Chapter 56Meccan96 Verses

Verse 1

إِذَاidhāWhen
وَقَعَتِwaqaʿatioccurs
ٱلْوَاقِعَةُl-wāqiʿatuthe Event

Translation

When occurs the Event

Verse 2

لَيْسَlaysaNot
لِوَقْعَتِهَاliwaqʿatihāat its occurrence
كَاذِبَةٌkādhibatuna denial

Translation

Not at its occurrence a denial

Verse 3

خَافِضَةٌۭkhāfiḍatunBringing down
رَّافِعَةٌrāfiʿatunraising up

Translation

Bringing down raising up

Verse 4

إِذَاidhāWhen
رُجَّتِrujjatiwill be shaken
ٱلْأَرْضُl-arḍuthe earth
رَجًّۭاrajjan(with) a shaking

Translation

When will be shaken the earth (with) a shaking

Verse 5

وَبُسَّتِwabussatiAnd will be crumbled
ٱلْجِبَالُl-jibāluthe mountains
بَسًّۭاbassan(with awful) crumbling

Translation

And will be crumbled the mountains (with awful) crumbling

Verse 6

فَكَانَتْfakānatSo they become
هَبَآءًۭhabāandust particles
مُّنۢبَثًّۭاmunbathandispersing

Translation

So they become dust particles dispersing

Verse 7

وَكُنتُمْwakuntumAnd you will become
أَزْوَٰجًۭاazwājankinds
ثَلَـٰثَةًۭthalāthatanthree

Translation

And you will become kinds three

Verse 8

فَأَصْحَـٰبُfa-aṣḥābuThen (the) companions
ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِl-maymanati(of) the right
مَآmāwhat
أَصْحَـٰبُaṣḥābu(are the) companions
ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِl-maymanati(of) the right

Translation

Then (the) companions (of) the right what (are the) companions (of) the right

Verse 9

وَأَصْحَـٰبُwa-aṣḥābuAnd (the) companions
ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِl-mashamati(of) the left
مَآmāwhat
أَصْحَـٰبُaṣḥābu(are the) companions
ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِl-mashamati(of) the left

Translation

And (the) companions (of) the left what (are the) companions (of) the left

Verse 10

وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَwal-sābiqūnaAnd the foremost
ٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَl-sābiqūna(are) the foremost

Translation

And the foremost (are) the foremost

Verse 11

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThose
ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَl-muqarabūna(are) the nearest ones

Translation

Those (are) the nearest ones

Verse 12

فِىfīIn
جَنَّـٰتِjannātiGardens
ٱلنَّعِيمِl-naʿīmi(of) Pleasure

Translation

In Gardens (of) Pleasure

Verse 13

ثُلَّةٌۭthullatunA company
مِّنَminaof
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīnathe former (people)

Translation

A company of the former (people)

Verse 14

وَقَلِيلٌۭwaqalīlunAnd a few
مِّنَminaof
ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَl-ākhirīnathe later (people)

Translation

And a few of the later (people)

Verse 15

عَلَىٰʿalāOn
سُرُرٍۢsururinthrones
مَّوْضُونَةٍۢmawḍūnatindecorated

Translation

On thrones decorated

Verse 16

مُّتَّكِـِٔينَmuttakiīnaReclining
عَلَيْهَاʿalayhāon them
مُتَقَـٰبِلِينَmutaqābilīnafacing each other

Translation

Reclining on them facing each other

Verse 17

يَطُوفُyaṭūfuWill circulate
عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimamong them
وِلْدَٰنٌۭwil'dānunboys
مُّخَلَّدُونَmukhalladūnaimmortal

Translation

Will circulate among them boys immortal

Verse 18

بِأَكْوَابٍۢbi-akwābinWith vessels
وَأَبَارِيقَwa-abārīqaand jugs
وَكَأْسٍۢwakasinand a cup
مِّنminfrom
مَّعِينٍۢmaʿīnina flowing stream

