The Hypocrites

Chapter 63Medinan11 Verses

Verse 1

إِذَاidhāWhen
جَآءَكَjāakacome to you
ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَl-munāfiqūnathe hypocrites
قَالُوا۟qālūthey say
نَشْهَدُnashhaduWe testify
إِنَّكَinnakathat you
لَرَسُولُlarasūlu(are) surely (the) Messenger
ٱللَّهِ ۗl-lahi(of) Allah
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
يَعْلَمُyaʿlamuknows
إِنَّكَinnakathat you
لَرَسُولُهُۥlarasūluhu(are) surely His Messenger
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuand Allah
يَشْهَدُyashhadutestifies
إِنَّinnathat
ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَl-munāfiqīnathe hypocrites
لَكَـٰذِبُونَlakādhibūna(are) surely liars

Translation

When come to you the hypocrites they say We testify that you (are) surely (the) Messenger (of) Allah And Allah knows that you (are) surely His Messenger and Allah testifies that the hypocrites (are) surely liars

Verse 2

ٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ittakhadhūThey take
أَيْمَـٰنَهُمْaymānahumtheir oaths
جُنَّةًۭjunnatan(as) a cover
فَصَدُّوا۟faṣaddūso they turn away
عَنʿanfrom
سَبِيلِsabīli(the) Way
ٱللَّهِ ۚl-lahi(of) Allah
إِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed, [they]
سَآءَsāaevil is
مَاmāwhat
كَانُوا۟kānūthey used to
يَعْمَلُونَyaʿmalūnado

Translation

They take their oaths (as) a cover so they turn away from (the) Way (of) Allah Indeed, [they] evil is what they used to do

Verse 3

ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat
بِأَنَّهُمْbi-annahum(is) because
ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūthey believed
ثُمَّthummathen
كَفَرُوا۟kafarūthey disbelieved
فَطُبِعَfaṭubiʿaso were sealed
عَلَىٰʿalā[upon]
قُلُوبِهِمْqulūbihimtheir hearts
فَهُمْfahumso they
لَاlā(do) not
يَفْقَهُونَyafqahūnaunderstand

Translation

That (is) because they believed then they disbelieved so were sealed [upon] their hearts so they (do) not understand

Verse 4

۞ وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
رَأَيْتَهُمْra-aytahumyou see them
تُعْجِبُكَtuʿ'jibukapleases you
أَجْسَامُهُمْ ۖajsāmuhumtheir bodies
وَإِنwa-inand if
يَقُولُوا۟yaqūlūthey speak
تَسْمَعْtasmaʿyou listen
لِقَوْلِهِمْ ۖliqawlihimto their speech
كَأَنَّهُمْka-annahumas if they (were)
خُشُبٌۭkhushubunpieces of wood
مُّسَنَّدَةٌۭ ۖmusannadatunpropped up
يَحْسَبُونَyaḥsabūnaThey think
كُلَّkullaevery
صَيْحَةٍṣayḥatinshout
عَلَيْهِمْ ۚʿalayhim(is) against them
هُمُhumuThey
ٱلْعَدُوُّl-ʿaduwu(are) the enemy
فَٱحْذَرْهُمْ ۚfa-iḥ'dharhumso beware of them
قَـٰتَلَهُمُqātalahumuMay destroy them
ٱللَّهُ ۖl-lahuAllah
أَنَّىٰannāHow
يُؤْفَكُونَyu'fakūnaare they deluded

Translation

And when you see them pleases you their bodies and if they speak you listen to their speech as if they (were) pieces of wood propped up They think every shout (is) against them They (are) the enemy so beware of them May destroy them Allah How are they deluded

Verse 5

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
قِيلَqīlait is said
لَهُمْlahumto them
تَعَالَوْا۟taʿālawCome
يَسْتَغْفِرْyastaghfirwill ask forgiveness
لَكُمْlakumfor you
رَسُولُrasūlu(the) Messenger
ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
لَوَّوْا۟lawwawThey turn aside
رُءُوسَهُمْruūsahumtheir heads
وَرَأَيْتَهُمْwara-aytahumand you see them
يَصُدُّونَyaṣuddūnaturning away
وَهُمwahumwhile they
مُّسْتَكْبِرُونَmus'takbirūna(are) arrogant

Translation

And when it is said to them Come will ask forgiveness for you (the) Messenger (of) Allah They turn aside their heads and you see them turning away while they (are) arrogant

Verse 6

سَوَآءٌsawāon(It) is same
عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimfor them
أَسْتَغْفَرْتَastaghfartawhether you ask forgiveness
لَهُمْlahumfor them
أَمْamor
لَمْlam(do) not
تَسْتَغْفِرْtastaghfirask forgiveness
لَهُمْlahumfor them
لَنlanNever
يَغْفِرَyaghfirawill forgive
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
لَهُمْ ۚlahum[to] them
إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
لَاlā(does) not
يَهْدِىyahdīguide
ٱلْقَوْمَl-qawmathe people
ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَl-fāsiqīnathe defiantly disobedient

