Chapter 74Meccan56 Verses

Verse 1

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO you
ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُl-mudathiruwho covers himself

Translation

O you who covers himself

Verse 2

قُمْqumStand up
فَأَنذِرْfa-andhirand warn

Translation

Stand up and warn

Verse 3

وَرَبَّكَwarabbakaAnd your Lord
فَكَبِّرْfakabbirmagnify

Translation

And your Lord magnify

Verse 4

وَثِيَابَكَwathiyābakaAnd your clothing
فَطَهِّرْfaṭahhirpurify

Translation

And your clothing purify

Verse 5

وَٱلرُّجْزَwal-ruj'zaAnd uncleanliness
فَٱهْجُرْfa-uh'juravoid

Translation

And uncleanliness avoid

Verse 6

وَلَاwalāAnd (do) not
تَمْنُنtamnunconfer favor
تَسْتَكْثِرُtastakthiru(to) acquire more

Translation

And (do) not confer favor (to) acquire more

Verse 7

وَلِرَبِّكَwalirabbikaAnd for your Lord
فَٱصْبِرْfa-iṣ'birbe patient

Translation

And for your Lord be patient

Verse 8

فَإِذَاfa-idhāThen when
نُقِرَnuqirais blown
فِىin
ٱلنَّاقُورِl-nāqūrithe trumpet

Translation

Then when is blown in the trumpet

Verse 9

فَذَٰلِكَfadhālikaThat
يَوْمَئِذٍۢyawma-idhinDay
يَوْمٌyawmun(will be) a Day
عَسِيرٌʿasīrundifficult

Translation

That Day (will be) a Day difficult

Verse 10

عَلَىʿalāFor
ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَl-kāfirīnathe disbelievers
غَيْرُghayrunot
يَسِيرٍۢyasīrineasy

Translation

For the disbelievers not easy

Verse 11

ذَرْنِىdharnīLeave Me
وَمَنْwamanand whom
خَلَقْتُkhalaqtuI created
وَحِيدًۭاwaḥīdanalone

Translation

Leave Me and whom I created alone

Verse 12

وَجَعَلْتُwajaʿaltuAnd I granted
لَهُۥlahuto him
مَالًۭاmālanwealth
مَّمْدُودًۭاmamdūdanextensive

Translation

And I granted to him wealth extensive

Verse 13

وَبَنِينَwabanīnaAnd children
شُهُودًۭاshuhūdanpresent

Translation

And children present

Verse 14

وَمَهَّدتُّwamahhadttuAnd I spread
لَهُۥlahufor him
تَمْهِيدًۭاtamhīdanease

Translation

And I spread for him ease

Verse 15

ثُمَّthummaThen
يَطْمَعُyaṭmaʿuhe desires
أَنْanthat
أَزِيدَazīdaI (should) add more

Translation

Then he desires that I (should) add more

Verse 16

كَلَّآ ۖkallāBy no means
إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, he
كَانَkānahas been
لِـَٔايَـٰتِنَاliāyātināto Our Verses
عَنِيدًۭاʿanīdanstubborn

Translation

By no means Indeed, he has been to Our Verses stubborn

Verse 17

سَأُرْهِقُهُۥsa-ur'hiquhuSoon I will cover Him
صَعُودًاṣaʿūdan(with) a laborious punishment

Translation

Soon I will cover Him (with) a laborious punishment

Verse 18

إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, he
فَكَّرَfakkarathought
وَقَدَّرَwaqaddaraand plotted

Translation

Indeed, he thought and plotted

Verse 19

فَقُتِلَfaqutilaSo may he be destroyed
كَيْفَkayfahow
قَدَّرَqaddarahe plotted

Translation

So may he be destroyed how he plotted

Verse 20

ثُمَّthummaThen
قُتِلَqutilamay he be destroyed
كَيْفَkayfahow
قَدَّرَqaddarahe plotted

Translation

Then may he be destroyed how he plotted

Verse 21

ثُمَّthummaThen
نَظَرَnaẓarahe looked

Translation

Then he looked

Verse 22

ثُمَّthummaThen
عَبَسَʿabasahe frowned
وَبَسَرَwabasaraand scowled

Translation

Then he frowned and scowled

Verse 23

ثُمَّthummaThen
أَدْبَرَadbarahe turned back
وَٱسْتَكْبَرَwa-is'takbaraand was proud

Translation

Then he turned back and was proud

Verse 24

فَقَالَfaqālaThen he said
إِنْinNot
هَـٰذَآhādhā(is) this
إِلَّاillābut
سِحْرٌۭsiḥ'runmagic
يُؤْثَرُyu'tharuimitated

Translation

Then he said Not (is) this but magic imitated

Verse 25

إِنْinNot
هَـٰذَآhādhā(is) this
إِلَّاillābut
قَوْلُqawlu(the) word
ٱلْبَشَرِl-bashari(of) a human being