Translation

With vessels and jugs and a cup from a flowing stream

Verse 19

لَّاlāNot
يُصَدَّعُونَyuṣaddaʿūnathey will get headache
عَنْهَاʿanhātherefrom
وَلَاwalāand not
يُنزِفُونَyunzifūnathey will get intoxicated

Translation

Not they will get headache therefrom and not they will get intoxicated

Verse 20

وَفَـٰكِهَةٍۢwafākihatinAnd fruits
مِّمَّاmimmāof what
يَتَخَيَّرُونَyatakhayyarūnathey select

Translation

And fruits of what they select

Verse 21

وَلَحْمِwalaḥmiAnd (the) flesh
طَيْرٍۢṭayrin(of) fowls
مِّمَّاmimmāof what
يَشْتَهُونَyashtahūnathey desire

Translation

And (the) flesh (of) fowls of what they desire

Verse 22

وَحُورٌwaḥūrunAnd fair ones
عِينٌۭʿīnun(with) large eyes

Translation

And fair ones (with) large eyes

Verse 23

كَأَمْثَـٰلِka-amthāliLike
ٱللُّؤْلُؤِl-lu'lu-ipearls
ٱلْمَكْنُونِl-maknūniwell-protected

Translation

Like pearls well-protected

Verse 24

جَزَآءًۢjazāanA reward
بِمَاbimāfor what
كَانُوا۟kānūthey used (to)
يَعْمَلُونَyaʿmalūnado

Translation

A reward for what they used (to) do

Verse 25

لَاlāNot
يَسْمَعُونَyasmaʿūnathey will hear
فِيهَاfīhātherein
لَغْوًۭاlaghwanvain talk
وَلَاwalāand not
تَأْثِيمًاtathīmansinful (speech)

Translation

Not they will hear therein vain talk and not sinful (speech)

Verse 26

إِلَّاillāExcept
قِيلًۭاqīlana saying
سَلَـٰمًۭاsalāmanPeace
سَلَـٰمًۭاsalāmanPeace

Translation

Except a saying Peace Peace

Verse 27

وَأَصْحَـٰبُwa-aṣḥābuAnd (the) companions
ٱلْيَمِينِl-yamīni(of) the right
مَآmāwhat
أَصْحَـٰبُaṣḥābu(are the) companions
ٱلْيَمِينِl-yamīni(of) the right

Translation

And (the) companions (of) the right what (are the) companions (of) the right

Verse 28

فِىfīAmong
سِدْرٍۢsid'rinlote trees
مَّخْضُودٍۢmakhḍūdinthornless

Translation

Among lote trees thornless

Verse 29

وَطَلْحٍۢwaṭalḥinAnd banana trees
مَّنضُودٍۢmanḍūdinlayered

Translation

And banana trees layered

Verse 30

وَظِلٍّۢwaẓillinAnd shade
مَّمْدُودٍۢmamdūdinextended

Translation

And shade extended

Verse 31

وَمَآءٍۢwamāinAnd water
مَّسْكُوبٍۢmaskūbinpoured forth

Translation

And water poured forth

Verse 32

وَفَـٰكِهَةٍۢwafākihatinAnd fruit
كَثِيرَةٍۢkathīratinabundant

Translation

And fruit abundant

Verse 33

لَّاlāNot
مَقْطُوعَةٍۢmaqṭūʿatinlimited
وَلَاwalāand not
مَمْنُوعَةٍۢmamnūʿatinforbidden

Translation

Not limited and not forbidden

Verse 34

وَفُرُشٍۢwafurushinAnd (on) couches
مَّرْفُوعَةٍmarfūʿatinraised

Translation

And (on) couches raised

Verse 35

إِنَّآinnāIndeed, We
أَنشَأْنَـٰهُنَّanshanāhunna[We] have produced them
إِنشَآءًۭinshāan(into) a creation

Translation

Indeed, We [We] have produced them (into) a creation

Verse 36

فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُنَّfajaʿalnāhunnaAnd We have made them
أَبْكَارًاabkāranvirgins

