينَbimu'minīna(are) believers

Translation

Not (is) he but a man who (has) invented about Allah a lie and not we (in) him (are) believers

Verse 39

قَالَqālaHe said
رَبِّrabbiMy Lord
ٱنصُرْنِىunṣur'nīHelp me
بِمَاbimābecause
كَذَّبُونِkadhabūnithey deny me

Translation

He said My Lord Help me because they deny me

Verse 40

قَالَqālaHe said
عَمَّاʿammāAfter a little while
قَلِيلٍۢqalīlinAfter a little while
لَّيُصْبِحُنَّlayuṣ'biḥunnasurely they will become
نَـٰدِمِينَnādimīnaregretful

Translation

He said After a little while After a little while surely they will become regretful

Verse 41

فَأَخَذَتْهُمُfa-akhadhathumuSo seized them
ٱلصَّيْحَةُl-ṣayḥatuthe awful cry
بِٱلْحَقِّbil-ḥaqiin truth
فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْfajaʿalnāhumand We made them
غُثَآءًۭ ۚghuthāan(as) rubbish of dead leaves
فَبُعْدًۭاfabuʿ'danSo away
لِّلْقَوْمِlil'qawmiwith the people
ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَl-ẓālimīnathe wrongdoers

Translation

So seized them the awful cry in truth and We made them (as) rubbish of dead leaves So away with the people the wrongdoers

Verse 42

ثُمَّthummaThen
أَنشَأْنَاanshanāWe produced
مِنۢminafter them
بَعْدِهِمْbaʿdihimafter them
قُرُونًاqurūnana generation
ءَاخَرِينَākharīnaanother

Translation

Then We produced after them after them a generation another

Verse 43

مَاmāNot
تَسْبِقُtasbiqucan precede
مِنْminany
أُمَّةٍummatinnation
أَجَلَهَاajalahāits term
وَمَاwamāand not
يَسْتَـْٔخِرُونَyastakhirūnathey (can) delay (it)

Translation

Not can precede any nation its term and not they (can) delay (it)

Verse 44

ثُمَّthummaThen
أَرْسَلْنَاarsalnāWe sent
رُسُلَنَاrusulanāOur Messengers
تَتْرَا ۖtatrā(in) succession
كُلَّkullaEvery time
مَاmāEvery time
جَآءَjāacame
أُمَّةًۭummatan(to) a nation
رَّسُولُهَاrasūluhāits Messenger
كَذَّبُوهُ ۚkadhabūhuthey denied him
فَأَتْبَعْنَاfa-atbaʿnāso We made (them) follow
بَعْضَهُمbaʿḍahumsome of them
بَعْضًۭاbaʿḍanothers
وَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْwajaʿalnāhumand We made them
أَحَادِيثَ ۚaḥādīthanarrations
فَبُعْدًۭاfabuʿ'danSo away
لِّقَوْمٍۢliqawminwith a people
لَّاlānot
يُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūnathey believe

Translation

Then We sent Our Messengers (in) succession Every time Every time came (to) a nation its Messenger they denied him so We made (them) follow some of them others and We made them narrations So away with a people not they believe

Verse 45

ثُمَّthummaThen
أَرْسَلْنَاarsalnāWe sent
مُوسَىٰmūsāMusa
وَأَخَاهُwa-akhāhuand his brother
هَـٰرُونَhārūnaHarun
بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَاbiāyātināwith Our Signs
وَسُلْطَـٰنٍۢwasul'ṭāninand an authority
مُّبِينٍmubīninclear

Translation

Then We sent Musa and his brother Harun with Our Signs and an authority clear

Verse 46

إِلَىٰilāTo
فِرْعَوْنَfir'ʿawnaFiraun
وَمَلَإِي۟هِۦwamala-ihiand his chiefs
فَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟fa-is'takbarūbut they behaved arrogantly
وَكَانُوا۟wakānūand they were
قَوْمًاqawmana people
عَالِينَʿālīnahaughty

Translation

To Firaun and his chiefs but they behaved arrogantly and they were a people haughty

Verse 47

فَقَالُوٓا۟faqālūThen they said
أَنُؤْمِنُanu'minuShall we believe
لِبَشَرَيْنِlibasharayni(in) two men
مِثْلِنَاmith'linālike ourselves
وَقَوْمُهُمَاwaqawmuhumāwhile their people
لَنَاlanāfor us
عَـٰبِدُونَʿābidūna(are) slaves

Translation

Then they said Shall we believe (in) two men like ourselves while their people for us (are) slaves

Verse 48

فَكَذَّبُوهُمَاfakadhabūhumāSo they denied them
فَكَانُوا۟fakānūand they became
مِنَminaof
ٱلْمُهْلَكِينَl-muh'lakīnathose who were destroyed

