Chapter 73Meccan20 Verses

Verse 1

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO you
ٱلْمُزَّمِّلُl-muzamiluwho wraps himself

Translation

O you who wraps himself

Verse 2

قُمِqumiStand
ٱلَّيْلَal-layla(in) the night
إِلَّاillāexcept
قَلِيلًۭاqalīlana little

Translation

Stand (in) the night except a little

Verse 3

نِّصْفَهُۥٓniṣ'fahuHalf of it
أَوِawior
ٱنقُصْunquṣlessen
مِنْهُmin'hufrom it
قَلِيلًاqalīlana little

Translation

Half of it or lessen from it a little

Verse 4

أَوْawOr
زِدْzidadd
عَلَيْهِʿalayhito it
وَرَتِّلِwarattiliand recite
ٱلْقُرْءَانَl-qur'ānathe Quran
تَرْتِيلًاtartīlan(with) measured rhythmic recitation

Translation

Or add to it and recite the Quran (with) measured rhythmic recitation

Verse 5

إِنَّاinnāIndeed, We
سَنُلْقِىsanul'qīwill cast
عَلَيْكَʿalaykaupon you
قَوْلًۭاqawlana Word
ثَقِيلًاthaqīlanheavy

Translation

Indeed, We will cast upon you a Word heavy

Verse 6

إِنَّinnaIndeed
نَاشِئَةَnāshi-ata(the) rising
ٱلَّيْلِal-layli(at) the night
هِىَhiyait
أَشَدُّashaddu(is) very hard
وَطْـًۭٔاwaṭanand most potent
وَأَقْوَمُwa-aqwamuand more suitable
قِيلًاqīlan(for) Word

Translation

Indeed (the) rising (at) the night it (is) very hard and most potent and more suitable (for) Word

Verse 7

إِنَّinnaIndeed
لَكَlakafor you
فِىfīin
ٱلنَّهَارِl-nahārithe day
سَبْحًۭاsabḥan(is) occupation
طَوِيلًۭاṭawīlanprolonged

Translation

Indeed for you in the day (is) occupation prolonged

Verse 8

وَٱذْكُرِwa-udh'kuriAnd remember
ٱسْمَis'ma(the) name
رَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lord
وَتَبَتَّلْwatabattaland devote yourself
إِلَيْهِilayhito Him
تَبْتِيلًۭاtabtīlan(with) devotion

Translation

And remember (the) name (of) your Lord and devote yourself to Him (with) devotion

Verse 9

رَّبُّrabbu(The) Lord
ٱلْمَشْرِقِl-mashriqi(of) the east
وَٱلْمَغْرِبِwal-maghribiand the west
لَآlā(there is) no
إِلَـٰهَilāhagod
إِلَّاillāexcept
هُوَhuwaHim
فَٱتَّخِذْهُfa-ittakhidh'huso take Him
وَكِيلًۭاwakīlan(as) Disposer of Affairs

Translation

(The) Lord (of) the east and the west (there is) no god except Him so take Him (as) Disposer of Affairs

Verse 10

وَٱصْبِرْwa-iṣ'birAnd be patient
عَلَىٰʿalāover
مَاmāwhat
يَقُولُونَyaqūlūnathey say
وَٱهْجُرْهُمْwa-uh'jur'humand avoid them
هَجْرًۭاhajranan avoidance
جَمِيلًۭاjamīlangracious

Translation

And be patient over what they say and avoid them an avoidance gracious

Verse 11

وَذَرْنِىwadharnīAnd leave Me
وَٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَwal-mukadhibīnaand the deniers
أُو۟لِىulīpossessors
ٱلنَّعْمَةِl-naʿmati(of) the ease
وَمَهِّلْهُمْwamahhil'humand allow them respite
قَلِيلًاqalīlana little

Translation

And leave Me and the deniers possessors (of) the ease and allow them respite a little

Verse 12

إِنَّinnaIndeed
لَدَيْنَآladaynāwith Us
أَنكَالًۭاankālan(are) shackles
وَجَحِيمًۭاwajaḥīmanand burning fire

Translation

Indeed with Us (are) shackles and burning fire

Verse 13

وَطَعَامًۭاwaṭaʿāmanAnd food
ذَاdhāthat
غُصَّةٍۢghuṣṣatinchokes
وَعَذَابًاwaʿadhābanand a punishment
أَلِيمًۭاalīmanpainful

Translation

And food that chokes and a punishment painful

Verse 14

يَوْمَyawma(On the) Day
تَرْجُفُtarjufuwill quake
ٱلْأَرْضُl-arḍuthe earth
وَٱلْجِبَالُwal-jibāluand the mountains
وَكَانَتِwakānatiand will become
ٱلْجِبَالُl-jibāluthe mountains
كَثِيبًۭاkathībana heap of sand
مَّهِيلًاmahīlanpouring down

Translation

(On the) Day will quake the earth and the mountains and will become the mountains a heap of sand pouring down

Verse 15

إِنَّآinnāIndeed, We
أَرْسَلْنَآarsalnā[We] have sent
إِلَيْكُمْilaykumto you
رَسُولًۭاrasūlana Messenger
شَـٰهِدًاshāhidan(as) a witness
عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykumupon you
كَمَآkamāas
أَرْسَلْنَآarsalnāWe sent
إِلَىٰilāto
فِرْعَوْنَfir'ʿawnaFiraun
رَسُولًۭاrasūlana Messenger

Translation

Indeed, We [We] have sent to you a Messenger (as) a witness upon you as We sent to Firaun a Messenger