Translation

And We have made them virgins

Verse 37

عُرُبًاʿurubanDevoted
أَتْرَابًۭاatrābanequals in age

Translation

Devoted equals in age

Verse 38

لِّأَصْحَـٰبِli-aṣḥābiFor (the) companions
ٱلْيَمِينِl-yamīni(of) the right

Translation

For (the) companions (of) the right

Verse 39

ثُلَّةٌۭthullatunA company
مِّنَminaof
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīnathe former people

Translation

A company of the former people

Verse 40

وَثُلَّةٌۭwathullatunAnd a company
مِّنَminaof
ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَl-ākhirīnathe later people

Translation

And a company of the later people

Verse 41

وَأَصْحَـٰبُwa-aṣḥābuAnd (the) companions
ٱلشِّمَالِl-shimāli(of) the left
مَآmāwhat
أَصْحَـٰبُaṣḥābu(are the) companions
ٱلشِّمَالِl-shimāli(of) the left

Translation

And (the) companions (of) the left what (are the) companions (of) the left

Verse 42

فِىfīIn
سَمُومٍۢsamūminscorching fire
وَحَمِيمٍۢwaḥamīminand scalding water

Translation

In scorching fire and scalding water

Verse 43

وَظِلٍّۢwaẓillinAnd a shade
مِّنminof
يَحْمُومٍۢyaḥmūminblack smoke

Translation

And a shade of black smoke

Verse 44

لَّاlāNot
بَارِدٍۢbāridincool
وَلَاwalāand not
كَرِيمٍkarīminpleasant

Translation

Not cool and not pleasant

Verse 45

إِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed, they
كَانُوا۟kānūwere
قَبْلَqablabefore
ذَٰلِكَdhālikathat
مُتْرَفِينَmut'rafīnaindulging in affluence

Translation

Indeed, they were before that indulging in affluence

Verse 46

وَكَانُوا۟wakānūAnd were
يُصِرُّونَyuṣirrūnapersisting
عَلَىʿalāin
ٱلْحِنثِl-ḥinthithe sin
ٱلْعَظِيمِl-ʿaẓīmithe great

Translation

And were persisting in the sin the great

Verse 47

وَكَانُوا۟wakānūAnd they used (to)
يَقُولُونَyaqūlūnasay
أَئِذَاa-idhāWhen
مِتْنَاmit'nāwe die
وَكُنَّاwakunnāand become
تُرَابًۭاturābandust
وَعِظَـٰمًاwaʿiẓāmanand bones
أَءِنَّاa-innāwill we
لَمَبْعُوثُونَlamabʿūthūnasurely be resurrected

Translation

And they used (to) say When we die and become dust and bones will we surely be resurrected

Verse 48

أَوَءَابَآؤُنَاawaābāunāAnd also our fathers
ٱلْأَوَّلُونَl-awalūnaformer

Translation

And also our fathers former

Verse 49

قُلْqulSay
إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīnathe former
وَٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَwal-ākhirīnaand the later people

Translation

Say Indeed the former and the later people

Verse 50

لَمَجْمُوعُونَlamajmūʿūnaSurely, will be gathered
إِلَىٰilāfor
مِيقَـٰتِmīqāti(the) appointment
يَوْمٍۢyawmin(of) a Day
مَّعْلُومٍۢmaʿlūminwell-known

Translation

Surely, will be gathered for (the) appointment (of) a Day well-known

Verse 51

ثُمَّthummaThen
إِنَّكُمْinnakumindeed you
أَيُّهَاayyuhāO those astray
ٱلضَّآلُّونَl-ḍālūnaO those astray
ٱلْمُكَذِّبُونَl-mukadhibūnathe deniers

Translation

Then indeed you O those astray O those astray the deniers

Verse 52

لَـَٔاكِلُونَlaākilūnaWill surely eat
مِنminfrom
شَجَرٍۢshajarin(the) tree
مِّنminof
زَقُّومٍۢzaqqūminZaqqum

Translation

Will surely eat from (the) tree of Zaqqum

Verse 53

فَمَالِـُٔونَfamāliūnaThen will fill
مِنْهَاmin'hāwith it
ٱلْبُطُونَl-buṭūnathe bellies

