Chapter 70Meccan44 Verses

Verse 1

سَأَلَsa-alaAsked
سَآئِلٌۢsāiluna questioner
بِعَذَابٍۢbiʿadhābinabout a punishment
وَاقِعٍۢwāqiʿinbound to happen

Translation

Asked a questioner about a punishment bound to happen

Verse 2

لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَlil'kāfirīnaTo the disbelievers
لَيْسَlaysanot
لَهُۥlahuof it
دَافِعٌۭdāfiʿunany preventer

Translation

To the disbelievers not of it any preventer

Verse 3

مِّنَminaFrom
ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
ذِىdhīOwner
ٱلْمَعَارِجِl-maʿāriji(of) the ways of ascent

Translation

From Allah Owner (of) the ways of ascent

Verse 4

تَعْرُجُtaʿrujuAscend
ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُl-malāikatuthe Angels
وَٱلرُّوحُwal-rūḥuand the Spirit
إِلَيْهِilayhito Him
فِىin
يَوْمٍۢyawmina Day
كَانَkāna[is]
مِقْدَارُهُۥmiq'dāruhuits measure
خَمْسِينَkhamsīna(is) fifty
أَلْفَalfathousand
سَنَةٍۢsanatinyear(s)

Translation

Ascend the Angels and the Spirit to Him in a Day [is] its measure (is) fifty thousand year(s)

Verse 5

فَٱصْبِرْfa-iṣ'birSo be patient
صَبْرًۭاṣabrana patience
جَمِيلًاjamīlangood

Translation

So be patient a patience good

Verse 6

إِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed, they
يَرَوْنَهُۥyarawnahusee it
بَعِيدًۭاbaʿīdan(as) far off

Translation

Indeed, they see it (as) far off

Verse 7

وَنَرَىٰهُwanarāhuBut We see it
قَرِيبًۭاqarībannear

Translation

But We see it near

Verse 8

يَوْمَyawma(The) Day
تَكُونُtakūnuwill be
ٱلسَّمَآءُl-samāuthe sky
كَٱلْمُهْلِkal-muh'lilike molten copper

Translation

(The) Day will be the sky like molten copper

Verse 9

وَتَكُونُwatakūnuAnd will be
ٱلْجِبَالُl-jibāluthe mountains
كَٱلْعِهْنِkal-ʿih'nilike wool

Translation

And will be the mountains like wool

Verse 10

وَلَاwalāAnd not
يَسْـَٔلُyasaluwill ask
حَمِيمٌḥamīmuna friend
حَمِيمًۭاḥamīman(about) a friend

Translation

And not will ask a friend (about) a friend

Verse 11

يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ ۚyubaṣṣarūnahumThey will be made to see each other
يَوَدُّyawadduWould wish
ٱلْمُجْرِمُl-muj'rimuthe criminal
لَوْlawif
يَفْتَدِىyaftadīhe (could be) ransomed
مِنْminfrom
عَذَابِʿadhābi(the) punishment
يَوْمِئِذٍۭyawmi-idhin(of) that Day
بِبَنِيهِbibanīhiby his children

Translation

They will be made to see each other Would wish the criminal if he (could be) ransomed from (the) punishment (of) that Day by his children

Verse 12

وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦwaṣāḥibatihiAnd his spouse
وَأَخِيهِwa-akhīhiand his brother

Translation

And his spouse and his brother

Verse 13

وَفَصِيلَتِهِwafaṣīlatihiAnd his nearest kindred
ٱلَّتِىallatīwho
تُـْٔوِيهِtu'wīhisheltered him

Translation

And his nearest kindred who sheltered him

Verse 14

وَمَنwamanAnd whoever
فِى(is) on
ٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earth
جَمِيعًۭاjamīʿanall
ثُمَّthummathen
يُنجِيهِyunjīhiit (could) save him

Translation

And whoever (is) on the earth all then it (could) save him

Verse 15

كَلَّآ ۖkallāBy no means
إِنَّهَاinnahāIndeed, it (is)
لَظَىٰlaẓāsurely a Flame of Hell

Translation

By no means Indeed, it (is) surely a Flame of Hell

Verse 16

نَزَّاعَةًۭnazzāʿatanA remover
لِّلشَّوَىٰlilshawāof the skin of the head

Translation

A remover of the skin of the head

Verse 17

تَدْعُوا۟tadʿūInviting
مَنْman(him) who
أَدْبَرَadbaraturned his back
وَتَوَلَّىٰwatawallāand went away