Translation

So they denied them and they became of those who were destroyed

Verse 49

وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd verily
ءَاتَيْنَاātaynāWe gave
مُوسَىmūsāMusa
ٱلْكِتَـٰبَl-kitābathe Scripture
لَعَلَّهُمْlaʿallahumso that they may
يَهْتَدُونَyahtadūnabe guided

Translation

And verily We gave Musa the Scripture so that they may be guided

Verse 50

وَجَعَلْنَاwajaʿalnāAnd We made
ٱبْنَib'na(the) son
مَرْيَمَmaryama(of) Maryam
وَأُمَّهُۥٓwa-ummahuand his mother
ءَايَةًۭāyatana Sign
وَءَاوَيْنَـٰهُمَآwaāwaynāhumāand We sheltered them
إِلَىٰilāto
رَبْوَةٍۢrabwatina high ground
ذَاتِdhātiof tranquility
قَرَارٍۢqarārinof tranquility
وَمَعِينٍۢwamaʿīninand water springs

Translation

And We made (the) son (of) Maryam and his mother a Sign and We sheltered them to a high ground of tranquility of tranquility and water springs

Verse 51

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO Messengers
ٱلرُّسُلُl-rusuluO Messengers
كُلُوا۟kulūEat
مِنَminaof
ٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتِl-ṭayibātithe good things
وَٱعْمَلُوا۟wa-iʿ'malūand do
صَـٰلِحًا ۖṣāliḥanrighteous (deeds)
إِنِّىinnīIndeed, I Am
بِمَاbimāof what
تَعْمَلُونَtaʿmalūnayou do
عَلِيمٌۭʿalīmunAll-Knower

Translation

O Messengers O Messengers Eat of the good things and do righteous (deeds) Indeed, I Am of what you do All-Knower

Verse 52

وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed
هَـٰذِهِۦٓhādhihithis
أُمَّتُكُمْummatukumyour religion
أُمَّةًۭummatan(is) religion
وَٰحِدَةًۭwāḥidatanone
وَأَنَا۠wa-anāAnd I Am
رَبُّكُمْrabbukumyour Lord
فَٱتَّقُونِfa-ittaqūniso fear Me

Translation

And indeed this your religion (is) religion one And I Am your Lord so fear Me

Verse 53

فَتَقَطَّعُوٓا۟fataqaṭṭaʿūBut they cut off
أَمْرَهُمamrahumtheir affair (of unity)
بَيْنَهُمْbaynahumbetween them
زُبُرًۭا ۖzuburan(into) sects
كُلُّkullueach
حِزْبٍۭḥiz'binfaction
بِمَاbimāin what
لَدَيْهِمْladayhimthey have
فَرِحُونَfariḥūnarejoicing

Translation

But they cut off their affair (of unity) between them (into) sects each faction in what they have rejoicing

Verse 54

فَذَرْهُمْfadharhumSo leave them
فِىfīin
غَمْرَتِهِمْghamratihimtheir confusion
حَتَّىٰḥattāuntil
حِينٍḥīnina time

Translation

So leave them in their confusion until a time

Verse 55

أَيَحْسَبُونَayaḥsabūnaDo they think
أَنَّمَاannamāthat what
نُمِدُّهُمnumidduhumWe extend to them
بِهِۦbihi[with it]
مِنminof
مَّالٍۢmālinwealth
وَبَنِينَwabanīnaand children

Translation

Do they think that what We extend to them [with it] of wealth and children

Verse 56

نُسَارِعُnusāriʿuWe hasten
لَهُمْlahumto them
فِىfīin
ٱلْخَيْرَٰتِ ۚl-khayrātithe good
بَلbalNay
لَّاlānot
يَشْعُرُونَyashʿurūnathey perceive

Translation

We hasten to them in the good Nay not they perceive

Verse 57

إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
هُمhum[they]
مِّنْminfrom
خَشْيَةِkhashyati(the) fear
رَبِّهِمrabbihim(of) their Lord
مُّشْفِقُونَmush'fiqūna(are) cautious

Translation

Indeed those who [they] from (the) fear (of) their Lord (are) cautious

Verse 58

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those
هُمhum[they]
بِـَٔايَـٰتِbiāyātiin (the) Signs
رَبِّهِمْrabbihim(of) their Lord
يُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūnabelieve

Translation

And those [they] in (the) Signs (of) their Lord believe

Verse 59

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those
هُمhum[they]
بِرَبِّهِمْbirabbihimwith their Lord
لَاlā(do) not
يُشْرِكُونَyush'rikūnaassociate partners

Translation

And those [they] with their Lord (do) not associate partners

Verse 60

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who
يُؤْتُونَyu'tūnagive
مَآmāwhat
ءَاتَوا۟ātawthey give
وَّقُلُوبُهُمْwaqulūbuhumwhile their hearts
وَجِلَةٌwajilatun(are) fearful
أَنَّهُمْannahumbecause they
إِلَىٰilāto
رَبِّهِمْrabbihimtheir Lord
رَٰجِعُونَrājiʿūna(will) return