Translation

Then will fill with it the bellies

Verse 54

فَشَـٰرِبُونَfashāribūnaAnd drink
عَلَيْهِʿalayhiover it
مِنَmina[from]
ٱلْحَمِيمِl-ḥamīmithe scalding water

Translation

And drink over it [from] the scalding water

Verse 55

فَشَـٰرِبُونَfashāribūnaAnd will drink
شُرْبَshur'ba(as) drinking
ٱلْهِيمِl-hīmi(of) the thirsty camels

Translation

And will drink (as) drinking (of) the thirsty camels

Verse 56

هَـٰذَاhādhāThis
نُزُلُهُمْnuzuluhum(is) their hospitality
يَوْمَyawma(on the) Day
ٱلدِّينِl-dīni(of) Judgment

Translation

This (is) their hospitality (on the) Day (of) Judgment

Verse 57

نَحْنُnaḥnuWe
خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْkhalaqnākum[We] created you
فَلَوْلَاfalawlāso why (do) not
تُصَدِّقُونَtuṣaddiqūnayou admit the truth

Translation

We [We] created you so why (do) not you admit the truth

Verse 58

أَفَرَءَيْتُمafara-aytumDo you see
مَّاmāwhat
تُمْنُونَtum'nūnayou emit

Translation

Do you see what you emit

Verse 59

ءَأَنتُمْa-antumIs it you
تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓtakhluqūnahuwho create it
أَمْamor
نَحْنُnaḥnu(are) We
ٱلْخَـٰلِقُونَl-khāliqūnathe Creators

Translation

Is it you who create it or (are) We the Creators

Verse 60

نَحْنُnaḥnuWe
قَدَّرْنَاqaddarnā[We] have decreed
بَيْنَكُمُbaynakumuamong you
ٱلْمَوْتَl-mawtathe death
وَمَاwamāand not
نَحْنُnaḥnuWe
بِمَسْبُوقِينَbimasbūqīna(are) outrun

Translation

We [We] have decreed among you the death and not We (are) outrun

Verse 61

عَلَىٰٓʿalāIn
أَنanthat
نُّبَدِّلَnubaddilaWe (will) change
أَمْثَـٰلَكُمْamthālakumyour likeness[es]
وَنُنشِئَكُمْwanunshi-akumand produce you
فِىfīin
مَاmāwhat
لَاlānot
تَعْلَمُونَtaʿlamūnayou know

Translation

In that We (will) change your likeness[es] and produce you in what not you know

Verse 62

وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainly
عَلِمْتُمُʿalim'tumuyou know
ٱلنَّشْأَةَl-nashatathe creation
ٱلْأُولَىٰl-ūlāthe first
فَلَوْلَاfalawlāso why not
تَذَكَّرُونَtadhakkarūnayou take heed

Translation

And certainly you know the creation the first so why not you take heed

Verse 63

أَفَرَءَيْتُمafara-aytumAnd do you see
مَّاmāwhat
تَحْرُثُونَtaḥruthūnayou sow

Translation

And do you see what you sow

Verse 64

ءَأَنتُمْa-antumIs it you (who)
تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓtazraʿūnahucause it to grow
أَمْamor
نَحْنُnaḥnu(are) We
ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَl-zāriʿūnathe Ones Who grow

Translation

Is it you (who) cause it to grow or (are) We the Ones Who grow

Verse 65

لَوْlawIf
نَشَآءُnashāuWe willed
لَجَعَلْنَـٰهُlajaʿalnāhuWe (would) surely, make it
حُطَـٰمًۭاḥuṭāmandebris
فَظَلْتُمْfaẓaltumthen you would remain
تَفَكَّهُونَtafakkahūnawondering

Translation

If We willed We (would) surely, make it debris then you would remain wondering

Verse 66

إِنَّاinnāIndeed, we
لَمُغْرَمُونَlamugh'ramūnasurely are laden with debt

Translation

Indeed, we surely are laden with debt

Verse 67

بَلْbalNay
نَحْنُnaḥnuwe
مَحْرُومُونَmaḥrūmūna(are) deprived

Translation

Nay we (are) deprived

Verse 68

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُafara-aytumuDo you see
ٱلْمَآءَl-māathe water
ٱلَّذِىalladhīwhich
تَشْرَبُونَtashrabūnayou drink

