The Resurrection

Chapter 75Meccan40 Verses

Verse 1

لَآlāNay
أُقْسِمُuq'simuI swear
بِيَوْمِbiyawmiby (the) Day
ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِl-qiyāmati(of) the Resurrection

Translation

Nay I swear by (the) Day (of) the Resurrection

Verse 2

وَلَآwalāAnd nay
أُقْسِمُuq'simuI swear
بِٱلنَّفْسِbil-nafsiby the soul
ٱللَّوَّامَةِl-lawāmatiself-accusing

Translation

And nay I swear by the soul self-accusing

Verse 3

أَيَحْسَبُayaḥsabuDoes think
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُl-insānu[the] man
أَلَّنallanthat not
نَّجْمَعَnajmaʿaWe will assemble
عِظَامَهُۥʿiẓāmahuhis bones

Translation

Does think [the] man that not We will assemble his bones

Verse 4

بَلَىٰbalāNay
قَـٰدِرِينَqādirīna(We are) Able
عَلَىٰٓʿalāon
أَنanthat
نُّسَوِّىَnusawwiyaWe can restore
بَنَانَهُۥbanānahuhis fingertips

Translation

Nay (We are) Able on that We can restore his fingertips

Verse 5

بَلْbalNay
يُرِيدُyurīduDesires
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُl-insānu[the] man
لِيَفْجُرَliyafjurato give (the) lie
أَمَامَهُۥamāmahu(to) what is before him

Translation

Nay Desires [the] man to give (the) lie (to) what is before him

Verse 6

يَسْـَٔلُyasaluHe asks
أَيَّانَayyānaWhen
يَوْمُyawmu(is the) Day
ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِl-qiyāmati(of) the Resurrection

Translation

He asks When (is the) Day (of) the Resurrection

Verse 7

فَإِذَاfa-idhāSo when
بَرِقَbariqais dazzled
ٱلْبَصَرُl-baṣaruthe vision

Translation

So when is dazzled the vision

Verse 8

وَخَسَفَwakhasafaAnd becomes dark
ٱلْقَمَرُl-qamaruthe moon

Translation

And becomes dark the moon

Verse 9

وَجُمِعَwajumiʿaAnd are joined
ٱلشَّمْسُl-shamsuthe sun
وَٱلْقَمَرُwal-qamaruand the moon

Translation

And are joined the sun and the moon

Verse 10

يَقُولُyaqūluWill say
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُl-insānu[the] man
يَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat Day
أَيْنَaynaWhere
ٱلْمَفَرُّl-mafaru(is) the escape

Translation

Will say [the] man that Day Where (is) the escape

Verse 11

كَلَّاkallāBy no means
لَاlā(There is) no
وَزَرَwazararefuge

Translation

By no means (There is) no refuge

Verse 12

إِلَىٰilāTo
رَبِّكَrabbikayour Lord
يَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat Day
ٱلْمُسْتَقَرُّl-mus'taqaru(is) the place of rest

Translation

To your Lord that Day (is) the place of rest

Verse 13

يُنَبَّؤُا۟yunabba-uWill be informed
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُl-insānu[the] man
يَوْمَئِذٍۭyawma-idhinthat Day
بِمَاbimāof what
قَدَّمَqaddamahe sent forth
وَأَخَّرَwa-akharaand kept back

Translation

Will be informed [the] man that Day of what he sent forth and kept back

Verse 14

بَلِbaliNay
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُl-insānu[The] man
عَلَىٰʿalāagainst
نَفْسِهِۦnafsihihimself
بَصِيرَةٌۭbaṣīratun(will be) a witness

Translation

Nay [The] man against himself (will be) a witness

Verse 15

وَلَوْwalawEven if
أَلْقَىٰalqāhe presents
مَعَاذِيرَهُۥmaʿādhīrahuhis excuses

Translation

Even if he presents his excuses

Verse 16

لَاlāNot
تُحَرِّكْtuḥarrikmove
بِهِۦbihiwith it
لِسَانَكَlisānakayour tongue
لِتَعْجَلَlitaʿjalato hasten
بِهِۦٓbihiwith it