Translation

Not (is) this but (the) word (of) a human being

Verse 26

سَأُصْلِيهِsa-uṣ'līhiSoon I will drive him
سَقَرَsaqara(into) Hell

Translation

Soon I will drive him (into) Hell

Verse 27

وَمَآwamāAnd what
أَدْرَىٰكَadrākacan make you know
مَاwhat
سَقَرُsaqaru(is) Hell

Translation

And what can make you know what (is) Hell

Verse 28

لَاNot
تُبْقِىtub'qīit lets remain
وَلَاwalāand not
تَذَرُtadharuit leaves

Translation

Not it lets remain and not it leaves

Verse 29

لَوَّاحَةٌۭlawwāḥatunScorching
لِّلْبَشَرِlil'basharithe human (skin)

Translation

Scorching the human (skin)

Verse 30

عَلَيْهَاʿalayhāOver it
تِسْعَةَtis'ʿata(are) nine
عَشَرَʿasharateen

Translation

Over it (are) nine teen

Verse 31

وَمَاwamāAnd not
جَعَلْنَآjaʿalnāWe have made
أَصْحَـٰبَaṣḥābakeepers
ٱلنَّارِl-nāri(of) the Fire
إِلَّاillāexcept
مَلَـٰٓئِكَةًۭ ۙmalāikatanAngels
وَمَاwamāAnd not
جَعَلْنَاjaʿalnāWe have made
عِدَّتَهُمْʿiddatahumtheir number
إِلَّاillāexcept
فِتْنَةًۭfit'natan(as) a trial
لِّلَّذِينَlilladhīnafor those who
كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieve
لِيَسْتَيْقِنَliyastayqinathat may be certain
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
أُوتُوا۟ūtūwere given
ٱلْكِتَـٰبَl-kitābathe Scripture
وَيَزْدَادَwayazdādaand may increase
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
ءَامَنُوٓا۟āmanūbelieve
إِيمَـٰنًۭا ۙīmānan(in) faith
وَلَاwalāand not
يَرْتَابَyartābamay doubt
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
أُوتُوا۟ūtūwere given
ٱلْكِتَـٰبَl-kitābathe Scripture
وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙwal-mu'minūnaand the believers
وَلِيَقُولَwaliyaqūlaand that may say
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose
فِىin
قُلُوبِهِمqulūbihimtheir hearts
مَّرَضٌۭmaraḍun(is) a disease
وَٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَwal-kāfirūnaand the disbelievers
مَاذَآmādhāWhat
أَرَادَarāda(does) intend
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
بِهَـٰذَاbihādhāby this
مَثَلًۭا ۚmathalanexample
كَذَٰلِكَkadhālikaThus
يُضِلُّyuḍilludoes let go astray
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
مَنmanwhom
يَشَآءُyashāuHe wills
وَيَهْدِىwayahdīand guides
مَنmanwhom
يَشَآءُ ۚyashāuHe wills
وَمَاwamāAnd none
يَعْلَمُyaʿlamuknows
جُنُودَjunūda(the) hosts
رَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lord
إِلَّاillāexcept
هُوَ ۚhuwaHim
وَمَاwamāAnd not
هِىَhiyait
إِلَّاillā(is) but
ذِكْرَىٰdhik'rāa reminder
لِلْبَشَرِlil'basharito (the) human beings

Translation

And not We have made keepers (of) the Fire except Angels And not We have made their number except (as) a trial for those who disbelieve that may be certain those who were given the Scripture and may increase those who believe (in) faith and not may doubt those who were given the Scripture and the believers and that may say those in their hearts (is) a disease and the disbelievers What (does) intend Allah by this example Thus does let go astray Allah whom He wills and guides whom He wills And none knows (the) hosts (of) your Lord except Him And not it (is) but a reminder to (the) human beings

Verse 32

كَلَّاkallāNay
وَٱلْقَمَرِwal-qamariBy the moon

Translation

Nay By the moon

Verse 33

وَٱلَّيْلِwa-al-layliAnd the night
إِذْidhwhen
أَدْبَرَadbarait departs

Translation

And the night when it departs

Verse 34

وَٱلصُّبْحِwal-ṣub'ḥiAnd the morning
إِذَآidhāwhen
أَسْفَرَasfarait brightens

Translation

And the morning when it brightens

Verse 35

إِنَّهَاinnahāIndeed, it
لَإِحْدَىla-iḥ'dā(is) surely one
ٱلْكُبَرِl-kubari(of) the greatest

Translation

Indeed, it (is) surely one (of) the greatest

Verse 36

نَذِيرًۭاnadhīranA warning
لِّلْبَشَرِlil'basharito (the) human being

Translation

A warning to (the) human being

Verse 37

لِمَنlimanTo whoever
شَآءَshāawills
مِنكُمْminkumamong you
أَنanto
يَتَقَدَّمَyataqaddamaproceed
أَوْawor
يَتَأَخَّرَyata-akharastay behind

