Chapter 49Medinan18 Verses

Verse 1

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO you who believe
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaO you who believe
ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūO you who believe
لَاlā(Do) not
تُقَدِّمُوا۟tuqaddimūput (yourselves) forward
بَيْنَbaynabefore Allah
يَدَىِyadayibefore Allah
ٱللَّهِl-lahibefore Allah
وَرَسُولِهِۦ ۖwarasūlihiand His Messenger
وَٱتَّقُوا۟wa-ittaqūand fear Allah
ٱللَّهَ ۚl-lahaand fear Allah
إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
سَمِيعٌsamīʿun(is) All-Hearer
عَلِيمٌۭʿalīmunAll-Knower

Translation

O you who believe O you who believe O you who believe (Do) not put (yourselves) forward before Allah before Allah before Allah and His Messenger and fear Allah and fear Allah Indeed Allah (is) All-Hearer All-Knower

Verse 2

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO you who believe
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaO you who believe
ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūO you who believe
لَاlā(Do) not
تَرْفَعُوٓا۟tarfaʿūraise
أَصْوَٰتَكُمْaṣwātakumyour voices
فَوْقَfawqaabove
صَوْتِṣawti(the) voice
ٱلنَّبِىِّl-nabiyi(of) the Prophet
وَلَاwalāand (do) not
تَجْهَرُوا۟tajharūbe loud
لَهُۥlahuto him
بِٱلْقَوْلِbil-qawliin speech
كَجَهْرِkajahrilike (the) loudness
بَعْضِكُمْbaʿḍikum(of) some of you
لِبَعْضٍlibaʿḍinto others
أَنanlest
تَحْبَطَtaḥbaṭabecome worthless
أَعْمَـٰلُكُمْaʿmālukumyour deeds
وَأَنتُمْwa-antumwhile you
لَاlā(do) not
تَشْعُرُونَtashʿurūnaperceive

Translation

O you who believe O you who believe O you who believe (Do) not raise your voices above (the) voice (of) the Prophet and (do) not be loud to him in speech like (the) loudness (of) some of you to others lest become worthless your deeds while you (do) not perceive

Verse 3

إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
يَغُضُّونَyaghuḍḍūnalower
أَصْوَٰتَهُمْaṣwātahumtheir voices
عِندَʿinda(in) presence
رَسُولِrasūli(of the) Messenger of Allah
ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of the) Messenger of Allah
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikathose
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(are) the ones
ٱمْتَحَنَim'taḥanaAllah has tested
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah has tested
قُلُوبَهُمْqulūbahumtheir hearts
لِلتَّقْوَىٰ ۚlilttaqwāfor righteousness
لَهُمlahumFor them
مَّغْفِرَةٌۭmaghfiratun(is) forgiveness
وَأَجْرٌwa-ajrunand a reward
عَظِيمٌʿaẓīmungreat

Translation

Indeed those who lower their voices (in) presence (of the) Messenger of Allah (of the) Messenger of Allah those (are) the ones Allah has tested Allah has tested their hearts for righteousness For them (is) forgiveness and a reward great

Verse 4

إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
يُنَادُونَكَyunādūnakacall you
مِنminfrom
وَرَآءِwarāibehind
ٱلْحُجُرَٰتِl-ḥujurātithe private chambers
أَكْثَرُهُمْaktharuhummost of them
لَاlā(do) not
يَعْقِلُونَyaʿqilūnaunderstand

Translation

Indeed those who call you from behind the private chambers most of them (do) not understand

Verse 5

وَلَوْwalawAnd if
أَنَّهُمْannahumthey
صَبَرُوا۟ṣabarūhad been patient
حَتَّىٰḥattāuntil
تَخْرُجَtakhrujayou came out
إِلَيْهِمْilayhimto them
لَكَانَlakānacertainly it would be
خَيْرًۭاkhayranbetter
لَّهُمْ ۚlahumfor them
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
غَفُورٌۭghafūrun(is) Oft-Forgiving
رَّحِيمٌۭraḥīmunMost Merciful

Translation

And if they had been patient until you came out to them certainly it would be better for them And Allah (is) Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful

Verse 6

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO you who believe
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaO you who believe
ءَامَنُوٓا۟āmanūO you who believe
إِنinIf
جَآءَكُمْjāakumcomes to you
فَاسِقٌۢfāsiquna wicked person
بِنَبَإٍۢbinaba-inwith information
فَتَبَيَّنُوٓا۟fatabayyanūinvestigate
أَنanlest
تُصِيبُوا۟tuṣībūyou harm
قَوْمًۢاqawmana people
بِجَهَـٰلَةٍۢbijahālatinin ignorance
فَتُصْبِحُوا۟fatuṣ'biḥūthen you become
عَلَىٰʿalāover
مَاmāwhat
فَعَلْتُمْfaʿaltumyou have done
نَـٰدِمِينَnādimīnaregretful

