Chapter 38Meccan88 Verses

Verse 1

صٓ ۚsadSaad
وَٱلْقُرْءَانِwal-qur'āniBy the Quran
ذِىdhīfull (of) reminder
ٱلذِّكْرِl-dhik'rifull (of) reminder

Translation

Saad By the Quran full (of) reminder full (of) reminder

Verse 2

بَلِbaliNay
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieve
فِى(are) in
عِزَّةٍۢʿizzatinself-glory
وَشِقَاقٍۢwashiqāqinand opposition

Translation

Nay those who disbelieve (are) in self-glory and opposition

Verse 3

كَمْkamHow many
أَهْلَكْنَاahlaknāWe destroyed
مِنminbefore them
قَبْلِهِمqablihimbefore them
مِّنminof
قَرْنٍۢqarnina generation
فَنَادَوا۟fanādawthen they called out
وَّلَاتَwalātawhen there (was) no longer
حِينَḥīnatime
مَنَاصٍۢmanāṣin(for) escape

Translation

How many We destroyed before them before them of a generation then they called out when there (was) no longer time (for) escape

Verse 4

وَعَجِبُوٓا۟waʿajibūAnd they wonder
أَنanthat
جَآءَهُمjāahumhas come to them
مُّنذِرٌۭmundhiruna warner
مِّنْهُمْ ۖmin'humfrom themselves
وَقَالَwaqālaAnd said
ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَl-kāfirūnathe disbelievers
هَـٰذَاhādhāThis
سَـٰحِرٌۭsāḥirun(is) a magician
كَذَّابٌkadhābuna liar

Translation

And they wonder that has come to them a warner from themselves And said the disbelievers This (is) a magician a liar

Verse 5

أَجَعَلَajaʿalaHas he made
ٱلْـَٔالِهَةَl-ālihatathe gods
إِلَـٰهًۭاilāhan(into) one god
وَٰحِدًا ۖwāḥidan(into) one god
إِنَّinnaIndeed
هَـٰذَاhādhāthis
لَشَىْءٌlashayon(is) certainly a thing
عُجَابٌۭʿujābuncurious

Translation

Has he made the gods (into) one god (into) one god Indeed this (is) certainly a thing curious

Verse 6

وَٱنطَلَقَwa-inṭalaqaAnd went forth
ٱلْمَلَأُl-mala-uthe chiefs
مِنْهُمْmin'humamong them
أَنِanithat
ٱمْشُوا۟im'shūContinue
وَٱصْبِرُوا۟wa-iṣ'birūand be patient
عَلَىٰٓʿalāover
ءَالِهَتِكُمْ ۖālihatikumyour gods
إِنَّinnaIndeed
هَـٰذَاhādhāthis
لَشَىْءٌۭlashayon(is) certainly a thing
يُرَادُyurāduintended

Translation

And went forth the chiefs among them that Continue and be patient over your gods Indeed this (is) certainly a thing intended

Verse 7

مَاNot
سَمِعْنَاsamiʿ'nāwe heard
بِهَـٰذَاbihādhāof this
فِىin
ٱلْمِلَّةِl-milatithe religion
ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِl-ākhiratithe last
إِنْinNot
هَـٰذَآhādhā(is) this
إِلَّاillābut
ٱخْتِلَـٰقٌikh'tilāquna fabrication

Translation

Not we heard of this in the religion the last Not (is) this but a fabrication

Verse 8

أَءُنزِلَa-unzilaHas been revealed
عَلَيْهِʿalayhito him
ٱلذِّكْرُl-dhik'ruthe Message
مِنۢminfrom
بَيْنِنَا ۚbaynināamong us
بَلْbalNay
هُمْhumThey
فِى(are) in
شَكٍّۢshakkindoubt
مِّنminabout
ذِكْرِى ۖdhik'rīMy Message
بَلbalNay
لَّمَّاlammānot yet
يَذُوقُوا۟yadhūqūthey have tasted
عَذَابِʿadhābiMy punishment

Translation

Has been revealed to him the Message from among us Nay They (are) in doubt about My Message Nay not yet they have tasted My punishment

Verse 9

أَمْamOr
عِندَهُمْʿindahumhave they
خَزَآئِنُkhazāinu(the) treasures
رَحْمَةِraḥmati(of the) Mercy
رَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lord
ٱلْعَزِيزِl-ʿazīzithe All-Mighty
ٱلْوَهَّابِl-wahābithe Bestower

Translation

Or have they (the) treasures (of the) Mercy (of) your Lord the All-Mighty the Bestower

Verse 10

أَمْamOr
لَهُمlahumfor them
مُّلْكُmul'ku(is the) dominion
ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwāti(of) the heavens
وَٱلْأَرْضِwal-arḍiand the earth
وَمَاwamāand whatever
بَيْنَهُمَا ۖbaynahumā(is) between them
فَلْيَرْتَقُوا۟falyartaqūThen let them ascend
فِىby
ٱلْأَسْبَـٰبِl-asbābithe means

Translation

Or for them (is the) dominion (of) the heavens and the earth and whatever (is) between them Then let them ascend by the means

Verse 11

جُندٌۭjundunSoldiers
مَّاthere
هُنَالِكَhunālikathere
مَهْزُومٌۭmahzūmun(they will be) defeated
مِّنَminaamong
ٱلْأَحْزَابِl-aḥzābithe companies