Translation

And those who give what they give while their hearts (are) fearful because they to their Lord (will) return

Verse 61

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāika(It is) those
يُسَـٰرِعُونَyusāriʿūnawho hasten
فِىfīin
ٱلْخَيْرَٰتِl-khayrātithe good (deeds)
وَهُمْwahumand they
لَهَاlahāin them
سَـٰبِقُونَsābiqūna(are) foremost

Translation

(It is) those who hasten in the good (deeds) and they in them (are) foremost

Verse 62

وَلَاwalāAnd not
نُكَلِّفُnukallifuWe burden
نَفْسًاnafsanany soul
إِلَّاillāexcept
وُسْعَهَا ۖwus'ʿahā(to) its capacity
وَلَدَيْنَاwaladaynāand with Us
كِتَـٰبٌۭkitābun(is) a Record
يَنطِقُyanṭiqu(which) speaks
بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚbil-ḥaqiwith the truth
وَهُمْwahumand they
لَاlā(will) not
يُظْلَمُونَyuẓ'lamūnabe wronged

Translation

And not We burden any soul except (to) its capacity and with Us (is) a Record (which) speaks with the truth and they (will) not be wronged

Verse 63

بَلْbalNay
قُلُوبُهُمْqulūbuhumtheir hearts
فِىfī(are) in
غَمْرَةٍۢghamratinconfusion
مِّنْminover
هَـٰذَاhādhāthis
وَلَهُمْwalahumand for them
أَعْمَـٰلٌۭaʿmālun(are) deeds
مِّنminbesides
دُونِdūnibesides
ذَٰلِكَdhālikathat
هُمْhumthey
لَهَاlahāfor it
عَـٰمِلُونَʿāmilūna(are) doers

Translation

Nay their hearts (are) in confusion over this and for them (are) deeds besides besides that they for it (are) doers

Verse 64

حَتَّىٰٓḥattāUntil
إِذَآidhāwhen
أَخَذْنَاakhadhnāWe seize
مُتْرَفِيهِمmut'rafīhimtheir affluent ones
بِٱلْعَذَابِbil-ʿadhābiwith the punishment
إِذَاidhābehold
هُمْhumThey
يَجْـَٔرُونَyajarūnacry for help

Translation

Until when We seize their affluent ones with the punishment behold They cry for help

Verse 65

لَاlā(Do) not
تَجْـَٔرُوا۟tajarūcry for help
ٱلْيَوْمَ ۖl-yawmatoday
إِنَّكُمinnakumIndeed, you
مِّنَّاminnāfrom Us
لَاlānot
تُنصَرُونَtunṣarūnawill be helped

Translation

(Do) not cry for help today Indeed, you from Us not will be helped

Verse 66

قَدْqadVerily
كَانَتْkānatwere
ءَايَـٰتِىāyātīMy Verses
تُتْلَىٰtut'lārecited
عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykumto you
فَكُنتُمْfakuntumbut you used
عَلَىٰٓʿalā(to) on
أَعْقَـٰبِكُمْaʿqābikumyour heels
تَنكِصُونَtankiṣūnaturn back

Translation

Verily were My Verses recited to you but you used (to) on your heels turn back

Verse 67

مُسْتَكْبِرِينَmus'takbirīna(Being) arrogant
بِهِۦbihiabout it
سَـٰمِرًۭاsāmiranconversing by night
تَهْجُرُونَtahjurūnaspeaking evil

Translation

(Being) arrogant about it conversing by night speaking evil

Verse 68

أَفَلَمْafalamThen, do not
يَدَّبَّرُوا۟yaddabbarūthey ponder
ٱلْقَوْلَl-qawlathe Word
أَمْamor
جَآءَهُمjāahumhas come to them
مَّاmāwhat
لَمْlamnot
يَأْتِyati(had) come
ءَابَآءَهُمُābāahumu(to) their forefathers
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīna(to) their forefathers

Translation

Then, do not they ponder the Word or has come to them what not (had) come (to) their forefathers (to) their forefathers

Verse 69

أَمْamOr
لَمْlam(do) not
يَعْرِفُوا۟yaʿrifūthey recognize
رَسُولَهُمْrasūlahumtheir Messenger
فَهُمْfahumso they
لَهُۥlahu(are) rejecting him
مُنكِرُونَmunkirūna(are) rejecting him

Translation

Or (do) not they recognize their Messenger so they (are) rejecting him (are) rejecting him

Verse 70

أَمْamOr
يَقُولُونَyaqūlūnathey say
بِهِۦbihiIn him
جِنَّةٌۢ ۚjinnatun(is) madness
بَلْbalNay
جَآءَهُمjāahumhe brought them
بِٱلْحَقِّbil-ḥaqithe truth
وَأَكْثَرُهُمْwa-aktharuhumbut most of them
لِلْحَقِّlil'ḥaqqito the truth
كَـٰرِهُونَkārihūna(are) averse

