The Moon

Chapter 54Meccan55 Verses

Verse 1

ٱقْتَرَبَتِiq'tarabatiHas come near
ٱلسَّاعَةُl-sāʿatuthe Hour
وَٱنشَقَّwa-inshaqqaand has split
ٱلْقَمَرُl-qamaruthe moon

Translation

Has come near the Hour and has split the moon

Verse 2

وَإِنwa-inAnd if
يَرَوْا۟yarawthey see
ءَايَةًۭāyatana Sign
يُعْرِضُوا۟yuʿ'riḍūthey turn away
وَيَقُولُوا۟wayaqūlūand say
سِحْرٌۭsiḥ'runMagic
مُّسْتَمِرٌّۭmus'tamirruncontinuing

Translation

And if they see a Sign they turn away and say Magic continuing

Verse 3

وَكَذَّبُوا۟wakadhabūAnd they denied
وَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟wa-ittabaʿūand followed
أَهْوَآءَهُمْ ۚahwāahumtheir desires
وَكُلُّwakullubut (for) every
أَمْرٍۢamrinmatter
مُّسْتَقِرٌّۭmus'taqirrun(will be a) settlement

Translation

And they denied and followed their desires but (for) every matter (will be a) settlement

Verse 4

وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainly
جَآءَهُمjāahumhas come to them
مِّنَminaof
ٱلْأَنۢبَآءِl-anbāithe information
مَاmāwherein
فِيهِfīhiwherein
مُزْدَجَرٌmuz'dajarun(is) deterrence

Translation

And certainly has come to them of the information wherein wherein (is) deterrence

Verse 5

حِكْمَةٌۢḥik'matunWisdom
بَـٰلِغَةٌۭ ۖbālighatunperfect
فَمَاfamābut not
تُغْنِtugh'niwill avail
ٱلنُّذُرُl-nudhuruthe warnings

Translation

Wisdom perfect but not will avail the warnings

Verse 6

فَتَوَلَّfatawallaSo turn away
عَنْهُمْ ۘʿanhumfrom them
يَوْمَyawma(The) Day
يَدْعُyadʿuwill call
ٱلدَّاعِl-dāʿithe caller
إِلَىٰilāto
شَىْءٍۢshayina thing
نُّكُرٍnukurinterrible

Translation

So turn away from them (The) Day will call the caller to a thing terrible

Verse 7

خُشَّعًاkhushaʿan(Will be) humbled
أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْabṣāruhumtheir eyes
يَخْرُجُونَyakhrujūnathey will come forth
مِنَminafrom
ٱلْأَجْدَاثِl-ajdāthithe graves
كَأَنَّهُمْka-annahumas if they (were)
جَرَادٌۭjarādunlocusts
مُّنتَشِرٌۭmuntashirunspreading

Translation

(Will be) humbled their eyes they will come forth from the graves as if they (were) locusts spreading

Verse 8

مُّهْطِعِينَmuh'ṭiʿīnaRacing ahead
إِلَىilātowards
ٱلدَّاعِ ۖl-dāʿithe caller
يَقُولُyaqūluWill say
ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَl-kāfirūnathe disbelievers
هَـٰذَاhādhāThis
يَوْمٌyawmun(is) a Day
عَسِرٌۭʿasirundifficult

Translation

Racing ahead towards the caller Will say the disbelievers This (is) a Day difficult

Verse 9

۞ كَذَّبَتْkadhabatDenied
قَبْلَهُمْqablahumbefore them
قَوْمُqawmu(the) people
نُوحٍۢnūḥin(of) Nuh
فَكَذَّبُوا۟fakadhabūand they denied
عَبْدَنَاʿabdanāOur slave
وَقَالُوا۟waqālūand said
مَجْنُونٌۭmajnūnunA madman
وَٱزْدُجِرَwa-uz'dujiraand he was repelled

Translation

Denied before them (the) people (of) Nuh and they denied Our slave and said A madman and he was repelled

Verse 10

فَدَعَاfadaʿāSo he called
رَبَّهُۥٓrabbahuhis Lord
أَنِّىannīI am
مَغْلُوبٌۭmaghlūbunone overpowered
فَٱنتَصِرْfa-intaṣirso help