Translation

Soldiers there there (they will be) defeated among the companies

Verse 12

كَذَّبَتْkadhabatDenied
قَبْلَهُمْqablahumbefore them
قَوْمُqawmu(the) people
نُوحٍۢnūḥin(of) Nuh
وَعَادٌۭwaʿādunand Aad
وَفِرْعَوْنُwafir'ʿawnuand Firaun
ذُوdhū(the) owner
ٱلْأَوْتَادِl-awtādi(of) the stakes

Translation

Denied before them (the) people (of) Nuh and Aad and Firaun (the) owner (of) the stakes

Verse 13

وَثَمُودُwathamūduAnd Thamud
وَقَوْمُwaqawmuand (the) people
لُوطٍۢlūṭin(of) Lut
وَأَصْحَـٰبُwa-aṣḥābuand (the) companions
لْـَٔيْكَةِ ۚal'aykati(of) the wood
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThose
ٱلْأَحْزَابُl-aḥzābu(were) the companies

Translation

And Thamud and (the) people (of) Lut and (the) companions (of) the wood Those (were) the companies

Verse 14

إِنinNot
كُلٌّkullunall (of them)
إِلَّاillābut
كَذَّبَkadhabadenied
ٱلرُّسُلَl-rusulathe Messengers
فَحَقَّfaḥaqqaso (was) just
عِقَابِʿiqābiMy penalty

Translation

Not all (of them) but denied the Messengers so (was) just My penalty

Verse 15

وَمَاwamāAnd not
يَنظُرُyanẓuruawait
هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِhāulāithese
إِلَّاillābut
صَيْحَةًۭṣayḥatana shout
وَٰحِدَةًۭwāḥidatanone
مَّاnot
لَهَاlahāfor it
مِنminany
فَوَاقٍۢfawāqindelay

Translation

And not await these but a shout one not for it any delay

Verse 16

وَقَالُوا۟waqālūAnd they say
رَبَّنَاrabbanāOur Lord
عَجِّلʿajjilHasten
لَّنَاlanāfor us
قِطَّنَاqiṭṭanāour share
قَبْلَqablabefore
يَوْمِyawmi(the) Day
ٱلْحِسَابِl-ḥisābi(of) the Account

Translation

And they say Our Lord Hasten for us our share before (the) Day (of) the Account

Verse 17

ٱصْبِرْiṣ'birBe patient
عَلَىٰʿalāover
مَاwhat
يَقُولُونَyaqūlūnathey say
وَٱذْكُرْwa-udh'kurand remember
عَبْدَنَاʿabdanāOur slave
دَاوُۥدَdāwūdaDawood
ذَاdhāthe possessor of strength
ٱلْأَيْدِ ۖl-aydithe possessor of strength
إِنَّهُۥٓinnahuIndeed, he (was)
أَوَّابٌawwābunrepeatedly turning

Translation

Be patient over what they say and remember Our slave Dawood the possessor of strength the possessor of strength Indeed, he (was) repeatedly turning

Verse 18

إِنَّاinnāIndeed, We
سَخَّرْنَاsakharnāsubjected
ٱلْجِبَالَl-jibālathe mountains
مَعَهُۥmaʿahuwith him
يُسَبِّحْنَyusabbiḥ'naglorifying
بِٱلْعَشِىِّbil-ʿashiyiin the evening
وَٱلْإِشْرَاقِwal-ish'rāqiand [the] sunrise

Translation

Indeed, We subjected the mountains with him glorifying in the evening and [the] sunrise

Verse 19

وَٱلطَّيْرَwal-ṭayraAnd the birds
مَحْشُورَةًۭ ۖmaḥshūratanassembled
كُلٌّۭkullunall
لَّهُۥٓlahuwith him
أَوَّابٌۭawwābunrepeatedly turning

Translation

And the birds assembled all with him repeatedly turning

Verse 20

وَشَدَدْنَاwashadadnāAnd We strengthened
مُلْكَهُۥmul'kahuhis kingdom
وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُwaātaynāhuand We gave him
ٱلْحِكْمَةَl-ḥik'mata[the] wisdom
وَفَصْلَwafaṣlaand decisive
ٱلْخِطَابِl-khiṭābispeech

Translation

And We strengthened his kingdom and We gave him [the] wisdom and decisive speech

Verse 21

۞ وَهَلْwahalAnd has (there)
أَتَىٰكَatākacome to you
نَبَؤُا۟naba-u(the) news
ٱلْخَصْمِl-khaṣmi(of) the litigants
إِذْidhwhen
تَسَوَّرُوا۟tasawwarūthey climbed over the wall
ٱلْمِحْرَابَl-miḥ'rāba(of) the chamber

Translation

And has (there) come to you (the) news (of) the litigants when they climbed over the wall (of) the chamber

Verse 22

إِذْidhWhen
دَخَلُوا۟dakhalūthey entered
عَلَىٰʿalāupon
دَاوُۥدَdāwūdaDawood
فَفَزِعَfafaziʿaand he was afraid
مِنْهُمْ ۖmin'humof them
قَالُوا۟qālūthey said
لَا(Do) not
تَخَفْ ۖtakhaffear
خَصْمَانِkhaṣmāni(We are) two litigants
بَغَىٰbaghāhas wronged
بَعْضُنَاbaʿḍunāone of us
عَلَىٰʿalāto
بَعْضٍۢbaʿḍinanother
فَٱحْكُمfa-uḥ'kumso judge
بَيْنَنَاbaynanābetween us
بِٱلْحَقِّbil-ḥaqiin truth
وَلَاwalāand (do) not
تُشْطِطْtush'ṭiṭbe unjust
وَٱهْدِنَآwa-ih'dināand guide us
إِلَىٰilāto
سَوَآءِsawāian even
ٱلصِّرَٰطِl-ṣirāṭi[the] path