Translation

Or they say In him (is) madness Nay he brought them the truth but most of them to the truth (are) averse

Verse 71

وَلَوِwalawiBut if
ٱتَّبَعَittabaʿa(had) followed
ٱلْحَقُّl-ḥaquthe truth
أَهْوَآءَهُمْahwāahumtheir desires
لَفَسَدَتِlafasadatisurely (would) have been corrupted
ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتُl-samāwātuthe heavens
وَٱلْأَرْضُwal-arḍuand the earth
وَمَنwamanand whoever
فِيهِنَّ ۚfīhinna(is) therein
بَلْbalNay
أَتَيْنَـٰهُمataynāhumWe have brought them
بِذِكْرِهِمْbidhik'rihimtheir reminder
فَهُمْfahumbut they
عَنʿanfrom
ذِكْرِهِمdhik'rihimtheir reminder
مُّعْرِضُونَmuʿ'riḍūna(are) turning away

Translation

But if (had) followed the truth their desires surely (would) have been corrupted the heavens and the earth and whoever (is) therein Nay We have brought them their reminder but they from their reminder (are) turning away

Verse 72

أَمْamOr
تَسْـَٔلُهُمْtasaluhumyou ask them
خَرْجًۭاkharjan(for) a payment
فَخَرَاجُfakharājuBut the payment
رَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lord
خَيْرٌۭ ۖkhayrun(is) best
وَهُوَwahuwaand He
خَيْرُkhayru(is) the Best
ٱلرَّٰزِقِينَl-rāziqīna(of) the Providers

Translation

Or you ask them (for) a payment But the payment (of) your Lord (is) best and He (is) the Best (of) the Providers

Verse 73

وَإِنَّكَwa-innakaAnd indeed, you
لَتَدْعُوهُمْlatadʿūhumcertainly call them
إِلَىٰilāto
صِرَٰطٍۢṣirāṭin(the) Path
مُّسْتَقِيمٍۢmus'taqīminStraight

Translation

And indeed, you certainly call them to (the) Path Straight

Verse 74

وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
لَاlā(do) not
يُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūnabelieve
بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِbil-ākhiratiin the Hereafter
عَنِʿanifrom
ٱلصِّرَٰطِl-ṣirāṭithe path
لَنَـٰكِبُونَlanākibūnasurely (are) deviating

Translation

And indeed those who (do) not believe in the Hereafter from the path surely (are) deviating

Verse 75

۞ وَلَوْwalawAnd if
رَحِمْنَـٰهُمْraḥim'nāhumWe had mercy on them
وَكَشَفْنَاwakashafnāand We removed
مَاmāwhat
بِهِمbihim(was) on them
مِّنminof
ضُرٍّۢḍurrin(the) hardship
لَّلَجُّوا۟lalajjūsurely they would persist
فِىfīin
طُغْيَـٰنِهِمْṭugh'yānihimtheir transgression
يَعْمَهُونَyaʿmahūnawandering blindly

Translation

And if We had mercy on them and We removed what (was) on them of (the) hardship surely they would persist in their transgression wandering blindly

Verse 76

وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd verily
أَخَذْنَـٰهُمakhadhnāhumWe seized them
بِٱلْعَذَابِbil-ʿadhābiwith the punishment
فَمَاfamābut not
ٱسْتَكَانُوا۟is'takānūthey submit
لِرَبِّهِمْlirabbihimto their Lord
وَمَاwamāand not
يَتَضَرَّعُونَyataḍarraʿūnathey supplicate humbly

Translation

And verily We seized them with the punishment but not they submit to their Lord and not they supplicate humbly

Verse 77

حَتَّىٰٓḥattāUntil
إِذَاidhāwhen
فَتَحْنَاfataḥnāWe opened
عَلَيْهِمʿalayhimfor them
بَابًۭاbābana gate
ذَاdhāof a punishment
عَذَابٍۢʿadhābinof a punishment
شَدِيدٍshadīdinsevere
إِذَاidhābehold
هُمْhumThey
فِيهِfīhiin it
مُبْلِسُونَmub'lisūna(will be in) despair

Translation

Until when We opened for them a gate of a punishment of a punishment severe behold They in it (will be in) despair

Verse 78

وَهُوَwahuwaAnd He
ٱلَّذِىٓalladhī(is) the One Who
أَنشَأَansha-aproduced
لَكُمُlakumufor you
ٱلسَّمْعَl-samʿathe hearing
وَٱلْأَبْصَـٰرَwal-abṣāraand the sight
وَٱلْأَفْـِٔدَةَ ۚwal-afidataand the feeling
قَلِيلًۭاqalīlanlittle
مَّاmā(is) what
تَشْكُرُونَtashkurūnayou give thanks