Translation

Do you see the water which you drink

Verse 69

ءَأَنتُمْa-antumIs it you
أَنزَلْتُمُوهُanzaltumūhuwho send it down
مِنَminafrom
ٱلْمُزْنِl-muz'nithe rain clouds
أَمْamor
نَحْنُnaḥnuWe
ٱلْمُنزِلُونَl-munzilūna(are) the Ones to send

Translation

Is it you who send it down from the rain clouds or We (are) the Ones to send

Verse 70

لَوْlawIf
نَشَآءُnashāuWe willed
جَعَلْنَـٰهُjaʿalnāhuWe (could) make it
أُجَاجًۭاujājansalty
فَلَوْلَاfalawlāthen why are you not grateful
تَشْكُرُونَtashkurūnathen why are you not grateful

Translation

If We willed We (could) make it salty then why are you not grateful then why are you not grateful

Verse 71

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُafara-aytumuDo you see
ٱلنَّارَl-nārathe Fire
ٱلَّتِىallatīwhich
تُورُونَtūrūnayou ignite

Translation

Do you see the Fire which you ignite

Verse 72

ءَأَنتُمْa-antumIs it you
أَنشَأْتُمْanshatumwho produced
شَجَرَتَهَآshajaratahāits tree
أَمْamor
نَحْنُnaḥnuWe
ٱلْمُنشِـُٔونَl-munshiūna(are) the Producers

Translation

Is it you who produced its tree or We (are) the Producers

Verse 73

نَحْنُnaḥnuWe
جَعَلْنَـٰهَاjaʿalnāhāhave made it
تَذْكِرَةًۭtadhkiratana reminder
وَمَتَـٰعًۭاwamatāʿanand a provision
لِّلْمُقْوِينَlil'muq'wīnafor the wayfarers in the desert

Translation

We have made it a reminder and a provision for the wayfarers in the desert

Verse 74

فَسَبِّحْfasabbiḥSo glorify
بِٱسْمِbi-is'mi(the) name
رَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lord
ٱلْعَظِيمِl-ʿaẓīmithe Most Great

Translation

So glorify (the) name (of) your Lord the Most Great

Verse 75

۞ فَلَآfalāBut nay
أُقْسِمُuq'simuI swear
بِمَوَٰقِعِbimawāqiʿiby setting
ٱلنُّجُومِl-nujūmi(of) the stars

Translation

But nay I swear by setting (of) the stars

Verse 76

وَإِنَّهُۥwa-innahuAnd indeed, it
لَقَسَمٌۭlaqasamun(is) surely an oath
لَّوْlawif
تَعْلَمُونَtaʿlamūnayou know
عَظِيمٌʿaẓīmungreat

Translation

And indeed, it (is) surely an oath if you know great

Verse 77

إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, it
لَقُرْءَانٌۭlaqur'ānun(is) surely, a Quran
كَرِيمٌۭkarīmunnoble

Translation

Indeed, it (is) surely, a Quran noble

Verse 78

فِىfīIn
كِتَـٰبٍۢkitābina Book
مَّكْنُونٍۢmaknūninwell-guarded

Translation

In a Book well-guarded

Verse 79

لَّاlāNone
يَمَسُّهُۥٓyamassuhutouch it
إِلَّاillāexcept
ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَl-muṭaharūnathe purified

Translation

None touch it except the purified

Verse 80

تَنزِيلٌۭtanzīlunA Revelation
مِّنminfrom
رَّبِّrabbi(the) Lord
ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَl-ʿālamīna(of) the worlds

Translation

A Revelation from (the) Lord (of) the worlds

Verse 81

أَفَبِهَـٰذَاafabihādhāThen is it to this
ٱلْحَدِيثِl-ḥadīthistatement
أَنتُمantumthat you
مُّدْهِنُونَmud'hinūna(are) indifferent