Translation

O you who believe O you who believe O you who believe If comes to you a wicked person with information investigate lest you harm a people in ignorance then you become over what you have done regretful

Verse 7

وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟wa-iʿ'lamūAnd know
أَنَّannathat
فِيكُمْfīkumamong you
رَسُولَrasūla(is the) Messenger of Allah
ٱللَّهِ ۚl-lahi(is the) Messenger of Allah
لَوْlawIf
يُطِيعُكُمْyuṭīʿukumhe were to obey you
فِىfīin
كَثِيرٍۢkathīrinmuch
مِّنَminaof
ٱلْأَمْرِl-amrithe matter
لَعَنِتُّمْlaʿanittumsurely you would be in difficulty
وَلَـٰكِنَّwalākinnabut
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
حَبَّبَḥabbabahas endeared
إِلَيْكُمُilaykumuto you
ٱلْإِيمَـٰنَl-īmānathe Faith
وَزَيَّنَهُۥwazayyanahuand has made it pleasing
فِىfīin
قُلُوبِكُمْqulūbikumyour hearts
وَكَرَّهَwakarrahaand has made hateful
إِلَيْكُمُilaykumuto you
ٱلْكُفْرَl-kuf'radisbelief
وَٱلْفُسُوقَwal-fusūqaand defiance
وَٱلْعِصْيَانَ ۚwal-ʿiṣ'yānaand disobedience
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThose
هُمُhumu(are) they
ٱلرَّٰشِدُونَl-rāshidūnathe guided ones

Translation

And know that among you (is the) Messenger of Allah (is the) Messenger of Allah If he were to obey you in much of the matter surely you would be in difficulty but Allah has endeared to you the Faith and has made it pleasing in your hearts and has made hateful to you disbelief and defiance and disobedience Those (are) they the guided ones

Verse 8

فَضْلًۭاfaḍlanA Bounty
مِّنَminafrom Allah
ٱللَّهِl-lahifrom Allah
وَنِعْمَةًۭ ۚwaniʿ'matanand favor
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
عَلِيمٌʿalīmun(is) All-Knower
حَكِيمٌۭḥakīmunAll-Wise

Translation

A Bounty from Allah from Allah and favor And Allah (is) All-Knower All-Wise

Verse 9

وَإِنwa-inAnd if
طَآئِفَتَانِṭāifatānitwo parties
مِنَminaamong
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīnathe believers
ٱقْتَتَلُوا۟iq'tatalūfight
فَأَصْلِحُوا۟fa-aṣliḥūthen make peace
بَيْنَهُمَا ۖbaynahumābetween both of them
فَإِنۢfa-inBut if
بَغَتْbaghatoppresses
إِحْدَىٰهُمَاiḥ'dāhumāone of them
عَلَىʿalāon
ٱلْأُخْرَىٰl-ukh'rāthe other
فَقَـٰتِلُوا۟faqātilūthen fight
ٱلَّتِىallatīone which
تَبْغِىtabghīoppresses
حَتَّىٰḥattāuntil
تَفِىٓءَtafīait returns
إِلَىٰٓilāto
أَمْرِamri(the) command
ٱللَّهِ ۚl-lahi(of) Allah
فَإِنfa-inThen if
فَآءَتْfāatit returns
فَأَصْلِحُوا۟fa-aṣliḥūthen make peace
بَيْنَهُمَاbaynahumābetween them
بِٱلْعَدْلِbil-ʿadliwith justice
وَأَقْسِطُوٓا۟ ۖwa-aqsiṭūand act justly
إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
يُحِبُّyuḥibbuloves
ٱلْمُقْسِطِينَl-muq'siṭīnathose who act justly

Translation

And if two parties among the believers fight then make peace between both of them But if oppresses one of them on the other then fight one which oppresses until it returns to (the) command (of) Allah Then if it returns then make peace between them with justice and act justly Indeed Allah loves those who act justly

Verse 10

إِنَّمَاinnamāOnly
ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَl-mu'minūnathe believers
إِخْوَةٌۭikh'watun(are) brothers
فَأَصْلِحُوا۟fa-aṣliḥūso make peace
بَيْنَbaynabetween
أَخَوَيْكُمْ ۚakhawaykumyour brothers
وَٱتَّقُوا۟wa-ittaqūand fear Allah
ٱللَّهَl-lahaand fear Allah
لَعَلَّكُمْlaʿallakumso that you may
تُرْحَمُونَtur'ḥamūnareceive mercy