Translation

And He (is) the One Who produced for you the hearing and the sight and the feeling little (is) what you give thanks

Verse 79

وَهُوَwahuwaAnd He
ٱلَّذِىalladhī(is) the One Who
ذَرَأَكُمْdhara-akummultiplied you
فِىfīin
ٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earth
وَإِلَيْهِwa-ilayhiand to Him
تُحْشَرُونَtuḥ'sharūnayou will be gathered

Translation

And He (is) the One Who multiplied you in the earth and to Him you will be gathered

Verse 80

وَهُوَwahuwaAnd He
ٱلَّذِىalladhī(is) the One Who
يُحْىِۦyuḥ'yīgives life
وَيُمِيتُwayumītuand causes death
وَلَهُwalahuand for Him
ٱخْتِلَـٰفُikh'tilāfu(is the) alternation
ٱلَّيْلِal-layli(of) the night
وَٱلنَّهَارِ ۚwal-nahāriand the day
أَفَلَاafalāThen will not
تَعْقِلُونَtaʿqilūnayou reason

Translation

And He (is) the One Who gives life and causes death and for Him (is the) alternation (of) the night and the day Then will not you reason

Verse 81

بَلْbalNay
قَالُوا۟qālūthey say
مِثْلَmith'la(the) like
مَاmā(of) what
قَالَqālasaid
ٱلْأَوَّلُونَl-awalūnathe former (people)

Translation

Nay they say (the) like (of) what said the former (people)

Verse 82

قَالُوٓا۟qālūThey said
أَءِذَاa-idhāWhat! When
مِتْنَاmit'nāwe are dead
وَكُنَّاwakunnāand become
تُرَابًۭاturābandust
وَعِظَـٰمًاwaʿiẓāmanand bones
أَءِنَّاa-innāwould we
لَمَبْعُوثُونَlamabʿūthūnasurely be resurrected

Translation

They said What! When we are dead and become dust and bones would we surely be resurrected

Verse 83

لَقَدْlaqadVerily
وُعِدْنَاwuʿid'nāwe have been promised
نَحْنُnaḥnu[we]
وَءَابَآؤُنَاwaābāunāand our forefathers
هَـٰذَاhādhāthis
مِنminbefore
قَبْلُqablubefore
إِنْinnot
هَـٰذَآhādhā(is) this
إِلَّآillābut
أَسَـٰطِيرُasāṭīru(the) tales
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīna(of) the former (people)

Translation

Verily we have been promised [we] and our forefathers this before before not (is) this but (the) tales (of) the former (people)

Verse 84

قُلqulSay
لِّمَنِlimaniTo whom (belongs)
ٱلْأَرْضُl-arḍuthe earth
وَمَنwamanand whoever
فِيهَآfīhā(is) in it
إِنinif
كُنتُمْkuntumyou
تَعْلَمُونَtaʿlamūnaknow

Translation

Say To whom (belongs) the earth and whoever (is) in it if you know

Verse 85

سَيَقُولُونَsayaqūlūnaThey will say
لِلَّهِ ۚlillahiTo Allah
قُلْqulSay
أَفَلَاafalāThen will not
تَذَكَّرُونَtadhakkarūnayou remember

Translation

They will say To Allah Say Then will not you remember

Verse 86

قُلْqulSay
مَنmanWho
رَّبُّrabbu(is the) Lord
ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwāti(of) the seven heavens
ٱلسَّبْعِl-sabʿi(of) the seven heavens
وَرَبُّwarabbuand (the) Lord
ٱلْعَرْشِl-ʿarshi(of) the Throne
ٱلْعَظِيمِl-ʿaẓīmithe Great

Translation

Say Who (is the) Lord (of) the seven heavens (of) the seven heavens and (the) Lord (of) the Throne the Great

Verse 87

سَيَقُولُونَsayaqūlūnaThey will say
لِلَّهِ ۚlillahiAllah
قُلْqulSay
أَفَلَاafalāThen will not
تَتَّقُونَtattaqūnayou fear (Him)

Translation

They will say Allah Say Then will not you fear (Him)

Verse 88

قُلْqulSay
مَنۢmanWho is (it)
بِيَدِهِۦbiyadihiin Whose Hand(s)
مَلَكُوتُmalakūtu(is the) dominion
كُلِّkulli(of) all
شَىْءٍۢshayinthings
وَهُوَwahuwaand He
يُجِيرُyujīruprotects
وَلَاwalāand no (one)
يُجَارُyujāru(can) be protected
عَلَيْهِʿalayhiagainst Him
إِنinIf
كُنتُمْkuntumyou
تَعْلَمُونَtaʿlamūnaknow

Translation

Say Who is (it) in Whose Hand(s) (is the) dominion (of) all things and He protects and no (one) (can) be protected against Him If you know

