Chapter 68Meccan52 Verses

Verse 1

نٓ ۚnoonNun
وَٱلْقَلَمِwal-qalamiBy the pen
وَمَاwamāand what
يَسْطُرُونَyasṭurūnathey write

Translation

Nun By the pen and what they write

Verse 2

مَآNot
أَنتَantayou (are)
بِنِعْمَةِbiniʿ'matiby (the) Grace
رَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lord
بِمَجْنُونٍۢbimajnūnina madman

Translation

Not you (are) by (the) Grace (of) your Lord a madman

Verse 3

وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed
لَكَlakafor you
لَأَجْرًاla-ajransurely (is) a reward
غَيْرَghayrawithout
مَمْنُونٍۢmamnūninend

Translation

And indeed for you surely (is) a reward without end

Verse 4

وَإِنَّكَwa-innakaAnd indeed, you
لَعَلَىٰlaʿalāsurely (are)
خُلُقٍkhuluqin(of) a moral character
عَظِيمٍۢʿaẓīmingreat

Translation

And indeed, you surely (are) (of) a moral character great

Verse 5

فَسَتُبْصِرُfasatub'ṣiruSo you will see
وَيُبْصِرُونَwayub'ṣirūnaand they will see

Translation

So you will see and they will see

Verse 6

بِأَييِّكُمُbi-ayyikumuWhich of you
ٱلْمَفْتُونُl-maftūnu(is) the afflicted one

Translation

Which of you (is) the afflicted one

Verse 7

إِنَّinnaIndeed
رَبَّكَrabbakayour Lord
هُوَhuwaHe
أَعْلَمُaʿlamu(is) most knowing
بِمَنbimanof (he) who
ضَلَّḍallahas strayed
عَنʿanfrom
سَبِيلِهِۦsabīlihiHis way
وَهُوَwahuwaand He
أَعْلَمُaʿlamu(is) most knowing
بِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَbil-muh'tadīnaof the guided ones

Translation

Indeed your Lord He (is) most knowing of (he) who has strayed from His way and He (is) most knowing of the guided ones

Verse 8

فَلَاfalāSo (do) not
تُطِعِtuṭiʿiobey
ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَl-mukadhibīnathe deniers

Translation

So (do) not obey the deniers

Verse 9

وَدُّوا۟waddūThey wish
لَوْlawthat
تُدْهِنُtud'hinuyou should compromise
فَيُدْهِنُونَfayud'hinūnaso they would compromise

Translation

They wish that you should compromise so they would compromise

Verse 10

وَلَاwalāAnd (do) not
تُطِعْtuṭiʿobey
كُلَّkullaevery
حَلَّافٍۢḥallāfinhabitual swearer
مَّهِينٍmahīninworthless

Translation

And (do) not obey every habitual swearer worthless

Verse 11

هَمَّازٍۢhammāzinDefamer
مَّشَّآءٍۭmashāingoing about
بِنَمِيمٍۢbinamīminwith malicious gossip

Translation

Defamer going about with malicious gossip

Verse 12

مَّنَّاعٍۢmannāʿinA preventer
لِّلْخَيْرِlil'khayriof (the) good
مُعْتَدٍmuʿ'tadintransgressor
أَثِيمٍathīminsinful

Translation

A preventer of (the) good transgressor sinful

Verse 13

عُتُلٍّۭʿutullinCruel
بَعْدَbaʿdaafter
ذَٰلِكَdhālika(all) that
زَنِيمٍzanīminutterly useless

Translation

Cruel after (all) that utterly useless

Verse 14

أَنanBecause
كَانَkāna(he) is
ذَاdhāa possessor
مَالٍۢmālin(of) wealth
وَبَنِينَwabanīnaand children

Translation

Because (he) is a possessor (of) wealth and children

Verse 15

إِذَاidhāWhen
تُتْلَىٰtut'lāare recited
عَلَيْهِʿalayhito him
ءَايَـٰتُنَاāyātunāOur Verses
قَالَqālahe says
أَسَـٰطِيرُasāṭīruStories
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīna(of) the former (people)

Translation

When are recited to him Our Verses he says Stories (of) the former (people)

Verse 16

سَنَسِمُهُۥsanasimuhuWe will brand him
عَلَىʿalāon
ٱلْخُرْطُومِl-khur'ṭūmithe snout