Translation

So he called his Lord I am one overpowered so help

Verse 11

فَفَتَحْنَآfafataḥnāSo We opened
أَبْوَٰبَabwāba(the) gates
ٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāi(of) heaven
بِمَآءٍۢbimāinwith water
مُّنْهَمِرٍۢmun'hamirinpouring down

Translation

So We opened (the) gates (of) heaven with water pouring down

Verse 12

وَفَجَّرْنَاwafajjarnāAnd We caused to burst
ٱلْأَرْضَl-arḍathe earth
عُيُونًۭاʿuyūnan(with) springs
فَٱلْتَقَىfal-taqāso met
ٱلْمَآءُl-māuthe water(s)
عَلَىٰٓʿalāfor
أَمْرٍۢamrina matter
قَدْqadalready
قُدِرَqudirapredestined

Translation

And We caused to burst the earth (with) springs so met the water(s) for a matter already predestined

Verse 13

وَحَمَلْنَـٰهُwaḥamalnāhuAnd We carried him
عَلَىٰʿalāon
ذَاتِdhāti(ark) made of planks
أَلْوَٰحٍۢalwāḥin(ark) made of planks
وَدُسُرٍۢwadusurinand nails

Translation

And We carried him on (ark) made of planks (ark) made of planks and nails

Verse 14

تَجْرِىtajrīSailing
بِأَعْيُنِنَاbi-aʿyuninābefore Our eyes
جَزَآءًۭjazāana reward
لِّمَنlimanfor (he) who
كَانَkānawas
كُفِرَkufiradenied

Translation

Sailing before Our eyes a reward for (he) who was denied

Verse 15

وَلَقَدwalaqadAnd certainly
تَّرَكْنَـٰهَآtaraknāhāWe left it
ءَايَةًۭāyatan(as) a Sign
فَهَلْfahalso is (there)
مِنminany
مُّدَّكِرٍۢmuddakirinwho will receive admonition

Translation

And certainly We left it (as) a Sign so is (there) any who will receive admonition

Verse 16

فَكَيْفَfakayfaSo how
كَانَkānawas
عَذَابِىʿadhābīMy punishment
وَنُذُرِwanudhuriand My warnings

Translation

So how was My punishment and My warnings

Verse 17

وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainly
يَسَّرْنَاyassarnāWe have made easy
ٱلْقُرْءَانَl-qur'ānathe Quran
لِلذِّكْرِlildhik'rifor remembrance
فَهَلْfahalso is (there)
مِنminany
مُّدَّكِرٍۢmuddakirinwho will receive admonition

Translation

And certainly We have made easy the Quran for remembrance so is (there) any who will receive admonition

Verse 18

كَذَّبَتْkadhabatDenied
عَادٌۭʿādunAad
فَكَيْفَfakayfaso how
كَانَkānawas
عَذَابِىʿadhābīMy punishment
وَنُذُرِwanudhuriand My warnings

Translation

Denied Aad so how was My punishment and My warnings

Verse 19

إِنَّآinnāIndeed, We
أَرْسَلْنَاarsalnā[We] sent
عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimupon them
رِيحًۭاrīḥana wind
صَرْصَرًۭاṣarṣaranfurious
فِىfīon
يَوْمِyawmia day
نَحْسٍۢnaḥsin(of) misfortune
مُّسْتَمِرٍّۢmus'tamirrincontinuous

Translation

Indeed, We [We] sent upon them a wind furious on a day (of) misfortune continuous

Verse 20

تَنزِعُtanziʿuPlucking out
ٱلنَّاسَl-nāsamen
كَأَنَّهُمْka-annahumas if they (were)
أَعْجَازُaʿjāzutrunks
نَخْلٍۢnakhlin(of) date-palms
مُّنقَعِرٍۢmunqaʿirinuprooted

Translation

Plucking out men as if they (were) trunks (of) date-palms uprooted

Verse 21

فَكَيْفَfakayfaSo how
كَانَkānawas
عَذَابِىʿadhābīMy punishment
وَنُذُرِwanudhuriand My warnings

Translation

So how was My punishment and My warnings

Verse 22

وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainly
يَسَّرْنَاyassarnāWe have made easy
ٱلْقُرْءَانَl-qur'ānathe Quran
لِلذِّكْرِlildhik'rifor remembrance
فَهَلْfahalso is (there)
مِنminany
مُّدَّكِرٍۢmuddakirinwho will receive admonition