Verse 89

سَيَقُولُونَsayaqūlūnaThey will say
لِلَّهِ ۚlillahiAllah
قُلْqulSay
فَأَنَّىٰfa-annāThen how
تُسْحَرُونَtus'ḥarūnaare you deluded

Translation

They will say Allah Say Then how are you deluded

Verse 90

بَلْbalNay
أَتَيْنَـٰهُمataynāhumWe (have) brought them
بِٱلْحَقِّbil-ḥaqithe truth
وَإِنَّهُمْwa-innahumbut indeed, they
لَكَـٰذِبُونَlakādhibūnasurely, (are) liars

Translation

Nay We (have) brought them the truth but indeed, they surely, (are) liars

Verse 91

مَاmāNot
ٱتَّخَذَittakhadhaAllah has taken
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah has taken
مِنminany
وَلَدٍۢwaladinson
وَمَاwamāand not
كَانَkānais
مَعَهُۥmaʿahuwith Him
مِنْminany
إِلَـٰهٍ ۚilāhingod
إِذًۭاidhanThen
لَّذَهَبَladhahabasurely (would have) taken away
كُلُّkullueach
إِلَـٰهٍۭilāhingod
بِمَاbimāwhat
خَلَقَkhalaqahe created
وَلَعَلَاwalaʿalāand surely would have overpowered
بَعْضُهُمْbaʿḍuhumsome of them
عَلَىٰʿalā[on]
بَعْضٍۢ ۚbaʿḍinothers
سُبْحَـٰنَsub'ḥānaGlory be
ٱللَّهِl-lahi(to) Allah
عَمَّاʿammāabove what
يَصِفُونَyaṣifūnathey attribute

Translation

Not Allah has taken Allah has taken any son and not is with Him any god Then surely (would have) taken away each god what he created and surely would have overpowered some of them [on] others Glory be (to) Allah above what they attribute

Verse 92

عَـٰلِمِʿālimiKnower
ٱلْغَيْبِl-ghaybi(of) the unseen
وَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِwal-shahādatiand the witnessed
فَتَعَـٰلَىٰfataʿālāexalted is He
عَمَّاʿammāabove what
يُشْرِكُونَyush'rikūnathey associate

Translation

Knower (of) the unseen and the witnessed exalted is He above what they associate

Verse 93

قُلqulSay
رَّبِّrabbiMy Lord
إِمَّاimmāIf
تُرِيَنِّىturiyannīYou should show me
مَاmāwhat
يُوعَدُونَyūʿadūnathey are promised

Translation

Say My Lord If You should show me what they are promised

Verse 94

رَبِّrabbiMy Lord
فَلَاfalāthen (do) not
تَجْعَلْنِىtajʿalnīplace me
فِىfīamong
ٱلْقَوْمِl-qawmithe people
ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَl-ẓālimīnathe wrongdoers

Translation

My Lord then (do) not place me among the people the wrongdoers

Verse 95

وَإِنَّاwa-innāAnd indeed We
عَلَىٰٓʿalāon
أَنanthat
نُّرِيَكَnuriyakaWe show you
مَاmāwhat
نَعِدُهُمْnaʿiduhumWe have promised them
لَقَـٰدِرُونَlaqādirūnasurely able

Translation

And indeed We on that We show you what We have promised them surely able

Verse 96

ٱدْفَعْid'faʿRepel
بِٱلَّتِىbi-allatīby that
هِىَhiyawhich
أَحْسَنُaḥsanu(is) best
ٱلسَّيِّئَةَ ۚl-sayi-atathe evil
نَحْنُnaḥnuWe
أَعْلَمُaʿlamuknow best
بِمَاbimāof what
يَصِفُونَyaṣifūnathey attribute

Translation

Repel by that which (is) best the evil We know best of what they attribute

Verse 97

وَقُلwaqulAnd say
رَّبِّrabbiMy Lord
أَعُوذُaʿūdhuI seek refuge
بِكَbikain You
مِنْminfrom
هَمَزَٰتِhamazāti(the) suggestions
ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينِl-shayāṭīni(of) the evil ones

Translation

And say My Lord I seek refuge in You from (the) suggestions (of) the evil ones

Verse 98

وَأَعُوذُwa-aʿūdhuAnd I seek refuge
بِكَbikain You
رَبِّrabbiMy Lord
أَنanLest
يَحْضُرُونِyaḥḍurūnithey be present with me

Translation

And I seek refuge in You My Lord Lest they be present with me

Verse 99

حَتَّىٰٓḥattāUntil
إِذَاidhāwhen
جَآءَjāacomes
أَحَدَهُمُaḥadahumu(to) one of them
ٱلْمَوْتُl-mawtuthe death
قَالَqālahe says
رَبِّrabbiMy Lord
ٱرْجِعُونِir'jiʿūniSend me back