Translation

We will brand him on the snout

Verse 17

إِنَّاinnāIndeed, We
بَلَوْنَـٰهُمْbalawnāhumhave tried them
كَمَاkamāas
بَلَوْنَآbalawnāWe tried
أَصْحَـٰبَaṣḥāba(the) companions
ٱلْجَنَّةِl-janati(of) the garden
إِذْidhwhen
أَقْسَمُوا۟aqsamūthey swore
لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَاlayaṣrimunnahāto pluck its fruit
مُصْبِحِينَmuṣ'biḥīna(in the) morning

Translation

Indeed, We have tried them as We tried (the) companions (of) the garden when they swore to pluck its fruit (in the) morning

Verse 18

وَلَاwalāAnd not
يَسْتَثْنُونَyastathnūnamaking exception

Translation

And not making exception

Verse 19

فَطَافَfaṭāfaSo there came
عَلَيْهَاʿalayhāupon it
طَآئِفٌۭṭāifuna visitation
مِّنminfrom
رَّبِّكَrabbikayour Lord
وَهُمْwahumwhile they
نَآئِمُونَnāimūnawere asleep

Translation

So there came upon it a visitation from your Lord while they were asleep

Verse 20

فَأَصْبَحَتْfa-aṣbaḥatSo it became
كَٱلصَّرِيمِkal-ṣarīmias if reaped

Translation

So it became as if reaped

Verse 21

فَتَنَادَوْا۟fatanādawAnd they called one another
مُصْبِحِينَmuṣ'biḥīna(at) morning

Translation

And they called one another (at) morning

Verse 22

أَنِaniThat
ٱغْدُوا۟igh'dūGo early
عَلَىٰʿalāto
حَرْثِكُمْḥarthikumyour crop
إِنinif
كُنتُمْkuntumyou would
صَـٰرِمِينَṣārimīnapluck (the) fruit

Translation

That Go early to your crop if you would pluck (the) fruit

Verse 23

فَٱنطَلَقُوا۟fa-inṭalaqūSo they went
وَهُمْwahumwhile they
يَتَخَـٰفَتُونَyatakhāfatūnalowered (their) voices

Translation

So they went while they lowered (their) voices

Verse 24

أَنanThat
لَّاNot
يَدْخُلَنَّهَاyadkhulannahāwill enter it
ٱلْيَوْمَl-yawmatoday
عَلَيْكُمʿalaykumupon you
مِّسْكِينٌۭmis'kīnunany poor person

Translation

That Not will enter it today upon you any poor person

Verse 25

وَغَدَوْا۟waghadawAnd they went early
عَلَىٰʿalāwith
حَرْدٍۢḥardindetermination
قَـٰدِرِينَqādirīnaable

Translation

And they went early with determination able

Verse 26

فَلَمَّاfalammāBut when
رَأَوْهَاra-awhāthey saw it
قَالُوٓا۟qālūthey said
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, we
لَضَآلُّونَlaḍāllūna(are) surely lost

Translation

But when they saw it they said Indeed, we (are) surely lost

Verse 27

بَلْbalNay
نَحْنُnaḥnuWe
مَحْرُومُونَmaḥrūmūna(are) deprived

Translation

Nay We (are) deprived

Verse 28

قَالَqālaSaid
أَوْسَطُهُمْawsaṭuhum(the) most moderate of them
أَلَمْalamDid not
أَقُلaqulI tell
لَّكُمْlakumyou
لَوْلَاlawlā'Why not
تُسَبِّحُونَtusabbiḥūnayou glorify (Allah)?'

Translation

Said (the) most moderate of them Did not I tell you 'Why not you glorify (Allah)?'

Verse 29

قَالُوا۟qālūThey said
سُبْحَـٰنَsub'ḥānaGlory be
رَبِّنَآrabbinā(to) our Lord
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, we
كُنَّاkunnā[we] were
ظَـٰلِمِينَẓālimīnawrongdoers

Translation

They said Glory be (to) our Lord Indeed, we [we] were wrongdoers

Verse 30

فَأَقْبَلَfa-aqbalaThen approached
بَعْضُهُمْbaʿḍuhumsome of them
عَلَىٰʿalāto
بَعْضٍۢbaʿḍinothers
يَتَلَـٰوَمُونَyatalāwamūnablaming each other

Translation

Then approached some of them to others blaming each other

Verse 31

قَالُوا۟qālūThey said
يَـٰوَيْلَنَآyāwaylanāO woe to us
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, we
كُنَّاkunnā[we] were
طَـٰغِينَṭāghīnatransgressors