Translation

And certainly We have made easy the Quran for remembrance so is (there) any who will receive admonition

Verse 23

كَذَّبَتْkadhabatDenied
ثَمُودُthamūduThamud
بِٱلنُّذُرِbil-nudhurithe warnings

Translation

Denied Thamud the warnings

Verse 24

فَقَالُوٓا۟faqālūAnd said
أَبَشَرًۭاabasharanIs (it) a human being
مِّنَّاminnāamong us
وَٰحِدًۭاwāḥidanone
نَّتَّبِعُهُۥٓnattabiʿuhu(that) we should follow him
إِنَّآinnāIndeed, we
إِذًۭاidhanthen
لَّفِىlafī(will be) surely in
ضَلَـٰلٍۢḍalālinerror
وَسُعُرٍwasuʿurinand madness

Translation

And said Is (it) a human being among us one (that) we should follow him Indeed, we then (will be) surely in error and madness

Verse 25

أَءُلْقِىَa-ul'qiyaHas been sent
ٱلذِّكْرُl-dhik'ruthe Reminder
عَلَيْهِʿalayhito him
مِنۢminfrom
بَيْنِنَاbaynināamong us
بَلْbalNay
هُوَhuwahe
كَذَّابٌkadhābun(is) a liar
أَشِرٌۭashiruninsolent

Translation

Has been sent the Reminder to him from among us Nay he (is) a liar insolent

Verse 26

سَيَعْلَمُونَsayaʿlamūnaThey will know
غَدًۭاghadantomorrow
مَّنِmaniwho
ٱلْكَذَّابُl-kadhābu(is) the liar
ٱلْأَشِرُl-ashiruthe insolent one

Translation

They will know tomorrow who (is) the liar the insolent one

Verse 27

إِنَّاinnāIndeed, We
مُرْسِلُوا۟mur'silū(are) sending
ٱلنَّاقَةِl-nāqatithe she-camel
فِتْنَةًۭfit'natan(as) a trial
لَّهُمْlahumfor them
فَٱرْتَقِبْهُمْfa-ir'taqib'humso watch them
وَٱصْطَبِرْwa-iṣ'ṭabirand be patient

Translation

Indeed, We (are) sending the she-camel (as) a trial for them so watch them and be patient

Verse 28

وَنَبِّئْهُمْwanabbi'humAnd inform them
أَنَّannathat
ٱلْمَآءَl-māathe water
قِسْمَةٌۢqis'matun(is) to be shared
بَيْنَهُمْ ۖbaynahumbetween them
كُلُّkullueach
شِرْبٍۢshir'bindrink
مُّحْتَضَرٌۭmuḥ'taḍarunattended

Translation

And inform them that the water (is) to be shared between them each drink attended

Verse 29

فَنَادَوْا۟fanādawBut they called
صَاحِبَهُمْṣāḥibahumtheir companion
فَتَعَاطَىٰfataʿāṭāand he took
فَعَقَرَfaʿaqaraand hamstrung

Translation

But they called their companion and he took and hamstrung

Verse 30

فَكَيْفَfakayfaSo how
كَانَkānawas
عَذَابِىʿadhābīMy punishment
وَنُذُرِwanudhuriand My warnings

Translation

So how was My punishment and My warnings

Verse 31

إِنَّآinnāIndeed, We
أَرْسَلْنَاarsalnā[We] sent
عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimupon them
صَيْحَةًۭṣayḥatanthunderous blast
وَٰحِدَةًۭwāḥidatansingle
فَكَانُوا۟fakānūand they became
كَهَشِيمِkahashīmilike dry twig fragments
ٱلْمُحْتَظِرِl-muḥ'taẓiri(used by) a fence builder

Translation

Indeed, We [We] sent upon them thunderous blast single and they became like dry twig fragments (used by) a fence builder

Verse 32

وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainly
يَسَّرْنَاyassarnāWe have made easy
ٱلْقُرْءَانَl-qur'ānathe Quran
لِلذِّكْرِlildhik'rifor remembrance
فَهَلْfahalso is (there)
مِنminany
مُّدَّكِرٍۢmuddakirinwho will receive admonition