Translation

When they entered upon Dawood and he was afraid of them they said (Do) not fear (We are) two litigants has wronged one of us to another so judge between us in truth and (do) not be unjust and guide us to an even [the] path

Verse 23

إِنَّinnaIndeed
هَـٰذَآhādhāthis
أَخِىakhī(is) my brother
لَهُۥlahuhe has
تِسْعٌۭtis'ʿunninety-nine
وَتِسْعُونَwatis'ʿūnaninety-nine
نَعْجَةًۭnaʿjatanewe(s)
وَلِىَwaliyawhile I have
نَعْجَةٌۭnaʿjatunewe
وَٰحِدَةٌۭwāḥidatunone
فَقَالَfaqālaso he said
أَكْفِلْنِيهَاakfil'nīhāEntrust her to me
وَعَزَّنِىwaʿazzanīand he overpowered me
فِىin
ٱلْخِطَابِl-khiṭābi[the] speech

Translation

Indeed this (is) my brother he has ninety-nine ninety-nine ewe(s) while I have ewe one so he said Entrust her to me and he overpowered me in [the] speech

Verse 24

قَالَqālaHe said
لَقَدْlaqadCertainly
ظَلَمَكَẓalamakahe has wronged you
بِسُؤَالِbisuāliby demanding
نَعْجَتِكَnaʿjatikayour ewe
إِلَىٰilāto
نِعَاجِهِۦ ۖniʿājihihis ewes
وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed
كَثِيرًۭاkathīranmany
مِّنَminaof
ٱلْخُلَطَآءِl-khulaṭāithe partners
لَيَبْغِىlayabghīcertainly oppress
بَعْضُهُمْbaʿḍuhumsome of them
عَلَىٰʿalā[on]
بَعْضٍbaʿḍinanother
إِلَّاillāexcept
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieve
وَعَمِلُوا۟waʿamilūand do
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِl-ṣāliḥātirighteous deeds
وَقَلِيلٌۭwaqalīlunand few
مَّا(are) they
هُمْ ۗhum(are) they
وَظَنَّwaẓannaAnd became certain
دَاوُۥدُdāwūduDawood
أَنَّمَاannamāthat
فَتَنَّـٰهُfatannāhuWe (had) tried him
فَٱسْتَغْفَرَfa-is'taghfaraand he asked forgiveness
رَبَّهُۥrabbahu(of) his Lord
وَخَرَّwakharraand fell down
رَاكِعًۭاrākiʿanbowing
وَأَنَابَ ۩wa-anābaand turned in repentance

Translation

He said Certainly he has wronged you by demanding your ewe to his ewes And indeed many of the partners certainly oppress some of them [on] another except those who believe and do righteous deeds and few (are) they (are) they And became certain Dawood that We (had) tried him and he asked forgiveness (of) his Lord and fell down bowing and turned in repentance

Verse 25

فَغَفَرْنَاfaghafarnāSo We forgave
لَهُۥlahufor him
ذَٰلِكَ ۖdhālikathat
وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed
لَهُۥlahufor him
عِندَنَاʿindanāwith Us
لَزُلْفَىٰlazul'fāsurely is a near access
وَحُسْنَwaḥus'naand a good
مَـَٔابٍۢmaābinplace of return

Translation

So We forgave for him that And indeed for him with Us surely is a near access and a good place of return

Verse 26

يَـٰدَاوُۥدُyādāwūduO Dawood
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, We
جَعَلْنَـٰكَjaʿalnāka[We] have made you
خَلِيفَةًۭkhalīfatana vicegerent
فِىin
ٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earth
فَٱحْكُمfa-uḥ'kumso judge
بَيْنَbaynabetween
ٱلنَّاسِl-nāsi[the] men
بِٱلْحَقِّbil-ḥaqiin truth
وَلَاwalāand (do) not
تَتَّبِعِtattabiʿifollow
ٱلْهَوَىٰl-hawāthe desire
فَيُضِلَّكَfayuḍillakafor it will lead you astray
عَنʿanfrom
سَبِيلِsabīli(the) way
ٱللَّهِ ۚl-lahi(of) Allah
إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
يَضِلُّونَyaḍillūnago astray
عَنʿanfrom
سَبِيلِsabīli(the) way
ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
لَهُمْlahumfor them
عَذَابٌۭʿadhābun(is) a punishment
شَدِيدٌۢshadīdunsevere
بِمَاbimābecause
نَسُوا۟nasūthey forgot
يَوْمَyawma(the) Day
ٱلْحِسَابِl-ḥisābi(of) Account

Translation

O Dawood Indeed, We [We] have made you a vicegerent in the earth so judge between [the] men in truth and (do) not follow the desire for it will lead you astray from (the) way (of) Allah Indeed those who go astray from (the) way (of) Allah for them (is) a punishment severe because they forgot (the) Day (of) Account

Verse 27

وَمَاwamāAnd not
خَلَقْنَاkhalaqnāWe created
ٱلسَّمَآءَl-samāathe heaven
وَٱلْأَرْضَwal-arḍaand the earth
وَمَاwamāand whatever
بَيْنَهُمَاbaynahumā(is) between them
بَـٰطِلًۭا ۚbāṭilanwithout purpose
ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat
ظَنُّẓannu(is the) assumption
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(of) those who
كَفَرُوا۟ ۚkafarūdisbelieve
فَوَيْلٌۭfawaylunSo woe
لِّلَّذِينَlilladhīnato those
كَفَرُوا۟kafarūwho disbelieve
مِنَminafrom
ٱلنَّارِl-nārithe Fire

Translation

And not We created the heaven and the earth and whatever (is) between them without purpose That (is the) assumption (of) those who disbelieve So woe to those who disbelieve from the Fire

Verse 28

أَمْamOr
نَجْعَلُnajʿalushould We treat
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieve
وَعَمِلُوا۟waʿamilūand do
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِl-ṣāliḥātirighteous deeds
كَٱلْمُفْسِدِينَkal-muf'sidīnalike those who spread corruption
فِىin
ٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earth
أَمْamOr
نَجْعَلُnajʿalushould We treat
ٱلْمُتَّقِينَl-mutaqīnathe pious
كَٱلْفُجَّارِkal-fujārilike the wicked

Translation

Or should We treat those who believe and do righteous deeds like those who spread corruption in the earth Or should We treat the pious like the wicked

Verse 29

كِتَـٰبٌkitābun(This is) a Book
أَنزَلْنَـٰهُanzalnāhuWe have revealed it
إِلَيْكَilaykato you
مُبَـٰرَكٌۭmubārakunblessed
لِّيَدَّبَّرُوٓا۟liyaddabbarūthat they may ponder
ءَايَـٰتِهِۦāyātihi(over) its Verses
وَلِيَتَذَكَّرَwaliyatadhakkaraand may be reminded
أُو۟لُوا۟ulūthose of understanding
ٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِl-albābithose of understanding

Translation

(This is) a Book We have revealed it to you blessed that they may ponder (over) its Verses and may be reminded those of understanding those of understanding

Verse 30

وَوَهَبْنَاwawahabnāAnd We gave
لِدَاوُۥدَlidāwūdato Dawood
سُلَيْمَـٰنَ ۚsulaymānaSulaiman
نِعْمَniʿ'maan excellent
ٱلْعَبْدُ ۖl-ʿabduslave
إِنَّهُۥٓinnahuIndeed, he
أَوَّابٌawwābun(was) one who repeatedly turned

Translation

And We gave to Dawood Sulaiman an excellent slave Indeed, he (was) one who repeatedly turned

Verse 31

إِذْidhWhen
عُرِضَʿuriḍawere displayed
عَلَيْهِʿalayhito him
بِٱلْعَشِىِّbil-ʿashiyiin the afternoon
ٱلصَّـٰفِنَـٰتُl-ṣāfinātuexcellent bred steeds
ٱلْجِيَادُl-jiyāduexcellent bred steeds

Translation

When were displayed to him in the afternoon excellent bred steeds excellent bred steeds

Verse 32

فَقَالَfaqālaAnd he said
إِنِّىٓinnīIndeed, I
أَحْبَبْتُaḥbabtu[I] preferred
حُبَّḥubba(the) love
ٱلْخَيْرِl-khayri(of) the good
عَنʿanover
ذِكْرِdhik'ri(the) remembrance
رَبِّىrabbī(of) my Lord
حَتَّىٰḥattāUntil
تَوَارَتْtawāratthey were hidden
بِٱلْحِجَابِbil-ḥijābiin the veil

Translation

And he said Indeed, I [I] preferred (the) love (of) the good over (the) remembrance (of) my Lord Until they were hidden in the veil

Verse 33

رُدُّوهَاruddūhāReturn them
عَلَىَّ ۖʿalayyato me
فَطَفِقَfaṭafiqaThen he began
مَسْحًۢاmasḥan(to) pass (his hand)
بِٱلسُّوقِbil-sūqiover the legs
وَٱلْأَعْنَاقِwal-aʿnāqiand the necks

Translation

Return them to me Then he began (to) pass (his hand) over the legs and the necks

Verse 34

وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainly
فَتَنَّاfatannāWe tried
سُلَيْمَـٰنَsulaymānaSulaiman
وَأَلْقَيْنَاwa-alqaynāand We placed
عَلَىٰʿalāon
كُرْسِيِّهِۦkur'siyyihihis throne
جَسَدًۭاjasadana body
ثُمَّthummathen
أَنَابَanābahe turned

Translation

And certainly We tried Sulaiman and We placed on his throne a body then he turned

Verse 35

قَالَqālaHe said
رَبِّrabbiO my Lord
ٱغْفِرْigh'firForgive
لِىme
وَهَبْwahaband grant
لِىme
مُلْكًۭاmul'kana kingdom
لَّاnot
يَنۢبَغِىyanbaghī(will) belong
لِأَحَدٍۢli-aḥadinto anyone
مِّنۢminafter me
بَعْدِىٓ ۖbaʿdīafter me
إِنَّكَinnakaIndeed, You
أَنتَanta[You]
ٱلْوَهَّابُl-wahābu(are) the Bestower