Translation

They said O woe to us Indeed, we [we] were transgressors

Verse 32

عَسَىٰʿasāPerhaps
رَبُّنَآrabbunāour Lord
أَنan[that]
يُبْدِلَنَاyub'dilanāwill substitute for us
خَيْرًۭاkhayrana better
مِّنْهَآmin'hāthan it
إِنَّآinnāIndeed, we
إِلَىٰilāto
رَبِّنَاrabbināour Lord
رَٰغِبُونَrāghibūnaturn devoutly

Translation

Perhaps our Lord [that] will substitute for us a better than it Indeed, we to our Lord turn devoutly

Verse 33

كَذَٰلِكَkadhālikaSuch
ٱلْعَذَابُ ۖl-ʿadhābu(is) the punishment
وَلَعَذَابُwalaʿadhābuAnd surely the punishment
ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِl-ākhirati(of) the Hereafter
أَكْبَرُ ۚakbaru(is) greater
لَوْlawif
كَانُوا۟kānūthey
يَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūnaknow

Translation

Such (is) the punishment And surely the punishment (of) the Hereafter (is) greater if they know

Verse 34

إِنَّinnaIndeed
لِلْمُتَّقِينَlil'muttaqīnafor the righteous
عِندَʿindawith
رَبِّهِمْrabbihimtheir Lord
جَنَّـٰتِjannāti(are) Gardens
ٱلنَّعِيمِl-naʿīmi(of) Delight

Translation

Indeed for the righteous with their Lord (are) Gardens (of) Delight

Verse 35

أَفَنَجْعَلُafanajʿaluThen will We treat
ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَl-mus'limīnathe Muslims
كَٱلْمُجْرِمِينَkal-muj'rimīnalike the criminals

Translation

Then will We treat the Muslims like the criminals

Verse 36

مَاWhat
لَكُمْlakum(is) for you
كَيْفَkayfaHow
تَحْكُمُونَtaḥkumūna(do) you judge

Translation

What (is) for you How (do) you judge

Verse 37

أَمْamOr
لَكُمْlakum(is) for you
كِتَـٰبٌۭkitābuna book
فِيهِfīhiwherein
تَدْرُسُونَtadrusūnayou learn

Translation

Or (is) for you a book wherein you learn

Verse 38

إِنَّinnaIndeed
لَكُمْlakumfor you
فِيهِfīhiin it
لَمَاlamāwhat
تَخَيَّرُونَtakhayyarūnayou choose

Translation

Indeed for you in it what you choose

Verse 39

أَمْamOr
لَكُمْlakumfor you
أَيْمَـٰنٌaymānunoaths
عَلَيْنَاʿalaynāfrom us
بَـٰلِغَةٌbālighatunreaching
إِلَىٰilāto
يَوْمِyawmi(the) Day
ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۙl-qiyāmati(of) the Resurrection
إِنَّinnaindeed
لَكُمْlakumfor you
لَمَاlamā(is) what
تَحْكُمُونَtaḥkumūnayou judge

Translation

Or for you oaths from us reaching to (the) Day (of) the Resurrection indeed for you (is) what you judge

Verse 40

سَلْهُمْsalhumAsk them
أَيُّهُمayyuhumwhich of them
بِذَٰلِكَbidhālikafor that
زَعِيمٌzaʿīmun(is) responsible

Translation

Ask them which of them for that (is) responsible

Verse 41

أَمْamOr
لَهُمْlahum(are) for them
شُرَكَآءُshurakāupartners
فَلْيَأْتُوا۟falyatūThen let them bring
بِشُرَكَآئِهِمْbishurakāihimtheir partners
إِنinif
كَانُوا۟kānūthey are
صَـٰدِقِينَṣādiqīnatruthful

Translation

Or (are) for them partners Then let them bring their partners if they are truthful

Verse 42

يَوْمَyawma(The) Day
يُكْشَفُyuk'shafuwill be uncovered
عَنʿanfrom
سَاقٍۢsāqinthe shin
وَيُدْعَوْنَwayud'ʿawnaand they will be called
إِلَىilāto
ٱلسُّجُودِl-sujūdiprostrate
فَلَاfalābut not
يَسْتَطِيعُونَyastaṭīʿūnathey will be able

Translation

(The) Day will be uncovered from the shin and they will be called to prostrate but not they will be able