Verse 16

فَعَصَىٰfaʿaṣāBut disobeyed
فِرْعَوْنُfir'ʿawnuFiraun
ٱلرَّسُولَl-rasūlathe Messenger
فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُfa-akhadhnāhuso We seized him
أَخْذًۭاakhdhan(with) a seizure
وَبِيلًۭاwabīlanruinous

Translation

But disobeyed Firaun the Messenger so We seized him (with) a seizure ruinous

Verse 17

فَكَيْفَfakayfaThen how
تَتَّقُونَtattaqūnawill you guard yourselves
إِنinif
كَفَرْتُمْkafartumyou disbelieve
يَوْمًۭاyawmana Day
يَجْعَلُyajʿalu(that) will make
ٱلْوِلْدَٰنَl-wil'dānathe children
شِيبًاshībangray-haired

Translation

Then how will you guard yourselves if you disbelieve a Day (that) will make the children gray-haired

Verse 18

ٱلسَّمَآءُal-samāuThe heaven
مُنفَطِرٌۢmunfaṭirun(will) break apart
بِهِۦ ۚbihitherefrom
كَانَkānais
وَعْدُهُۥwaʿduhuHis Promise
مَفْعُولًاmafʿūlanto be fulfilled

Translation

The heaven (will) break apart therefrom is His Promise to be fulfilled

Verse 19

إِنَّinnaIndeed
هَـٰذِهِۦhādhihithis
تَذْكِرَةٌۭ ۖtadhkiratun(is) a Reminder
فَمَنfamanthen whoever
شَآءَshāawills
ٱتَّخَذَittakhadha(let him) take
إِلَىٰilāto
رَبِّهِۦrabbihihis Lord
سَبِيلًاsabīlana way

Translation

Indeed this (is) a Reminder then whoever wills (let him) take to his Lord a way

Verse 20

۞ إِنَّinnaIndeed
رَبَّكَrabbakayour Lord
يَعْلَمُyaʿlamuknows
أَنَّكَannakathat you
تَقُومُtaqūmustand
أَدْنَىٰadnā(a little) less
مِنminthan
ثُلُثَىِthuluthayitwo-thirds
ٱلَّيْلِal-layli(of) the night
وَنِصْفَهُۥwaniṣ'fahuand half of it
وَثُلُثَهُۥwathuluthahuand a third of it
وَطَآئِفَةٌۭwaṭāifatunand (so do) a group
مِّنَminaof
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
مَعَكَ ۚmaʿaka(are) with you
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
يُقَدِّرُyuqaddirudetermines
ٱلَّيْلَal-laylathe night
وَٱلنَّهَارَ ۚwal-nahāraand the day
عَلِمَʿalimaHe knows
أَنanthat
لَّنlannot
تُحْصُوهُtuḥ'ṣūhuyou count it
فَتَابَfatābaso He has turned
عَلَيْكُمْ ۖʿalaykumto you
فَٱقْرَءُوا۟fa-iq'raūso recite
مَاmāwhat
تَيَسَّرَtayassarais easy
مِنَminaof
ٱلْقُرْءَانِ ۚl-qur'ānithe Quran
عَلِمَʿalimaHe knows
أَنanthat
سَيَكُونُsayakūnuthere will be
مِنكُمminkumamong you
مَّرْضَىٰ ۙmarḍāsick
وَءَاخَرُونَwaākharūnaand others
يَضْرِبُونَyaḍribūnatraveling
فِىfīin
ٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe land
يَبْتَغُونَyabtaghūnaseeking
مِنminof
فَضْلِfaḍli(the) Bounty
ٱللَّهِ ۙl-lahi(of) Allah
وَءَاخَرُونَwaākharūnaand others
يُقَـٰتِلُونَyuqātilūnafighting
فِىfīin
سَبِيلِsabīli(the) way
ٱللَّهِ ۖl-lahi(of) Allah
فَٱقْرَءُوا۟fa-iq'raūSo recite
مَاmāwhat
تَيَسَّرَtayassarais easy
مِنْهُ ۚmin'huof it
وَأَقِيمُوا۟wa-aqīmūand establish
ٱلصَّلَوٰةَl-ṣalatathe prayer
وَءَاتُوا۟waātūand give
ٱلزَّكَوٰةَl-zakatathe zakah
وَأَقْرِضُوا۟wa-aqriḍūand loan
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
قَرْضًاqarḍana loan
حَسَنًۭا ۚḥasanangoodly
وَمَاwamāAnd whatever
تُقَدِّمُوا۟tuqaddimūyou send forth
لِأَنفُسِكُمli-anfusikumfor yourselves
مِّنْminof
خَيْرٍۢkhayringood
تَجِدُوهُtajidūhuyou will find it
عِندَʿindawith
ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
هُوَhuwaIt
خَيْرًۭاkhayran(will be) better
وَأَعْظَمَwa-aʿẓamaand greater
أَجْرًۭا ۚajran(in) reward
وَٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟wa-is'taghfirūAnd seek forgiveness
ٱللَّهَ ۖl-laha(of) Allah
إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
غَفُورٌۭghafūrun(is) Oft-Forgiving
رَّحِيمٌۢraḥīmunMost Merciful

Translation

Indeed your Lord knows that you stand (a little) less than two-thirds (of) the night and half of it and a third of it and (so do) a group of those who (are) with you And Allah determines the night and the day He knows that not you count it so He has turned to you so recite what is easy of the Quran He knows that there will be among you sick and others traveling in the land seeking of (the) Bounty (of) Allah and others fighting in (the) way (of) Allah So recite what is easy of it and establish the prayer and give the zakah and loan Allah a loan goodly And whatever you send forth for yourselves of good you will find it with Allah It (will be) better and greater (in) reward And seek forgiveness (of) Allah Indeed Allah (is) Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful
