Chapter 71Meccan28 Verses

Verse 1

إِنَّآinnāIndeed, We
أَرْسَلْنَاarsalnā[We] sent
نُوحًاnūḥanNuh
إِلَىٰilāto
قَوْمِهِۦٓqawmihihis people
أَنْanthat
أَنذِرْandhirWarn
قَوْمَكَqawmakayour people
مِنminfrom
قَبْلِqablibefore
أَنan[that]
يَأْتِيَهُمْyatiyahumcomes to them
عَذَابٌʿadhābuna punishment
أَلِيمٌۭalīmunpainful

Translation

Indeed, We [We] sent Nuh to his people that Warn your people from before [that] comes to them a punishment painful

Verse 2

قَالَqālaHe said
يَـٰقَوْمِyāqawmiO my people
إِنِّىinnīIndeed, I am
لَكُمْlakumto you
نَذِيرٌۭnadhīruna warner
مُّبِينٌmubīnunclear

Translation

He said O my people Indeed, I am to you a warner clear

Verse 3

أَنِaniThat
ٱعْبُدُوا۟uʿ'budūWorship
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
وَٱتَّقُوهُwa-ittaqūhuand fear Him
وَأَطِيعُونِwa-aṭīʿūniand obey me

Translation

That Worship Allah and fear Him and obey me

Verse 4

يَغْفِرْyaghfirHe will forgive
لَكُمlakumfor you
مِّنmin[of]
ذُنُوبِكُمْdhunūbikumyour sins
وَيُؤَخِّرْكُمْwayu-akhir'kumand give you respite
إِلَىٰٓilāfor
أَجَلٍۢajalina term
مُّسَمًّى ۚmusammanspecified
إِنَّinnaIndeed
أَجَلَajala(the) term
ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
إِذَاidhāwhen
جَآءَjāait comes
لَاlānot
يُؤَخَّرُ ۖyu-akharuis delayed
لَوْlawif
كُنتُمْkuntumyou
تَعْلَمُونَtaʿlamūnaknow

Translation

He will forgive for you [of] your sins and give you respite for a term specified Indeed (the) term (of) Allah when it comes not is delayed if you know

Verse 5

قَالَqālaHe said
رَبِّrabbiMy Lord
إِنِّىinnīIndeed, I
دَعَوْتُdaʿawtuinvited
قَوْمِىqawmīmy people
لَيْلًۭاlaylannight
وَنَهَارًۭاwanahāranand day

Translation

He said My Lord Indeed, I invited my people night and day

Verse 6

فَلَمْfalamBut not
يَزِدْهُمْyazid'humincreased them
دُعَآءِىٓduʿāīmy invitation
إِلَّاillāexcept
فِرَارًۭاfirāran(in) flight

Translation

But not increased them my invitation except (in) flight

Verse 7

وَإِنِّىwa-innīAnd indeed, I
كُلَّمَاkullamāevery time
دَعَوْتُهُمْdaʿawtuhumI invited them
لِتَغْفِرَlitaghfirathat You may forgive
لَهُمْlahumthem
جَعَلُوٓا۟jaʿalūthey put
أَصَـٰبِعَهُمْaṣābiʿahumtheir fingers
فِىٓfīin
ءَاذَانِهِمْādhānihimtheir ears
وَٱسْتَغْشَوْا۟wa-is'taghshawand covered themselves
ثِيَابَهُمْthiyābahum(with) their garments
وَأَصَرُّوا۟wa-aṣarrūand persisted
وَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟wa-is'takbarūand were arrogant
ٱسْتِكْبَارًۭاis'tik'bāran(with) pride

Translation

And indeed, I every time I invited them that You may forgive them they put their fingers in their ears and covered themselves (with) their garments and persisted and were arrogant (with) pride

Verse 8

ثُمَّthummaThen
إِنِّىinnīindeed, I
دَعَوْتُهُمْdaʿawtuhuminvited them
جِهَارًۭاjihāranpublicly

Translation

Then indeed, I invited them publicly

Verse 9

ثُمَّthummaThen
إِنِّىٓinnīindeed, I
أَعْلَنتُaʿlantuannounced
لَهُمْlahumto them
وَأَسْرَرْتُwa-asrartuand I confided
لَهُمْlahumto them
إِسْرَارًۭاis'rāransecretly

Translation

Then indeed, I announced to them and I confided to them secretly

Verse 10

فَقُلْتُfaqul'tuThen I said
ٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟is'taghfirūAsk forgiveness
رَبَّكُمْrabbakum(from) your Lord
إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, He
كَانَkānais
غَفَّارًۭاghaffāranOft-Forgiving

Translation

Then I said Ask forgiveness (from) your Lord Indeed, He is Oft-Forgiving

Verse 11

يُرْسِلِyur'siliHe will send down
ٱلسَّمَآءَl-samāa(rain from) the sky
عَلَيْكُمʿalaykumupon you
مِّدْرَارًۭاmid'rāran(in) abundance

Translation

He will send down (rain from) the sky upon you (in) abundance

Verse 12

وَيُمْدِدْكُمwayum'did'kumAnd provide you
بِأَمْوَٰلٍۢbi-amwālinwith wealth
وَبَنِينَwabanīnaand children
وَيَجْعَلwayajʿaland make
لَّكُمْlakumfor you
جَنَّـٰتٍۢjannātingardens
وَيَجْعَلwayajʿaland make
لَّكُمْlakumfor you
أَنْهَـٰرًۭاanhāranrivers

Translation

And provide you with wealth and children and make for you gardens and make for you rivers

Verse 13

مَّاmāWhat
لَكُمْlakum(is) for you
لَاlānot
تَرْجُونَtarjūnayou attribute
لِلَّهِlillahito Allah
وَقَارًۭاwaqārangrandeur

Translation

What (is) for you not you attribute to Allah grandeur

Verse 14

وَقَدْwaqadAnd indeed
خَلَقَكُمْkhalaqakumHe created you
أَطْوَارًاaṭwāran(in) stages

Translation

And indeed He created you (in) stages

Verse 15

أَلَمْalamDo not
تَرَوْا۟tarawyou see
كَيْفَkayfahow
خَلَقَkhalaqadid create
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
سَبْعَsabʿa(the) seven
سَمَـٰوَٰتٍۢsamāwātinheavens
طِبَاقًۭاṭibāqan(in) layers

Translation

Do not you see how did create Allah (the) seven heavens (in) layers

Verse 16

وَجَعَلَwajaʿalaAnd made
ٱلْقَمَرَl-qamarathe moon
فِيهِنَّfīhinnatherein
نُورًۭاnūrana light
وَجَعَلَwajaʿalaand made
ٱلشَّمْسَl-shamsathe sun
سِرَاجًۭاsirājana lamp

Translation

And made the moon therein a light and made the sun a lamp

Verse 17

وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
أَنۢبَتَكُمanbatakumhas caused you to grow
مِّنَminafrom
ٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earth
نَبَاتًۭاnabātan(as) a growth

Translation

And Allah has caused you to grow from the earth (as) a growth

Verse 18

ثُمَّthummaThen
يُعِيدُكُمْyuʿīdukumHe will return you
فِيهَاfīhāinto it
وَيُخْرِجُكُمْwayukh'rijukumand bring you forth
إِخْرَاجًۭاikh'rājan(a new) bringing forth

Translation

Then He will return you into it and bring you forth (a new) bringing forth

Verse 19

وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
جَعَلَjaʿalamade
لَكُمُlakumufor you
ٱلْأَرْضَl-arḍathe earth
بِسَاطًۭاbisāṭanan expanse

Translation

And Allah made for you the earth an expanse

Verse 20

لِّتَسْلُكُوا۟litaslukūThat you may go along
مِنْهَاmin'hātherein
سُبُلًۭاsubulan(in) paths
فِجَاجًۭاfijājanwide

Translation

That you may go along therein (in) paths wide

Verse 21

قَالَqālaSaid
نُوحٌۭnūḥunNuh
رَّبِّrabbiMy Lord
إِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed, they
عَصَوْنِىʿaṣawnīdisobeyed me
وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟wa-ittabaʿūand followed
مَنman(the one) who
لَّمْlam(did) not
يَزِدْهُyazid'huincrease him
مَالُهُۥmāluhuhis wealth
وَوَلَدُهُۥٓwawaladuhuand his children
إِلَّاillāexcept
خَسَارًۭاkhasāran(in) loss