Translation

To whoever wills among you to proceed or stay behind

Verse 38

كُلُّkulluEvery
نَفْسٍۭnafsinsoul
بِمَاbimāfor what
كَسَبَتْkasabatit has earned
رَهِينَةٌrahīnatun(is) pledged

Translation

Every soul for what it has earned (is) pledged

Verse 39

إِلَّآillāExcept
أَصْحَـٰبَaṣḥāba(the) companions
ٱلْيَمِينِl-yamīni(of) the right

Translation

Except (the) companions (of) the right

Verse 40

فِىIn
جَنَّـٰتٍۢjannātinGardens
يَتَسَآءَلُونَyatasāalūnaasking each other

Translation

In Gardens asking each other

Verse 41

عَنِʿaniAbout
ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَl-muj'rimīnathe criminals

Translation

About the criminals

Verse 42

مَاWhat
سَلَكَكُمْsalakakumled you
فِىinto
سَقَرَsaqaraHell

Translation

What led you into Hell

Verse 43

قَالُوا۟qālūThey will say
لَمْlamNot
نَكُnakuwe were
مِنَminaof
ٱلْمُصَلِّينَl-muṣalīnathose who prayed

Translation

They will say Not we were of those who prayed

Verse 44

وَلَمْwalamAnd not
نَكُnakuwe used to
نُطْعِمُnuṭ'ʿimufeed
ٱلْمِسْكِينَl-mis'kīnathe poor

Translation

And not we used to feed the poor

Verse 45

وَكُنَّاwakunnāAnd we used to
نَخُوضُnakhūḍuindulge in vain talk
مَعَmaʿawith
ٱلْخَآئِضِينَl-khāiḍīnathe vain talkers

Translation

And we used to indulge in vain talk with the vain talkers

Verse 46

وَكُنَّاwakunnāAnd we used to
نُكَذِّبُnukadhibudeny
بِيَوْمِbiyawmi(the) Day
ٱلدِّينِl-dīni(of) the Judgment

Translation

And we used to deny (the) Day (of) the Judgment

Verse 47

حَتَّىٰٓḥattāUntil
أَتَىٰنَاatānācame to us
ٱلْيَقِينُl-yaqīnuthe certainty

Translation

Until came to us the certainty

Verse 48

فَمَاfamāThen not
تَنفَعُهُمْtanfaʿuhumwill benefit them
شَفَـٰعَةُshafāʿatuintercession
ٱلشَّـٰفِعِينَl-shāfiʿīna(of) the intercessors

Translation

Then not will benefit them intercession (of) the intercessors

Verse 49

فَمَاfamāThen what
لَهُمْlahum(is) for them
عَنِʿani(that) from
ٱلتَّذْكِرَةِl-tadhkiratithe Reminder
مُعْرِضِينَmuʿ'riḍīnathey (are) turning away

Translation

Then what (is) for them (that) from the Reminder they (are) turning away

Verse 50

كَأَنَّهُمْka-annahumAs if they (were)
حُمُرٌۭḥumurundonkeys
مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌۭmus'tanfiratunfrightened

Translation

As if they (were) donkeys frightened

Verse 51

فَرَّتْfarratFleeing
مِنminfrom
قَسْوَرَةٍۭqaswaratina lion

Translation

Fleeing from a lion

Verse 52

بَلْbalNay
يُرِيدُyurīduDesires
كُلُّkulluevery
ٱمْرِئٍۢim'ri-inperson
مِّنْهُمْmin'humof them
أَنanthat
يُؤْتَىٰyu'tāhe may be given
صُحُفًۭاṣuḥufanpages
مُّنَشَّرَةًۭmunasharatanspread out

Translation

Nay Desires every person of them that he may be given pages spread out

Verse 53

كَلَّا ۖkallāNay
بَلbalBut
لَّاnot
يَخَافُونَyakhāfūnathey fear
ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَl-ākhiratathe Hereafter

Translation

Nay But not they fear the Hereafter

Verse 54

كَلَّآkallāNay
إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, it
تَذْكِرَةٌۭtadhkiratun(is) a Reminder

Translation

Nay Indeed, it (is) a Reminder

Verse 55

فَمَنfamanSo whoever
شَآءَshāawills
ذَكَرَهُۥdhakarahu(may) pay heed to it

Translation

So whoever wills (may) pay heed to it

Verse 56

وَمَاwamāAnd not
يَذْكُرُونَyadhkurūnawill pay heed
إِلَّآillāexcept
أَنanthat
يَشَآءَyashāawills
ٱللَّهُ ۚl-lahuAllah
هُوَhuwaHe
أَهْلُahlu(is) worthy
ٱلتَّقْوَىٰl-taqwāto be feared
وَأَهْلُwa-ahluand worthy
ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِl-maghfiratito forgive

Translation

And not will pay heed except that wills Allah He (is) worthy to be feared and worthy to forgive