Translation

He said O my Lord Forgive me and grant me a kingdom not (will) belong to anyone after me after me Indeed, You [You] (are) the Bestower

Verse 36

فَسَخَّرْنَاfasakharnāThen We subjected
لَهُlahuto him
ٱلرِّيحَl-rīḥathe wind
تَجْرِىtajrīto flow
بِأَمْرِهِۦbi-amrihiby his command
رُخَآءًrukhāangently
حَيْثُḥaythuwherever
أَصَابَaṣābahe directed

Translation

Then We subjected to him the wind to flow by his command gently wherever he directed

Verse 37

وَٱلشَّيَـٰطِينَwal-shayāṭīnaAnd the devils
كُلَّkullaevery
بَنَّآءٍۢbannāinbuilder
وَغَوَّاصٍۢwaghawwāṣinand diver

Translation

And the devils every builder and diver

Verse 38

وَءَاخَرِينَwaākharīnaAnd others
مُقَرَّنِينَmuqarranīnabound
فِىin
ٱلْأَصْفَادِl-aṣfādichains

Translation

And others bound in chains

Verse 39

هَـٰذَاhādhāThis
عَطَآؤُنَاʿaṭāunā(is) Our gift
فَٱمْنُنْfa-um'nunso grant
أَوْawor
أَمْسِكْamsikwithhold
بِغَيْرِbighayriwithout
حِسَابٍۢḥisābinaccount

Translation

This (is) Our gift so grant or withhold without account

Verse 40

وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed
لَهُۥlahufor him
عِندَنَاʿindanāwith Us
لَزُلْفَىٰlazul'fāsurely is a near access
وَحُسْنَwaḥus'naand a good
مَـَٔابٍۢmaābinplace of return

Translation

And indeed for him with Us surely is a near access and a good place of return

Verse 41

وَٱذْكُرْwa-udh'kurAnd remember
عَبْدَنَآʿabdanāOur slave
أَيُّوبَayyūbaAyyub
إِذْidhwhen
نَادَىٰnādāhe called
رَبَّهُۥٓrabbahuhis Lord
أَنِّىannīThat [I]
مَسَّنِىَmassaniya(has) touched me
ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُl-shayṭānuShaitaan
بِنُصْبٍۢbinuṣ'binwith distress
وَعَذَابٍwaʿadhābinand suffering

Translation

And remember Our slave Ayyub when he called his Lord That [I] (has) touched me Shaitaan with distress and suffering

Verse 42

ٱرْكُضْur'kuḍStrike
بِرِجْلِكَ ۖbirij'likawith your foot
هَـٰذَاhādhāThis
مُغْتَسَلٌۢmugh'tasalun(is a spring of) water to bathe
بَارِدٌۭbāriduncool
وَشَرَابٌۭwasharābunand a drink

Translation

Strike with your foot This (is a spring of) water to bathe cool and a drink

Verse 43

وَوَهَبْنَاwawahabnāAnd We granted
لَهُۥٓlahu[to] him
أَهْلَهُۥahlahuhis family
وَمِثْلَهُمwamith'lahumand a like of them
مَّعَهُمْmaʿahumwith them
رَحْمَةًۭraḥmatana Mercy
مِّنَّاminnāfrom Us
وَذِكْرَىٰwadhik'rāand a Reminder
لِأُو۟لِىli-ulīfor those of understanding
ٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِl-albābifor those of understanding

Translation

And We granted [to] him his family and a like of them with them a Mercy from Us and a Reminder for those of understanding for those of understanding

Verse 44

وَخُذْwakhudhAnd take
بِيَدِكَbiyadikain your hand
ضِغْثًۭاḍigh'thana bunch
فَٱضْرِبfa-iḍ'riband strike
بِّهِۦbihiwith it
وَلَاwalāand (do) not
تَحْنَثْ ۗtaḥnathbreak (your) oath
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, We
وَجَدْنَـٰهُwajadnāhu[We] found him
صَابِرًۭا ۚṣābiranpatient
نِّعْمَniʿ'maan excellent
ٱلْعَبْدُ ۖl-ʿabduslave
إِنَّهُۥٓinnahuIndeed, he
أَوَّابٌۭawwābunrepeatedly turned

Translation

And take in your hand a bunch and strike with it and (do) not break (your) oath Indeed, We [We] found him patient an excellent slave Indeed, he repeatedly turned

Verse 45

وَٱذْكُرْwa-udh'kurAnd remember
عِبَـٰدَنَآʿibādanāOur slaves
إِبْرَٰهِيمَib'rāhīmaIbrahim
وَإِسْحَـٰقَwa-is'ḥāqaand Isaac
وَيَعْقُوبَwayaʿqūbaand Ayyub
أُو۟لِىulīpossessors
ٱلْأَيْدِىl-aydī(of) strength
وَٱلْأَبْصَـٰرِwal-abṣāriand vision

Translation

And remember Our slaves Ibrahim and Isaac and Ayyub possessors (of) strength and vision

Verse 46

إِنَّآinnāIndeed, We
أَخْلَصْنَـٰهُمakhlaṣnāhum[We] chose them
بِخَالِصَةٍۢbikhāliṣatinfor an exclusive (quality)
ذِكْرَىdhik'rāremembrance
ٱلدَّارِl-dāri(of) the Home