Translation

Until when comes (to) one of them the death he says My Lord Send me back

Verse 100

لَعَلِّىٓlaʿallīThat I may
أَعْمَلُaʿmaludo
صَـٰلِحًۭاṣāliḥanrighteous (deeds)
فِيمَاfīmāin what
تَرَكْتُ ۚtaraktuI left behind
كَلَّآ ۚkallāNo
إِنَّهَاinnahāIndeed, it
كَلِمَةٌkalimatun(is) a word
هُوَhuwahe
قَآئِلُهَا ۖqāiluhāspeaks it
وَمِنwaminand before them
وَرَآئِهِمwarāihimand before them
بَرْزَخٌbarzakhun(is) a barrier
إِلَىٰilātill
يَوْمِyawmi(the) Day
يُبْعَثُونَyub'ʿathūnathey are resurrected

Translation

That I may do righteous (deeds) in what I left behind No Indeed, it (is) a word he speaks it and before them and before them (is) a barrier till (the) Day they are resurrected

Verse 101

فَإِذَاfa-idhāSo when
نُفِخَnufikhais blown
فِىfīin
ٱلصُّورِl-ṣūrithe trumpet
فَلَآfalāthen not
أَنسَابَansāba(there) will be relationship
بَيْنَهُمْbaynahumamong them
يَوْمَئِذٍۢyawma-idhinthat Day
وَلَاwalāand not
يَتَسَآءَلُونَyatasāalūnawill they ask each other

Translation

So when is blown in the trumpet then not (there) will be relationship among them that Day and not will they ask each other

Verse 102

فَمَنfamanThen (the one) whose
ثَقُلَتْthaqulat(are) heavy
مَوَٰزِينُهُۥmawāzīnuhuhis scales
فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَfa-ulāikathen those
هُمُhumuthey
ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَl-muf'liḥūna(are) the successful

Translation

Then (the one) whose (are) heavy his scales then those they (are) the successful

Verse 103

وَمَنْwamanBut (the one) whose
خَفَّتْkhaffat(are) light
مَوَٰزِينُهُۥmawāzīnuhuhis scales
فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَfa-ulāikathen those
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathey [who]
خَسِرُوٓا۟khasirūhave lost
أَنفُسَهُمْanfusahumtheir souls
فِىfīin
جَهَنَّمَjahannamaHell
خَـٰلِدُونَkhālidūnathey (will) abide forever

Translation

But (the one) whose (are) light his scales then those they [who] have lost their souls in Hell they (will) abide forever

Verse 104

تَلْفَحُtalfaḥuWill burn
وُجُوهَهُمُwujūhahumutheir faces
ٱلنَّارُl-nāruthe Fire
وَهُمْwahumand they
فِيهَاfīhāin it
كَـٰلِحُونَkāliḥūna(will) grin with displaced lips

Translation

Will burn their faces the Fire and they in it (will) grin with displaced lips

Verse 105

أَلَمْalamWere not
تَكُنْtakunWere not
ءَايَـٰتِىāyātīMy Verses
تُتْلَىٰtut'lārecited
عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykumto you
فَكُنتُمfakuntumand you used (to)
بِهَاbihādeny them
تُكَذِّبُونَtukadhibūnadeny them

Translation

Were not Were not My Verses recited to you and you used (to) deny them deny them

Verse 106

قَالُوا۟qālūThey (will) say
رَبَّنَاrabbanāOur Lord
غَلَبَتْghalabatOvercame
عَلَيْنَاʿalaynā[on] us
شِقْوَتُنَاshiq'watunāour wretchedness
وَكُنَّاwakunnāand we were
قَوْمًۭاqawmana people
ضَآلِّينَḍāllīnaastray

Translation

They (will) say Our Lord Overcame [on] us our wretchedness and we were a people astray

Verse 107

رَبَّنَآrabbanāOur Lord
أَخْرِجْنَاakhrij'nāBring us out
مِنْهَاmin'hāfrom it
فَإِنْfa-inthen if
عُدْنَاʿud'nāwe return
فَإِنَّاfa-innāthen indeed, we
ظَـٰلِمُونَẓālimūna(would be) wrongdoers

Translation

Our Lord Bring us out from it then if we return then indeed, we (would be) wrongdoers

Verse 108

قَالَqālaHe (will) say
ٱخْسَـُٔوا۟ikh'saūRemain despised
فِيهَاfīhāin it
وَلَاwalāand (do) not
تُكَلِّمُونِtukallimūnispeak to Me

Translation

He (will) say Remain despised in it and (do) not speak to Me

Verse 109

إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed
كَانَkāna(there) was
فَرِيقٌۭfarīquna party
مِّنْminof
عِبَادِىʿibādīMy slaves
يَقُولُونَyaqūlūna(who) said
رَبَّنَآrabbanāOur Lord
ءَامَنَّاāmannāWe believe
فَٱغْفِرْfa-igh'firso forgive
لَنَاlanāus
وَٱرْحَمْنَاwa-ir'ḥamnāand have mercy on us
وَأَنتَwa-antaand You
خَيْرُkhayru(are) best
ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَl-rāḥimīna(of) those who show mercy