Translation

Said Nuh My Lord Indeed, they disobeyed me and followed (the one) who (did) not increase him his wealth and his children except (in) loss

Verse 22

وَمَكَرُوا۟wamakarūAnd they have planned
مَكْرًۭاmakrana plan
كُبَّارًۭاkubbārangreat

Translation

And they have planned a plan great

Verse 23

وَقَالُوا۟waqālūAnd they said
لَاlā(Do) not
تَذَرُنَّtadharunnaleave
ءَالِهَتَكُمْālihatakumyour gods
وَلَاwalāand (do) not
تَذَرُنَّtadharunnaleave
وَدًّۭاwaddanWadd
وَلَاwalāand not
سُوَاعًۭاsuwāʿanSuwa
وَلَاwalāand not
يَغُوثَyaghūthaYaguth
وَيَعُوقَwayaʿūqaand Yauq
وَنَسْرًۭاwanasranand Nasr

Translation

And they said (Do) not leave your gods and (do) not leave Wadd and not Suwa and not Yaguth and Yauq and Nasr

Verse 24

وَقَدْwaqadAnd indeed
أَضَلُّوا۟aḍallūthey have led astray
كَثِيرًۭا ۖkathīranmany
وَلَاwalāAnd not
تَزِدِtazidiincrease
ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَl-ẓālimīnathe wrongdoers
إِلَّاillāexcept
ضَلَـٰلًۭاḍalālan(in) error

Translation

And indeed they have led astray many And not increase the wrongdoers except (in) error

Verse 25

مِّمَّاmimmāBecause of
خَطِيٓـَٔـٰتِهِمْkhaṭīātihimtheir sins
أُغْرِقُوا۟ugh'riqūthey were drowned
فَأُدْخِلُوا۟fa-ud'khilūthen made to enter
نَارًۭاnāran(the) Fire
فَلَمْfalamand not
يَجِدُوا۟yajidūthey found
لَهُمlahumfor themselves
مِّنminfrom
دُونِdūnibesides
ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
أَنصَارًۭاanṣāranany helpers

Translation

Because of their sins they were drowned then made to enter (the) Fire and not they found for themselves from besides Allah any helpers

Verse 26

وَقَالَwaqālaAnd said
نُوحٌۭnūḥunNuh
رَّبِّrabbiMy Lord
لَاlā(Do) not
تَذَرْtadharleave
عَلَىʿalāon
ٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earth
مِنَminaany
ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَl-kāfirīna(of) the disbelievers
دَيَّارًاdayyāran(as) an inhabitant

Translation

And said Nuh My Lord (Do) not leave on the earth any (of) the disbelievers (as) an inhabitant

Verse 27

إِنَّكَinnakaIndeed, You
إِنinif
تَذَرْهُمْtadharhumYou leave them
يُضِلُّوا۟yuḍillūthey will mislead
عِبَادَكَʿibādakaYour slaves
وَلَاwalāand not
يَلِدُوٓا۟yalidūthey will beget
إِلَّاillāexcept
فَاجِرًۭاfājirana wicked
كَفَّارًۭاkaffārana disbeliever

Translation

Indeed, You if You leave them they will mislead Your slaves and not they will beget except a wicked a disbeliever

Verse 28

رَّبِّrabbiMy Lord
ٱغْفِرْigh'firForgive
لِىlīme
وَلِوَٰلِدَىَّwaliwālidayyaand my parents
وَلِمَنwalimanand whoever
دَخَلَdakhalaenters
بَيْتِىَbaytiyamy house
مُؤْمِنًۭاmu'minana believer
وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَwalil'mu'minīnaand the believing men
وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِwal-mu'minātiand the believing women
وَلَاwalāAnd (do) not
تَزِدِtazidiincrease
ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَl-ẓālimīnathe wrongdoers
إِلَّاillāexcept
تَبَارًۢاtabāran(in) destruction

Translation

My Lord Forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house a believer and the believing men and the believing women And (do) not increase the wrongdoers except (in) destruction