Translation

Indeed, We [We] chose them for an exclusive (quality) remembrance (of) the Home

Verse 47

وَإِنَّهُمْwa-innahumAnd indeed, they
عِندَنَاʿindanāto Us
لَمِنَlamina(are) from
ٱلْمُصْطَفَيْنَl-muṣ'ṭafaynathe chosen ones
ٱلْأَخْيَارِl-akhyārithe best

Translation

And indeed, they to Us (are) from the chosen ones the best

Verse 48

وَٱذْكُرْwa-udh'kurAnd remember
إِسْمَـٰعِيلَis'māʿīlaIshmael
وَٱلْيَسَعَwal-yasaʿaand Elisha
وَذَاwadhāand Dhul-kifl
ٱلْكِفْلِ ۖl-kif'liand Dhul-kifl
وَكُلٌّۭwakullunand all
مِّنَmina(are) from
ٱلْأَخْيَارِl-akhyārithe best

Translation

And remember Ishmael and Elisha and Dhul-kifl and Dhul-kifl and all (are) from the best

Verse 49

هَـٰذَاhādhāThis
ذِكْرٌۭ ۚdhik'run(is) a Reminder
وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed
لِلْمُتَّقِينَlil'muttaqīnafor the righteous
لَحُسْنَlaḥus'nasurely, is a good
مَـَٔابٍۢmaābinplace of return

Translation

This (is) a Reminder And indeed for the righteous surely, is a good place of return

Verse 50

جَنَّـٰتِjannātiGardens
عَدْنٍۢʿadnin(of) Eternity
مُّفَتَّحَةًۭmufattaḥatan(will be) opened
لَّهُمُlahumufor them
ٱلْأَبْوَٰبُl-abwābuthe gates

Translation

Gardens (of) Eternity (will be) opened for them the gates

Verse 51

مُتَّكِـِٔينَmuttakiīnaReclining
فِيهَاfīhātherein
يَدْعُونَyadʿūnathey will call
فِيهَاfīhātherein
بِفَـٰكِهَةٍۢbifākihatinfor fruit
كَثِيرَةٍۢkathīratinmany
وَشَرَابٍۢwasharābinand drink

Translation

Reclining therein they will call therein for fruit many and drink

Verse 52

۞ وَعِندَهُمْwaʿindahumAnd with them
قَـٰصِرَٰتُqāṣirātu(will be) companions of modest gaze
ٱلطَّرْفِl-ṭarfi(will be) companions of modest gaze
أَتْرَابٌatrābunwell-matched

Translation

And with them (will be) companions of modest gaze (will be) companions of modest gaze well-matched

Verse 53

هَـٰذَاhādhāThis
مَا(is) what
تُوعَدُونَtūʿadūnayou are promised
لِيَوْمِliyawmifor (the) Day
ٱلْحِسَابِl-ḥisābi(of) Account

Translation

This (is) what you are promised for (the) Day (of) Account

Verse 54

إِنَّinnaIndeed
هَـٰذَاhādhāthis
لَرِزْقُنَاlariz'qunā(is) surely Our provision
مَاnot
لَهُۥlahufor it
مِنminany
نَّفَادٍnafādindepletion

Translation

Indeed this (is) surely Our provision not for it any depletion

Verse 55

هَـٰذَا ۚhādhāThis (is so)
وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed
لِلطَّـٰغِينَlilṭṭāghīnafor the transgressors
لَشَرَّlasharrasurely (is) an evil
مَـَٔابٍۢmaābinplace of return

Translation

This (is so) And indeed for the transgressors surely (is) an evil place of return

Verse 56

جَهَنَّمَjahannamaHell
يَصْلَوْنَهَاyaṣlawnahāthey will burn therein
فَبِئْسَfabi'saand wretched (is)
ٱلْمِهَادُl-mihāduthe resting place

Translation

Hell they will burn therein and wretched (is) the resting place

Verse 57

هَـٰذَاhādhāThis (is so)
فَلْيَذُوقُوهُfalyadhūqūhuThen let them taste it
حَمِيمٌۭḥamīmunboiling fluid
وَغَسَّاقٌۭwaghassāqunand purulence

Translation

This (is so) Then let them taste it boiling fluid and purulence

Verse 58

وَءَاخَرُwaākharuAnd other
مِنminof
شَكْلِهِۦٓshaklihiits type
أَزْوَٰجٌazwājun(of various) kinds

Translation

And other of its type (of various) kinds

Verse 59

هَـٰذَاhādhāThis
فَوْجٌۭfawjun(is) a company
مُّقْتَحِمٌۭmuq'taḥimunbursting
مَّعَكُمْ ۖmaʿakum(in) with you
لَاNo
مَرْحَبًۢاmarḥabanwelcome
بِهِمْ ۚbihimfor them
إِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed, they
صَالُوا۟ṣālū(will) burn
ٱلنَّارِl-nāri(in) the Fire

Translation

This (is) a company bursting (in) with you No welcome for them Indeed, they (will) burn (in) the Fire

Verse 60

قَالُوا۟qālūThey say
بَلْbalNay
أَنتُمْantumYou
لَاno
مَرْحَبًۢاmarḥabanwelcome
بِكُمْ ۖbikumfor you
أَنتُمْantumYou
قَدَّمْتُمُوهُqaddamtumūhubrought this
لَنَا ۖlanāupon us
فَبِئْسَfabi'saSo wretched (is)
ٱلْقَرَارُl-qarāruthe settlement