Translation

Then is it to this statement that you (are) indifferent

Verse 82

وَتَجْعَلُونَwatajʿalūnaAnd you make
رِزْقَكُمْriz'qakumyour provision
أَنَّكُمْannakumthat you
تُكَذِّبُونَtukadhibūnadeny

Translation

And you make your provision that you deny

Verse 83

فَلَوْلَآfalawlāThen why not
إِذَاidhāwhen
بَلَغَتِbalaghatiit reaches
ٱلْحُلْقُومَl-ḥul'qūmathe throat

Translation

Then why not when it reaches the throat

Verse 84

وَأَنتُمْwa-antumAnd you
حِينَئِذٍۢḥīna-idhin(at) that time
تَنظُرُونَtanẓurūnalook on

Translation

And you (at) that time look on

Verse 85

وَنَحْنُwanaḥnuAnd We
أَقْرَبُaqrabu(are) nearer
إِلَيْهِilayhito him
مِنكُمْminkumthan you
وَلَـٰكِنwalākinbut
لَّاlāyou (do) not see
تُبْصِرُونَtub'ṣirūnayou (do) not see

Translation

And We (are) nearer to him than you but you (do) not see you (do) not see

Verse 86

فَلَوْلَآfalawlāThen why not
إِنinif
كُنتُمْkuntumyou are
غَيْرَghayranot
مَدِينِينَmadīnīnato be recompensed

Translation

Then why not if you are not to be recompensed

Verse 87

تَرْجِعُونَهَآtarjiʿūnahāBring it back
إِنinif
كُنتُمْkuntumyou are
صَـٰدِقِينَṣādiqīnatruthful

Translation

Bring it back if you are truthful

Verse 88

فَأَمَّآfa-ammāThen
إِنinif
كَانَkānahe was
مِنَminaof
ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَl-muqarabīnathose brought near

Translation

Then if he was of those brought near

Verse 89

فَرَوْحٌۭfarawḥunThen rest
وَرَيْحَانٌۭwarayḥānunand bounty
وَجَنَّتُwajannatuand a Garden
نَعِيمٍۢnaʿīmin(of) Pleasure

Translation

Then rest and bounty and a Garden (of) Pleasure

Verse 90

وَأَمَّآwa-ammāAnd
إِنinif
كَانَkānahe was
مِنْminof
أَصْحَـٰبِaṣḥābi(the) companions
ٱلْيَمِينِl-yamīni(of) the right

Translation

And if he was of (the) companions (of) the right

Verse 91

فَسَلَـٰمٌۭfasalāmunThen, peace
لَّكَlakafor you
مِنْmin[from]
أَصْحَـٰبِaṣḥābi(the) companions
ٱلْيَمِينِl-yamīni(of) the right

Translation

Then, peace for you [from] (the) companions (of) the right

Verse 92

وَأَمَّآwa-ammāBut
إِنinif
كَانَkānahe was
مِنَminaof
ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَl-mukadhibīnathe deniers
ٱلضَّآلِّينَl-ḍālīnathe astray

Translation

But if he was of the deniers the astray

Verse 93

فَنُزُلٌۭfanuzulunThen, hospitality
مِّنْminof
حَمِيمٍۢḥamīmin(the) scalding water

Translation

Then, hospitality of (the) scalding water

Verse 94

وَتَصْلِيَةُwataṣliyatuAnd burning
جَحِيمٍjaḥīmin(in) Hellfire

Translation

And burning (in) Hellfire

Verse 95

إِنَّinnaIndeed
هَـٰذَاhādhāthis
لَهُوَlahuwasurely, it
حَقُّḥaqqu(is the) truth
ٱلْيَقِينِl-yaqīnicertain

Translation

Indeed this surely, it (is the) truth certain

Verse 96

فَسَبِّحْfasabbiḥSo glorify
بِٱسْمِbi-is'mi(the) name
رَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lord
ٱلْعَظِيمِl-ʿaẓīmithe Most Great

Translation

So glorify (the) name (of) your Lord the Most Great