Translation

Indeed (there) was a party of My slaves (who) said Our Lord We believe so forgive us and have mercy on us and You (are) best (of) those who show mercy

Verse 110

فَٱتَّخَذْتُمُوهُمْfa-ittakhadhtumūhumBut you took them
سِخْرِيًّاsikh'riyyan(in) mockery
حَتَّىٰٓḥattāuntil
أَنسَوْكُمْansawkumthey made you forget
ذِكْرِىdhik'rīMy remembrance
وَكُنتُمwakuntumand you used (to)
مِّنْهُمْmin'humat them
تَضْحَكُونَtaḍḥakūnalaugh

Translation

But you took them (in) mockery until they made you forget My remembrance and you used (to) at them laugh

Verse 111

إِنِّىinnīIndeed, I
جَزَيْتُهُمُjazaytuhumuhave rewarded them
ٱلْيَوْمَl-yawmathis Day
بِمَاbimābecause
صَبَرُوٓا۟ṣabarūthey were patient
أَنَّهُمْannahumindeed, they
هُمُhumu[they]
ٱلْفَآئِزُونَl-fāizūna(are) the successful ones

Translation

Indeed, I have rewarded them this Day because they were patient indeed, they [they] (are) the successful ones

Verse 112

قَـٰلَqālaHe will say
كَمْkamHow long
لَبِثْتُمْlabith'tumdid you remain
فِىfīin
ٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earth
عَدَدَʿadada(in) number
سِنِينَsinīna(of) years

Translation

He will say How long did you remain in the earth (in) number (of) years

Verse 113

قَالُوا۟qālūThey will say
لَبِثْنَاlabith'nāWe remained
يَوْمًاyawmana day
أَوْawor
بَعْضَbaʿḍaa part
يَوْمٍۢyawmin(of) a day
فَسْـَٔلِfasalibut ask
ٱلْعَآدِّينَl-ʿādīnathose who keep count

Translation

They will say We remained a day or a part (of) a day but ask those who keep count

Verse 114

قَـٰلَqālaHe will say
إِنinNot
لَّبِثْتُمْlabith'tumyou stayed
إِلَّاillābut
قَلِيلًۭا ۖqalīlana little
لَّوْlawif
أَنَّكُمْannakumonly you
كُنتُمْkuntum[you]
تَعْلَمُونَtaʿlamūnaknew

Translation

He will say Not you stayed but a little if only you [you] knew

Verse 115

أَفَحَسِبْتُمْafaḥasib'tumThen did you think
أَنَّمَاannamāthat
خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْkhalaqnākumWe created you
عَبَثًۭاʿabathanuselessly
وَأَنَّكُمْwa-annakumand that you
إِلَيْنَاilaynāto Us
لَاlānot
تُرْجَعُونَtur'jaʿūnawill be returned

Translation

Then did you think that We created you uselessly and that you to Us not will be returned

Verse 116

فَتَعَـٰلَىfataʿālāSo exalted is
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
ٱلْمَلِكُl-malikuthe King
ٱلْحَقُّ ۖl-ḥaquthe Truth
لَآlā(There is) no
إِلَـٰهَilāhagod
إِلَّاillāexcept
هُوَhuwaHim
رَبُّrabbu(the) Lord
ٱلْعَرْشِl-ʿarshi(of) the Throne
ٱلْكَرِيمِl-karīmiHonorable

Translation

So exalted is Allah the King the Truth (There is) no god except Him (the) Lord (of) the Throne Honorable

Verse 117

وَمَنwamanAnd whoever
يَدْعُyadʿuinvokes
مَعَmaʿawith
ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
إِلَـٰهًاilāhangod
ءَاخَرَākharaother
لَاlāno
بُرْهَـٰنَbur'hānaproof
لَهُۥlahufor him
بِهِۦbihiin it
فَإِنَّمَاfa-innamāThen only
حِسَابُهُۥḥisābuhuhis account
عِندَʿinda(is) with
رَبِّهِۦٓ ۚrabbihihis Lord
إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, [he]
لَاlānot
يُفْلِحُyuf'liḥuwill succeed
ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَl-kāfirūnathe disbelievers

Translation

And whoever invokes with Allah god other no proof for him in it Then only his account (is) with his Lord Indeed, [he] not will succeed the disbelievers

Verse 118

وَقُلwaqulAnd say
رَّبِّrabbiMy Lord
ٱغْفِرْigh'firForgive
وَٱرْحَمْwa-ir'ḥamand have mercy
وَأَنتَwa-antaand You
خَيْرُkhayru(are the) Best
ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَl-rāḥimīna(of) those who show mercy

Translation

And say My Lord Forgive and have mercy and You (are the) Best (of) those who show mercy