Translation

They say Nay You no welcome for you You brought this upon us So wretched (is) the settlement

Verse 61

قَالُوا۟qālūThey will say
رَبَّنَاrabbanāOur Lord
مَنmanwhoever
قَدَّمَqaddamabrought
لَنَاlanāupon us
هَـٰذَاhādhāthis
فَزِدْهُfazid'huincrease for him
عَذَابًۭاʿadhābana punishment
ضِعْفًۭاḍiʿ'fandouble
فِىin
ٱلنَّارِl-nārithe Fire

Translation

They will say Our Lord whoever brought upon us this increase for him a punishment double in the Fire

Verse 62

وَقَالُوا۟waqālūAnd they (will) say
مَاWhat (is)
لَنَاlanāfor us
لَاnot
نَرَىٰnarāwe see
رِجَالًۭاrijālanmen
كُنَّاkunnāwe used to
نَعُدُّهُمnaʿudduhumcount them
مِّنَminaamong
ٱلْأَشْرَارِl-ashrārithe bad ones

Translation

And they (will) say What (is) for us not we see men we used to count them among the bad ones

Verse 63

أَتَّخَذْنَـٰهُمْattakhadhnāhumDid we take them
سِخْرِيًّاsikh'riyyan(in) ridicule
أَمْamor
زَاغَتْzāghathas turned away
عَنْهُمُʿanhumufrom them
ٱلْأَبْصَـٰرُl-abṣāruthe vision

Translation

Did we take them (in) ridicule or has turned away from them the vision

Verse 64

إِنَّinnaIndeed
ذَٰلِكَdhālikathat
لَحَقٌّۭlaḥaqqun(is) surely (the) truth
تَخَاصُمُtakhāṣumu(the) quarreling
أَهْلِahli(of the) people
ٱلنَّارِl-nāri(of) the Fire

Translation

Indeed that (is) surely (the) truth (the) quarreling (of the) people (of) the Fire

Verse 65

قُلْqulSay
إِنَّمَآinnamāOnly
أَنَا۠anāI am
مُنذِرٌۭ ۖmundhiruna warner
وَمَاwamāand not
مِنْmin(is there) any
إِلَـٰهٍilāhingod
إِلَّاillāexcept
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
ٱلْوَٰحِدُl-wāḥiduthe One
ٱلْقَهَّارُl-qahāruthe Irresistible

Translation

Say Only I am a warner and not (is there) any god except Allah the One the Irresistible

Verse 66

رَبُّrabbuLord
ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwāti(of) the heavens
وَٱلْأَرْضِwal-arḍiand the earth
وَمَاwamāand whatever
بَيْنَهُمَاbaynahumā(is) between them
ٱلْعَزِيزُl-ʿazīzuthe All-Mighty
ٱلْغَفَّـٰرُl-ghafāruthe Oft-Forgiving

Translation

Lord (of) the heavens and the earth and whatever (is) between them the All-Mighty the Oft-Forgiving

Verse 67

قُلْqulSay
هُوَhuwaIt (is)
نَبَؤٌا۟naba-ona news
عَظِيمٌʿaẓīmungreat

Translation

Say It (is) a news great

Verse 68

أَنتُمْantumYou
عَنْهُʿanhufrom it
مُعْرِضُونَmuʿ'riḍūnaturn away

Translation

You from it turn away

Verse 69

مَاNot
كَانَkānais
لِىَliyafor me
مِنْminany
عِلْمٍۭʿil'minknowledge
بِٱلْمَلَإِbil-mala-i(of) the chiefs
ٱلْأَعْلَىٰٓl-aʿlāthe exalted
إِذْidhwhen
يَخْتَصِمُونَyakhtaṣimūnathey were disputing

Translation

Not is for me any knowledge (of) the chiefs the exalted when they were disputing

Verse 70

إِنinNot
يُوحَىٰٓyūḥāhas been revealed
إِلَىَّilayyato me
إِلَّآillāexcept
أَنَّمَآannamāthat only
أَنَا۠anāI am
نَذِيرٌۭnadhīruna warner
مُّبِينٌmubīnunclear

Translation

Not has been revealed to me except that only I am a warner clear

Verse 71

إِذْidhWhen
قَالَqālasaid
رَبُّكَrabbukayour Lord
لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِlil'malāikatito the Angels
إِنِّىinnīIndeed, I Am
خَـٰلِقٌۢkhāliqungoing to create
بَشَرًۭاbasharana human being
مِّنminfrom
طِينٍۢṭīninclay

Translation

When said your Lord to the Angels Indeed, I Am going to create a human being from clay

Verse 72

فَإِذَاfa-idhāSo when
سَوَّيْتُهُۥsawwaytuhuI have proportioned him
وَنَفَخْتُwanafakhtuand breathed
فِيهِfīhiinto him
مِنminof
رُّوحِىrūḥīMy spirit
فَقَعُوا۟faqaʿūthen fall down
لَهُۥlahuto him
سَـٰجِدِينَsājidīnaprostrating

Translation

So when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My spirit then fall down to him prostrating

Verse 73

فَسَجَدَfasajadaSo prostrated
ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُl-malāikatuthe Angels
كُلُّهُمْkulluhumall of them
أَجْمَعُونَajmaʿūnatogether