Translation

And certainly We have made easy the Quran for remembrance so is (there) any who will receive admonition

Verse 33

كَذَّبَتْkadhabatDenied
قَوْمُqawmu(the) people
لُوطٍۭlūṭin(of) Lut
بِٱلنُّذُرِbil-nudhurithe warnings

Translation

Denied (the) people (of) Lut the warnings

Verse 34

إِنَّآinnāIndeed, We
أَرْسَلْنَاarsalnā[We] sent
عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimupon them
حَاصِبًاḥāṣibana storm of stones
إِلَّآillāexcept
ءَالَāla(the) family
لُوطٍۢ ۖlūṭin(of) Lut
نَّجَّيْنَـٰهُمnajjaynāhumWe saved them
بِسَحَرٍۢbisaḥarinby dawn

Translation

Indeed, We [We] sent upon them a storm of stones except (the) family (of) Lut We saved them by dawn

Verse 35

نِّعْمَةًۭniʿ'matan(As) a favor
مِّنْminfrom
عِندِنَا ۚʿindināUs
كَذَٰلِكَkadhālikaThus
نَجْزِىnajzīWe reward
مَنman(one) who
شَكَرَshakara(is) grateful

Translation

(As) a favor from Us Thus We reward (one) who (is) grateful

Verse 36

وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainly
أَنذَرَهُمandharahumhe warned them
بَطْشَتَنَاbaṭshatanā(of) Our seizure
فَتَمَارَوْا۟fatamārawbut they disputed
بِٱلنُّذُرِbil-nudhurithe warnings

Translation

And certainly he warned them (of) Our seizure but they disputed the warnings

Verse 37

وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainly
رَٰوَدُوهُrāwadūhuthey demanded from him
عَنʿanthey demanded from him
ضَيْفِهِۦḍayfihihis guests
فَطَمَسْنَآfaṭamasnāso We blinded
أَعْيُنَهُمْaʿyunahumtheir eyes
فَذُوقُوا۟fadhūqūSo taste
عَذَابِىʿadhābīMy punishment
وَنُذُرِwanudhuriand My warnings

Translation

And certainly they demanded from him they demanded from him his guests so We blinded their eyes So taste My punishment and My warnings

Verse 38

وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainly
صَبَّحَهُمṣabbaḥahumseized them in the morning
بُكْرَةًbuk'ratanearly
عَذَابٌۭʿadhābuna punishment
مُّسْتَقِرٌّۭmus'taqirrunabiding

Translation

And certainly seized them in the morning early a punishment abiding

Verse 39

فَذُوقُوا۟fadhūqūSo taste
عَذَابِىʿadhābīMy punishment
وَنُذُرِwanudhuriand My warnings

Translation

So taste My punishment and My warnings

Verse 40

وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainly
يَسَّرْنَاyassarnāWe have made easy
ٱلْقُرْءَانَl-qur'ānathe Quran
لِلذِّكْرِlildhik'rifor remembrance
فَهَلْfahalso is (there)
مِنminany
مُّدَّكِرٍۢmuddakirinwho will receive admonition

Translation

And certainly We have made easy the Quran for remembrance so is (there) any who will receive admonition

Verse 41

وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainly
جَآءَjāacame
ءَالَāla(to the) people
فِرْعَوْنَfir'ʿawna(of) Firaun
ٱلنُّذُرُl-nudhuruwarnings

Translation

And certainly came (to the) people (of) Firaun warnings

Verse 42

كَذَّبُوا۟kadhabūThey denied
بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَاbiāyātināOur Signs
كُلِّهَاkullihāall of them
فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُمْfa-akhadhnāhumso We seized them
أَخْذَakhdha(with) a seizure
عَزِيزٍۢʿazīzin(of) All-Mighty
مُّقْتَدِرٍmuq'tadirin(the) Powerful One

Translation

They denied Our Signs all of them so We seized them (with) a seizure (of) All-Mighty (the) Powerful One

Verse 43

أَكُفَّارُكُمْakuffārukumAre your disbelievers
خَيْرٌۭkhayrunbetter
مِّنْminthan
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكُمْulāikumthose
أَمْamor
لَكُمlakumfor you
بَرَآءَةٌۭbarāatun(is) an exemption
فِىfīin
ٱلزُّبُرِl-zuburithe Scriptures