Verse 43

خَـٰشِعَةًkhāshiʿatanHumbled
أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْabṣāruhumtheir eyes
تَرْهَقُهُمْtarhaquhumwill cover them
ذِلَّةٌۭ ۖdhillatunhumiliation
وَقَدْwaqadAnd indeed
كَانُوا۟kānūthey were
يُدْعَوْنَyud'ʿawnacalled
إِلَىilāto
ٱلسُّجُودِl-sujūdiprostrate
وَهُمْwahumwhile they
سَـٰلِمُونَsālimūna(were) sound

Translation

Humbled their eyes will cover them humiliation And indeed they were called to prostrate while they (were) sound

Verse 44

فَذَرْنِىfadharnīSo leave Me
وَمَنwamanand whoever
يُكَذِّبُyukadhibudenies
بِهَـٰذَاbihādhāthis
ٱلْحَدِيثِ ۖl-ḥadīthiStatement
سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُمsanastadrijuhumWe will progressively lead them
مِّنْminfrom
حَيْثُḥaythuwhere
لَاnot
يَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūnathey know

Translation

So leave Me and whoever denies this Statement We will progressively lead them from where not they know

Verse 45

وَأُمْلِىwa-um'līAnd I will give respite
لَهُمْ ۚlahumto them
إِنَّinnaIndeed
كَيْدِىkaydīMy plan
مَتِينٌmatīnun(is) firm

Translation

And I will give respite to them Indeed My plan (is) firm

Verse 46

أَمْamOr
تَسْـَٔلُهُمْtasaluhumyou ask them
أَجْرًۭاajrana payment
فَهُمfahumso they
مِّنminfrom
مَّغْرَمٍۢmaghramin(the) debt
مُّثْقَلُونَmuth'qalūna(are) burdened

Translation

Or you ask them a payment so they from (the) debt (are) burdened

Verse 47

أَمْamOr
عِندَهُمُʿindahumu(is) with them
ٱلْغَيْبُl-ghaybuthe unseen
فَهُمْfahumso they
يَكْتُبُونَyaktubūnawrite it

Translation

Or (is) with them the unseen so they write it

Verse 48

فَٱصْبِرْfa-iṣ'birSo be patient
لِحُكْمِliḥuk'mifor (the) decision
رَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lord
وَلَاwalāand (do) not
تَكُنtakunbe
كَصَاحِبِkaṣāḥibilike (the) companion
ٱلْحُوتِl-ḥūti(of) the fish
إِذْidhwhen
نَادَىٰnādāhe called out
وَهُوَwahuwawhile he
مَكْظُومٌۭmakẓūmun(was) distressed

Translation

So be patient for (the) decision (of) your Lord and (do) not be like (the) companion (of) the fish when he called out while he (was) distressed

Verse 49

لَّوْلَآlawlāIf not
أَنanthat
تَدَٰرَكَهُۥtadārakahuovertook him
نِعْمَةٌۭniʿ'matuna Favor
مِّنminfrom
رَّبِّهِۦrabbihihis Lord
لَنُبِذَlanubidhasurely he would have been thrown
بِٱلْعَرَآءِbil-ʿarāionto (the) naked shore
وَهُوَwahuwawhile he
مَذْمُومٌۭmadhmūmun(was) blamed

Translation

If not that overtook him a Favor from his Lord surely he would have been thrown onto (the) naked shore while he (was) blamed

Verse 50

فَٱجْتَبَـٰهُfa-ij'tabāhuBut chose him
رَبُّهُۥrabbuhuhis Lord
فَجَعَلَهُۥfajaʿalahuand made him
مِنَminaof
ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَl-ṣāliḥīnathe righteous

Translation

But chose him his Lord and made him of the righteous

Verse 51

وَإِنwa-inAnd indeed
يَكَادُyakāduwould almost
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieve
لَيُزْلِقُونَكَlayuz'liqūnakasurely make you slip
بِأَبْصَـٰرِهِمْbi-abṣārihimwith their look
لَمَّاlammāwhen
سَمِعُوا۟samiʿūthey hear
ٱلذِّكْرَl-dhik'rathe Message
وَيَقُولُونَwayaqūlūnaand they say
إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, he
لَمَجْنُونٌۭlamajnūnun(is) surely mad

Translation

And indeed would almost those who disbelieve surely make you slip with their look when they hear the Message and they say Indeed, he (is) surely mad

Verse 52

وَمَاwamāAnd not
هُوَhuwait (is)
إِلَّاillābut
ذِكْرٌۭdhik'runa Reminder
لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَlil'ʿālamīnato the worlds

Translation

And not it (is) but a Reminder to the worlds