Translation

So prostrated the Angels all of them together

Verse 74

إِلَّآillāExcept
إِبْلِيسَib'līsaIblis
ٱسْتَكْبَرَis'takbarahe was arrogant
وَكَانَwakānaand became
مِنَminaof
ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَl-kāfirīnathe disbelievers

Translation

Except Iblis he was arrogant and became of the disbelievers

Verse 75

قَالَqālaHe said
يَـٰٓإِبْلِيسُyāib'līsuO Iblis
مَاWhat
مَنَعَكَmanaʿakaprevented you
أَنanthat
تَسْجُدَtasjudayou (should) prostrate
لِمَاlimāto (one) whom
خَلَقْتُkhalaqtuI created
بِيَدَىَّ ۖbiyadayyawith My Hands
أَسْتَكْبَرْتَastakbartaAre you arrogant
أَمْamor
كُنتَkuntaare you
مِنَminaof
ٱلْعَالِينَl-ʿālīnathe exalted ones

Translation

He said O Iblis What prevented you that you (should) prostrate to (one) whom I created with My Hands Are you arrogant or are you of the exalted ones

Verse 76

قَالَqālaHe said
أَنَا۠anāI am
خَيْرٌۭkhayrunbetter
مِّنْهُ ۖmin'huthan him
خَلَقْتَنِىkhalaqtanīYou created me
مِنminfrom
نَّارٍۢnārinfire
وَخَلَقْتَهُۥwakhalaqtahuand You created him
مِنminfrom
طِينٍۢṭīninclay

Translation

He said I am better than him You created me from fire and You created him from clay

Verse 77

قَالَqālaHe said
فَٱخْرُجْfa-ukh'rujThen get out
مِنْهَاmin'hāof it
فَإِنَّكَfa-innakafor indeed, you
رَجِيمٌۭrajīmun(are) accursed

Translation

He said Then get out of it for indeed, you (are) accursed

Verse 78

وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed
عَلَيْكَʿalaykaupon you
لَعْنَتِىٓlaʿnatī(is) My curse
إِلَىٰilāuntil
يَوْمِyawmi(the) Day
ٱلدِّينِl-dīni(of) Judgment

Translation

And indeed upon you (is) My curse until (the) Day (of) Judgment

Verse 79

قَالَqālaHe said
رَبِّrabbiMy Lord
فَأَنظِرْنِىٓfa-anẓir'nīThen give me respite
إِلَىٰilāuntil
يَوْمِyawmi(the) Day
يُبْعَثُونَyub'ʿathūnathey are resurrected

Translation

He said My Lord Then give me respite until (the) Day they are resurrected

Verse 80

قَالَqālaHe said
فَإِنَّكَfa-innakaThen indeed, you
مِنَmina(are) of
ٱلْمُنظَرِينَl-munẓarīnathose given respite

Translation

He said Then indeed, you (are) of those given respite

Verse 81

إِلَىٰilāUntil
يَوْمِyawmi(the) Day
ٱلْوَقْتِl-waqti(of) the time
ٱلْمَعْلُومِl-maʿlūmiwell-known

Translation

Until (the) Day (of) the time well-known

Verse 82

قَالَqālaHe said
فَبِعِزَّتِكَfabiʿizzatikaThen by Your might
لَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْla-ugh'wiyannahumI will surely mislead them
أَجْمَعِينَajmaʿīnaall

Translation

He said Then by Your might I will surely mislead them all

Verse 83

إِلَّاillāExcept
عِبَادَكَʿibādakaYour slaves
مِنْهُمُmin'humuamong them
ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَl-mukh'laṣīnathe chosen ones

Translation

Except Your slaves among them the chosen ones

Verse 84

قَالَqālaHe said
فَٱلْحَقُّfal-ḥaquThen (it is) the truth
وَٱلْحَقَّwal-ḥaqaand the truth
أَقُولُaqūluI say

Translation

He said Then (it is) the truth and the truth I say

Verse 85

لَأَمْلَأَنَّla-amla-annaSurely I will fill
جَهَنَّمَjahannamaHell
مِنكَminkawith you
وَمِمَّنwamimmanand those who
تَبِعَكَtabiʿakafollow you
مِنْهُمْmin'humamong them
أَجْمَعِينَajmaʿīnaall

Translation

Surely I will fill Hell with you and those who follow you among them all

Verse 86

قُلْqulSay
مَآNot
أَسْـَٔلُكُمْasalukumI ask of you
عَلَيْهِʿalayhifor it
مِنْminany
أَجْرٍۢajrinpayment
وَمَآwamāand not
أَنَا۠anāI am
مِنَminaof
ٱلْمُتَكَلِّفِينَl-mutakalifīnathe ones who pretend

Translation

Say Not I ask of you for it any payment and not I am of the ones who pretend

Verse 87

إِنْinNot
هُوَhuwait (is)
إِلَّاillāexcept
ذِكْرٌۭdhik'runa Reminder
لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَlil'ʿālamīnato the worlds

Translation

Not it (is) except a Reminder to the worlds

Verse 88

وَلَتَعْلَمُنَّwalataʿlamunnaAnd surely you will know
نَبَأَهُۥnaba-ahuits information
بَعْدَbaʿdaafter
حِينٍۭḥīnina time

Translation

And surely you will know its information after a time