Translation

Only the believers (are) brothers so make peace between your brothers and fear Allah and fear Allah so that you may receive mercy

Verse 11

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO you who believe
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaO you who believe
ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūO you who believe
لَاlā(Let) not
يَسْخَرْyaskharridicule
قَوْمٌۭqawmuna people
مِّنmin[of]
قَوْمٍqawmin(another) people
عَسَىٰٓʿasāperhaps
أَنanthat
يَكُونُوا۟yakūnūthey may be
خَيْرًۭاkhayranbetter
مِّنْهُمْmin'humthan them
وَلَاwalāand (let) not
نِسَآءٌۭnisāonwomen
مِّنmin[of]
نِّسَآءٍnisāin(other) women
عَسَىٰٓʿasāperhaps
أَنanthat
يَكُنَّyakunnathey may be
خَيْرًۭاkhayranbetter
مِّنْهُنَّ ۖmin'hunnathan them
وَلَاwalāAnd (do) not
تَلْمِزُوٓا۟talmizūinsult
أَنفُسَكُمْanfusakumyourselves
وَلَاwalāand (do) not
تَنَابَزُوا۟tanābazūcall each other
بِٱلْأَلْقَـٰبِ ۖbil-alqābiby nicknames
بِئْسَbi'saWretched is
ٱلِٱسْمُl-s'muthe name
ٱلْفُسُوقُl-fusūqu(of) disobedience
بَعْدَbaʿdaafter
ٱلْإِيمَـٰنِ ۚl-īmānithe faith
وَمَنwamanAnd whoever
لَّمْlam(does) not
يَتُبْyatubrepent
فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَfa-ulāikathen those
هُمُhumuthey
ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَl-ẓālimūna(are) the wrongdoers

Translation

O you who believe O you who believe O you who believe (Let) not ridicule a people [of] (another) people perhaps that they may be better than them and (let) not women [of] (other) women perhaps that they may be better than them And (do) not insult yourselves and (do) not call each other by nicknames Wretched is the name (of) disobedience after the faith And whoever (does) not repent then those they (are) the wrongdoers

Verse 12

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO you who believe
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaO you who believe
ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūO you who believe
ٱجْتَنِبُوا۟ij'tanibūAvoid
كَثِيرًۭاkathīranmuch
مِّنَminaof
ٱلظَّنِّl-ẓanithe assumption
إِنَّinnaIndeed
بَعْضَbaʿḍasome
ٱلظَّنِّl-ẓaniassumption
إِثْمٌۭ ۖith'mun(is) sin
وَلَاwalāAnd (do) not
تَجَسَّسُوا۟tajassasūspy
وَلَاwalāand (do) not
يَغْتَبyaghtabbackbite
بَّعْضُكُمbaʿḍukumsome of you
بَعْضًا ۚbaʿḍan(to) others
أَيُحِبُّayuḥibbuWould like
أَحَدُكُمْaḥadukumone of you
أَنanto
يَأْكُلَyakulaeat
لَحْمَlaḥma(the) flesh
أَخِيهِakhīhi(of) his brother
مَيْتًۭاmaytandead
فَكَرِهْتُمُوهُ ۚfakarih'tumūhuNay, you would hate it
وَٱتَّقُوا۟wa-ittaqūAnd fear Allah
ٱللَّهَ ۚl-lahaAnd fear Allah
إِنَّinnaindeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
تَوَّابٌۭtawwābun(is) Oft-Returning
رَّحِيمٌۭraḥīmunMost Merciful

Translation

O you who believe O you who believe O you who believe Avoid much of the assumption Indeed some assumption (is) sin And (do) not spy and (do) not backbite some of you (to) others Would like one of you to eat (the) flesh (of) his brother dead Nay, you would hate it And fear Allah And fear Allah indeed Allah (is) Oft-Returning Most Merciful

Verse 13

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO mankind
ٱلنَّاسُl-nāsuO mankind
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, We
خَلَقْنَـٰكُمkhalaqnākumcreated you
مِّنminfrom
ذَكَرٍۢdhakarina male
وَأُنثَىٰwa-unthāand a female
وَجَعَلْنَـٰكُمْwajaʿalnākumand We made you
شُعُوبًۭاshuʿūbannations
وَقَبَآئِلَwaqabāilaand tribes
لِتَعَارَفُوٓا۟ ۚlitaʿārafūthat you may know one another
إِنَّinnaIndeed
أَكْرَمَكُمْakramakum(the) most noble of you
عِندَʿindanear
ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
أَتْقَىٰكُمْ ۚatqākum(is the) most righteous of you
إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
عَلِيمٌʿalīmun(is) All-Knower
خَبِيرٌۭkhabīrunAll-Aware