Translation

Inviting (him) who turned his back and went away

Verse 18

وَجَمَعَwajamaʿaAnd collected
فَأَوْعَىٰٓfa-awʿāand hoarded

Translation

And collected and hoarded

Verse 19

۞ إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَl-insānathe man
خُلِقَkhuliqawas created
هَلُوعًاhalūʿananxious

Translation

Indeed the man was created anxious

Verse 20

إِذَاidhāWhen
مَسَّهُmassahutouches him
ٱلشَّرُّl-sharuthe evil
جَزُوعًۭاjazūʿandistressed

Translation

When touches him the evil distressed

Verse 21

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
مَسَّهُmassahutouches him
ٱلْخَيْرُl-khayruthe good
مَنُوعًاmanūʿanwithholding

Translation

And when touches him the good withholding

Verse 22

إِلَّاillāExcept
ٱلْمُصَلِّينَl-muṣalīnathose who pray

Translation

Except those who pray

Verse 23

ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose who
هُمْhum[they]
عَلَىٰʿalāat
صَلَاتِهِمْṣalātihimtheir prayer
دَآئِمُونَdāimūna(are) constant

Translation

Those who [they] at their prayer (are) constant

Verse 24

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who
فِىٓin
أَمْوَٰلِهِمْamwālihimtheir wealth
حَقٌّۭḥaqqun(is) a right
مَّعْلُومٌۭmaʿlūmunknown

Translation

And those who in their wealth (is) a right known

Verse 25

لِّلسَّآئِلِlilssāiliFor the one who asks
وَٱلْمَحْرُومِwal-maḥrūmiand the deprived

Translation

For the one who asks and the deprived

Verse 26

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who
يُصَدِّقُونَyuṣaddiqūnaaccept (the) truth
بِيَوْمِbiyawmi(of the) Day
ٱلدِّينِl-dīni(of) the Judgment

Translation

And those who accept (the) truth (of the) Day (of) the Judgment

Verse 27

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who
هُمhum[they]
مِّنْminof
عَذَابِʿadhābi(the) punishment
رَبِّهِمrabbihim(of) their Lord
مُّشْفِقُونَmush'fiqūna(are) fearful

Translation

And those who [they] of (the) punishment (of) their Lord (are) fearful

Verse 28

إِنَّinnaIndeed
عَذَابَʿadhāba(the) punishment
رَبِّهِمْrabbihim(of) your Lord
غَيْرُghayru(is) not
مَأْمُونٍۢmamūninto be felt secure (of)

Translation

Indeed (the) punishment (of) your Lord (is) not to be felt secure (of)

Verse 29

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who
هُمْhum[they]
لِفُرُوجِهِمْlifurūjihimtheir modesty
حَـٰفِظُونَḥāfiẓūna(are) guardians

Translation

And those who [they] their modesty (are) guardians

Verse 30

إِلَّاillāExcept
عَلَىٰٓʿalāfrom
أَزْوَٰجِهِمْazwājihimtheir spouses
أَوْawor
مَاwhat
مَلَكَتْmalakatthey possess
أَيْمَـٰنُهُمْaymānuhumrightfully
فَإِنَّهُمْfa-innahumthen indeed, they
غَيْرُghayru(are) not
مَلُومِينَmalūmīnablameworthy

Translation

Except from their spouses or what they possess rightfully then indeed, they (are) not blameworthy

Verse 31

فَمَنِfamaniBut whoever
ٱبْتَغَىٰib'taghāseeks
وَرَآءَwarāabeyond
ذَٰلِكَdhālikathat
فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَfa-ulāikathen those
هُمُhumu[they]
ٱلْعَادُونَl-ʿādūna(are) the transgressors

Translation

But whoever seeks beyond that then those [they] (are) the transgressors

Verse 32

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who
هُمْhum[they]
لِأَمَـٰنَـٰتِهِمْli-amānātihimof their trusts
وَعَهْدِهِمْwaʿahdihimand their promise
رَٰعُونَrāʿūna(are) observers

Translation

And those who [they] of their trusts and their promise (are) observers

Verse 33

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who
هُمhum[they]
بِشَهَـٰدَٰتِهِمْbishahādātihimin their testimonies
قَآئِمُونَqāimūnastand firm