Translation

Are your disbelievers better than those or for you (is) an exemption in the Scriptures

Verse 44

أَمْamOr
يَقُولُونَyaqūlūna(do) they say
نَحْنُnaḥnuWe
جَمِيعٌۭjamīʿun(are) an assembly
مُّنتَصِرٌۭmuntaṣirunhelping (each other)

Translation

Or (do) they say We (are) an assembly helping (each other)

Verse 45

سَيُهْزَمُsayuh'zamuSoon will be defeated
ٱلْجَمْعُl-jamʿu(their) assembly
وَيُوَلُّونَwayuwallūnaand they will turn
ٱلدُّبُرَl-dubura(their) backs

Translation

Soon will be defeated (their) assembly and they will turn (their) backs

Verse 46

بَلِbaliNay
ٱلسَّاعَةُl-sāʿatuthe Hour
مَوْعِدُهُمْmawʿiduhum(is) their promised time
وَٱلسَّاعَةُwal-sāʿatuand the Hour
أَدْهَىٰadhā(will be) more grievous
وَأَمَرُّwa-amarruand more bitter

Translation

Nay the Hour (is) their promised time and the Hour (will be) more grievous and more bitter

Verse 47

إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَl-muj'rimīnathe criminals
فِىfī(are) in
ضَلَـٰلٍۢḍalālinan error
وَسُعُرٍۢwasuʿurinand madness

Translation

Indeed the criminals (are) in an error and madness

Verse 48

يَوْمَyawma(The) Day
يُسْحَبُونَyus'ḥabūnathey will be dragged
فِىfīinto
ٱلنَّارِl-nārithe Fire
عَلَىٰʿalāon
وُجُوهِهِمْwujūhihimtheir faces
ذُوقُوا۟dhūqūTaste
مَسَّmassa(the) touch
سَقَرَsaqara(of) Hell

Translation

(The) Day they will be dragged into the Fire on their faces Taste (the) touch (of) Hell

Verse 49

إِنَّاinnāIndeed, [We]
كُلَّkullaevery
شَىْءٍshayinthing
خَلَقْنَـٰهُkhalaqnāhuWe created it
بِقَدَرٍۢbiqadarinby a measure

Translation

Indeed, [We] every thing We created it by a measure

Verse 50

وَمَآwamāAnd not
أَمْرُنَآamrunā(is) Our Command
إِلَّاillābut
وَٰحِدَةٌۭwāḥidatunone
كَلَمْحٍۭkalamḥinlike the twinkling
بِٱلْبَصَرِbil-baṣari(of) the eye

Translation

And not (is) Our Command but one like the twinkling (of) the eye

Verse 51

وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainly
أَهْلَكْنَآahlaknāWe destroyed
أَشْيَاعَكُمْashyāʿakumyour kinds
فَهَلْfahalso is (there)
مِنminany
مُّدَّكِرٍۢmuddakirinwho will receive admonition

Translation

And certainly We destroyed your kinds so is (there) any who will receive admonition

Verse 52

وَكُلُّwakulluAnd every
شَىْءٍۢshayinthing
فَعَلُوهُfaʿalūhuthey did
فِىfī(is) in
ٱلزُّبُرِl-zuburithe written records

Translation

And every thing they did (is) in the written records

Verse 53

وَكُلُّwakulluAnd every
صَغِيرٍۢṣaghīrinsmall
وَكَبِيرٍۢwakabīrinand big
مُّسْتَطَرٌmus'taṭarun(is) written down

Translation

And every small and big (is) written down

Verse 54

إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱلْمُتَّقِينَl-mutaqīnathe righteous
فِىfī(will be) in
جَنَّـٰتٍۢjannātingardens
وَنَهَرٍۢwanaharinand river

Translation

Indeed the righteous (will be) in gardens and river

Verse 55

فِىfīIn
مَقْعَدِmaqʿadia seat
صِدْقٍṣid'qin(of) honor
عِندَʿindanear
مَلِيكٍۢmalīkina King
مُّقْتَدِرٍۭmuq'tadirinMost Powerful

Translation

In a seat (of) honor near a King Most Powerful