Translation

(It) is same for them whether you ask forgiveness for them or (do) not ask forgiveness for them Never will forgive Allah [to] them Indeed Allah (does) not guide the people the defiantly disobedient

Verse 7

هُمُhumuThey
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(are) those who
يَقُولُونَyaqūlūnasay
لَاlā(Do) not
تُنفِقُوا۟tunfiqūspend
عَلَىٰʿalāon
مَنْman(those) who
عِندَʿinda(are) with
رَسُولِrasūli(the) Messenger
ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
حَتَّىٰḥattāuntil
يَنفَضُّوا۟ ۗyanfaḍḍūthey disband
وَلِلَّهِwalillahiAnd for Allah
خَزَآئِنُkhazāinu(are the) treasures
ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwāti(of) the heavens
وَٱلْأَرْضِwal-arḍiand the earth
وَلَـٰكِنَّwalākinnabut
ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَl-munāfiqīnathe hypocrites
لَاlā(do) not
يَفْقَهُونَyafqahūnaunderstand

Translation

They (are) those who say (Do) not spend on (those) who (are) with (the) Messenger (of) Allah until they disband And for Allah (are the) treasures (of) the heavens and the earth but the hypocrites (do) not understand

Verse 8

يَقُولُونَyaqūlūnaThey say
لَئِنla-inIf
رَّجَعْنَآrajaʿnāwe return
إِلَىilāto
ٱلْمَدِينَةِl-madīnatiAl-Madinah
لَيُخْرِجَنَّlayukh'rijannasurely, will expel
ٱلْأَعَزُّl-aʿazuthe more honorable
مِنْهَاmin'hāfrom it
ٱلْأَذَلَّ ۚl-adhalathe more humble
وَلِلَّهِwalillahiBut for Allah
ٱلْعِزَّةُl-ʿizatu(is) the honor
وَلِرَسُولِهِۦwalirasūlihiand for His Messenger
وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَwalil'mu'minīnaand for the believers
وَلَـٰكِنَّwalākinnabut
ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَl-munāfiqīnathe hypocrites
لَاlā(do) not
يَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūnaknow

Translation

They say If we return to Al-Madinah surely, will expel the more honorable from it the more humble But for Allah (is) the honor and for His Messenger and for the believers but the hypocrites (do) not know

Verse 9

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnayou (who)
ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieve
لَاlā(Let) not
تُلْهِكُمْtul'hikumdivert you
أَمْوَٰلُكُمْamwālukumyour wealth
وَلَآwalāand not
أَوْلَـٰدُكُمْawlādukumyour children
عَنʿanfrom
ذِكْرِdhik'ri(the) remembrance
ٱللَّهِ ۚl-lahi(of) Allah
وَمَنwamanAnd whoever
يَفْعَلْyafʿaldoes
ذَٰلِكَdhālikathat
فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَfa-ulāikathen those
هُمُhumu[they]
ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَl-khāsirūna(are) the losers

Translation

O you (who) believe (Let) not divert you your wealth and not your children from (the) remembrance (of) Allah And whoever does that then those [they] (are) the losers

Verse 10

وَأَنفِقُوا۟wa-anfiqūAnd spend
مِنminfrom
مَّاmāwhat
رَزَقْنَـٰكُمrazaqnākumWe have provided you
مِّنminfrom
قَبْلِqablibefore
أَنan[that]
يَأْتِىَyatiyacomes
أَحَدَكُمُaḥadakumu(to) one of you
ٱلْمَوْتُl-mawtuthe death
فَيَقُولَfayaqūlaand he says
رَبِّrabbiMy Lord
لَوْلَآlawlāWhy not
أَخَّرْتَنِىٓakhartanīYou delay me
إِلَىٰٓilāfor
أَجَلٍۢajalina term
قَرِيبٍۢqarībinnear
فَأَصَّدَّقَfa-aṣṣaddaqaso I would give charity
وَأَكُنwa-akunand be
مِّنَminaamong
ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَl-ṣāliḥīnathe righteous

Translation

And spend from what We have provided you from before [that] comes (to) one of you the death and he says My Lord Why not You delay me for a term near so I would give charity and be among the righteous

Verse 11

وَلَنwalanBut never
يُؤَخِّرَyu-akhirawill (be) delayed
ٱللَّهُl-lahu(by) Allah
نَفْسًاnafsana soul
إِذَاidhāwhen
جَآءَjāahas come
أَجَلُهَا ۚajaluhāits term
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
خَبِيرٌۢkhabīrun(is) All-Aware
بِمَاbimāof what
تَعْمَلُونَtaʿmalūnayou do

Translation

But never will (be) delayed (by) Allah a soul when has come its term And Allah (is) All-Aware of what you do