Translation

O mankind O mankind Indeed, We created you from a male and a female and We made you nations and tribes that you may know one another Indeed (the) most noble of you near Allah (is the) most righteous of you Indeed Allah (is) All-Knower All-Aware

Verse 14

۞ قَالَتِqālatiSay
ٱلْأَعْرَابُl-aʿrābuthe Bedouins
ءَامَنَّا ۖāmannāWe believe
قُلqulSay
لَّمْlamNot
تُؤْمِنُوا۟tu'minūyou believe
وَلَـٰكِنwalākinbut
قُولُوٓا۟qūlūsay
أَسْلَمْنَاaslamnāWe have submitted
وَلَمَّاwalammāand has not yet
يَدْخُلِyadkhulientered
ٱلْإِيمَـٰنُl-īmānuthe faith
فِىfīin
قُلُوبِكُمْ ۖqulūbikumyour hearts
وَإِنwa-inBut if
تُطِيعُوا۟tuṭīʿūyou obey
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
وَرَسُولَهُۥwarasūlahuand His Messenger
لَاlānot
يَلِتْكُمyalit'kumHe will deprive you
مِّنْminof
أَعْمَـٰلِكُمْaʿmālikumyour deeds
شَيْـًٔا ۚshayananything
إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
غَفُورٌۭghafūrun(is) Oft-Forgiving
رَّحِيمٌraḥīmunMost Merciful

Translation

Say the Bedouins We believe Say Not you believe but say We have submitted and has not yet entered the faith in your hearts But if you obey Allah and His Messenger not He will deprive you of your deeds anything Indeed Allah (is) Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful

Verse 15

إِنَّمَاinnamāOnly
ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَl-mu'minūnathe believers
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(are) those who
ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieve
بِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Allah
وَرَسُولِهِۦwarasūlihiand His Messenger
ثُمَّthummathen
لَمْlam(do) not
يَرْتَابُوا۟yartābūdoubt
وَجَـٰهَدُوا۟wajāhadūbut strive
بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْbi-amwālihimwith their wealth
وَأَنفُسِهِمْwa-anfusihimand their lives
فِىfīin
سَبِيلِsabīli(the) way
ٱللَّهِ ۚl-lahi(of) Allah
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThose
هُمُhumu[they]
ٱلصَّـٰدِقُونَl-ṣādiqūna(are) the truthful

Translation

Only the believers (are) those who believe in Allah and His Messenger then (do) not doubt but strive with their wealth and their lives in (the) way (of) Allah Those [they] (are) the truthful

Verse 16

قُلْqulSay
أَتُعَلِّمُونَatuʿallimūnaWill you acquaint
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
بِدِينِكُمْbidīnikumwith your religion
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuwhile Allah
يَعْلَمُyaʿlamuknows
مَاmāwhat
فِىfī(is) in
ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwātithe heavens
وَمَاwamāand what
فِىfī(is) in
ٱلْأَرْضِ ۚl-arḍithe earth
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
بِكُلِّbikulliof every
شَىْءٍshayinthing
عَلِيمٌۭʿalīmun(is) All-Knower

Translation

Say Will you acquaint Allah with your religion while Allah knows what (is) in the heavens and what (is) in the earth And Allah of every thing (is) All-Knower

Verse 17

يَمُنُّونَyamunnūnaThey consider (it) a favor
عَلَيْكَʿalaykato you
أَنْanthat
أَسْلَمُوا۟ ۖaslamūthey have accepted Islam
قُلqulSay
لَّاlā(Do) not
تَمُنُّوا۟tamunnūconsider a favor
عَلَىَّʿalayyaon me
إِسْلَـٰمَكُم ۖis'lāmakumyour Islam
بَلِbaliNay
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
يَمُنُّyamunnuhas conferred a favor
عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykumupon you
أَنْanthat
هَدَىٰكُمْhadākumHe has guided you
لِلْإِيمَـٰنِlil'īmānito the faith
إِنinif
كُنتُمْkuntumyou are
صَـٰدِقِينَṣādiqīnatruthful

Translation

They consider (it) a favor to you that they have accepted Islam Say (Do) not consider a favor on me your Islam Nay Allah has conferred a favor upon you that He has guided you to the faith if you are truthful

Verse 18

إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
يَعْلَمُyaʿlamuknows
غَيْبَghayba(the) unseen
ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwāti(of) the heavens
وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚwal-arḍiand the earth
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
بَصِيرٌۢbaṣīrun(is) All-Seer
بِمَاbimāof what
تَعْمَلُونَtaʿmalūnayou do

Translation

Indeed Allah knows (the) unseen (of) the heavens and the earth And Allah (is) All-Seer of what you do