Translation

And those who [they] in their testimonies stand firm

Verse 34

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who
هُمْhum[they]
عَلَىٰʿalāon
صَلَاتِهِمْṣalātihimtheir prayer
يُحَافِظُونَyuḥāfiẓūnakeep a guard

Translation

And those who [they] on their prayer keep a guard

Verse 35

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThose
فِى(will be) in
جَنَّـٰتٍۢjannātinGardens
مُّكْرَمُونَmuk'ramūnahonored

Translation

Those (will be) in Gardens honored

Verse 36

فَمَالِfamāliSo what is with
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieve
قِبَلَكَqibalakabefore you
مُهْطِعِينَmuh'ṭiʿīna(they) hasten

Translation

So what is with those who disbelieve before you (they) hasten

Verse 37

عَنِʿaniOn
ٱلْيَمِينِl-yamīnithe right
وَعَنِwaʿaniand on
ٱلشِّمَالِl-shimālithe left
عِزِينَʿizīna(in) separate groups

Translation

On the right and on the left (in) separate groups

Verse 38

أَيَطْمَعُayaṭmaʿuDoes long
كُلُّkulluevery
ٱمْرِئٍۢim'ri-inperson
مِّنْهُمْmin'humamong them
أَنanthat
يُدْخَلَyud'khalahe enters
جَنَّةَjannataa Garden
نَعِيمٍۢnaʿīmin(of) Delight

Translation

Does long every person among them that he enters a Garden (of) Delight

Verse 39

كَلَّآ ۖkallāBy no means
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, We
خَلَقْنَـٰهُمkhalaqnāhum[We] have created them
مِّمَّاmimmāfrom what
يَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūnathey know

Translation

By no means Indeed, We [We] have created them from what they know

Verse 40

فَلَآfalāBut nay
أُقْسِمُuq'simuI swear
بِرَبِّbirabbiby (the) Lord
ٱلْمَشَـٰرِقِl-mashāriqi(of) the risings
وَٱلْمَغَـٰرِبِwal-maghāribiand the settings
إِنَّاinnāthat We
لَقَـٰدِرُونَlaqādirūna(are) surely Able

Translation

But nay I swear by (the) Lord (of) the risings and the settings that We (are) surely Able

Verse 41

عَلَىٰٓʿalā[On]
أَنanto
نُّبَدِّلَnubaddila[We] replace
خَيْرًۭاkhayran(with) better
مِّنْهُمْmin'humthan them
وَمَاwamāand not
نَحْنُnaḥnuWe
بِمَسْبُوقِينَbimasbūqīna(are) to be outrun

Translation

[On] to [We] replace (with) better than them and not We (are) to be outrun

Verse 42

فَذَرْهُمْfadharhumSo leave them
يَخُوضُوا۟yakhūḍū(to) converse vainly
وَيَلْعَبُوا۟wayalʿabūand amuse themselves
حَتَّىٰḥattāuntil
يُلَـٰقُوا۟yulāqūthey meet
يَوْمَهُمُyawmahumutheir Day
ٱلَّذِىalladhīwhich
يُوعَدُونَyūʿadūnathey are promised

Translation

So leave them (to) converse vainly and amuse themselves until they meet their Day which they are promised

Verse 43

يَوْمَyawma(The) Day
يَخْرُجُونَyakhrujūnathey will come out
مِنَminafrom
ٱلْأَجْدَاثِl-ajdāthithe graves
سِرَاعًۭاsirāʿanrapidly
كَأَنَّهُمْka-annahumas if they (were)
إِلَىٰilāto
نُصُبٍۢnuṣubina goal
يُوفِضُونَyūfiḍūnahastening

Translation

(The) Day they will come out from the graves rapidly as if they (were) to a goal hastening

Verse 44

خَـٰشِعَةًkhāshiʿatanHumbled
أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْabṣāruhumtheir eyesights
تَرْهَقُهُمْtarhaquhumwill cover them
ذِلَّةٌۭ ۚdhillatunhumiliation
ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat
ٱلْيَوْمُl-yawmu(is) the Day
ٱلَّذِىalladhīwhich
كَانُوا۟kānūthey were
يُوعَدُونَyūʿadūnapromised

Translation

Humbled their eyesights will cover them humiliation That (is) the Day which they were promised