Translation

Not move with it your tongue to hasten with it

Verse 17

إِنَّinnaIndeed
عَلَيْنَاʿalaynāupon Us
جَمْعَهُۥjamʿahu(is) its collection
وَقُرْءَانَهُۥwaqur'ānahuand its recitation

Translation

Indeed upon Us (is) its collection and its recitation

Verse 18

فَإِذَاfa-idhāAnd when
قَرَأْنَـٰهُqaranāhuWe have recited it
فَٱتَّبِعْfa-ittabiʿthen follow
قُرْءَانَهُۥqur'ānahuits recitation

Translation

And when We have recited it then follow its recitation

Verse 19

ثُمَّthummaThen
إِنَّinnaindeed
عَلَيْنَاʿalaynāupon Us
بَيَانَهُۥbayānahu(is) its explanation

Translation

Then indeed upon Us (is) its explanation

Verse 20

كَلَّاkallāNo
بَلْbalBut
تُحِبُّونَtuḥibbūnayou love
ٱلْعَاجِلَةَl-ʿājilatathe immediate

Translation

No But you love the immediate

Verse 21

وَتَذَرُونَwatadharūnaAnd leave
ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَl-ākhiratathe Hereafter

Translation

And leave the Hereafter

Verse 22

وُجُوهٌۭwujūhunFaces
يَوْمَئِذٍۢyawma-idhinthat Day
نَّاضِرَةٌnāḍiratun(will be) radiant

Translation

Faces that Day (will be) radiant

Verse 23

إِلَىٰilāTowards
رَبِّهَاrabbihātheir Lord
نَاظِرَةٌۭnāẓiratunlooking

Translation

Towards their Lord looking

Verse 24

وَوُجُوهٌۭwawujūhunAnd faces
يَوْمَئِذٍۭyawma-idhinthat Day
بَاسِرَةٌۭbāsiratun(will be) distorted

Translation

And faces that Day (will be) distorted

Verse 25

تَظُنُّtaẓunnuThinking
أَنanthat
يُفْعَلَyuf'ʿalawill be done
بِهَاbihāto them
فَاقِرَةٌۭfāqiratunbackbreaking

Translation

Thinking that will be done to them backbreaking

Verse 26

كَلَّآkallāNo
إِذَاidhāWhen
بَلَغَتِbalaghatiit reaches
ٱلتَّرَاقِىَl-tarāqiyathe collar bones

Translation

No When it reaches the collar bones

Verse 27

وَقِيلَwaqīlaAnd it is said
مَنْ ۜmanWho
رَاقٍۢrāqin(will) cure

Translation

And it is said Who (will) cure

Verse 28

وَظَنَّwaẓannaAnd he is certain
أَنَّهُannahuthat it
ٱلْفِرَاقُl-firāqu(is) the parting

Translation

And he is certain that it (is) the parting

Verse 29

وَٱلْتَفَّتِwal-tafatiAnd is wound
ٱلسَّاقُl-sāquthe leg
بِٱلسَّاقِbil-sāqiabout the leg

Translation

And is wound the leg about the leg

Verse 30

إِلَىٰilāTo
رَبِّكَrabbikayour Lord
يَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat Day
ٱلْمَسَاقُl-masāqu(will be) the driving

Translation

To your Lord that Day (will be) the driving

Verse 31

فَلَاfalāAnd not
صَدَّقَṣaddaqahe accepted (the) truth
وَلَاwalāand not
صَلَّىٰṣallāhe prayed

Translation

And not he accepted (the) truth and not he prayed

Verse 32

وَلَـٰكِنwalākinBut
كَذَّبَkadhabahe denied
وَتَوَلَّىٰwatawallāand turned away

Translation

But he denied and turned away

Verse 33

ثُمَّthummaThen
ذَهَبَdhahabahe went
إِلَىٰٓilāto
أَهْلِهِۦahlihihis family
يَتَمَطَّىٰٓyatamaṭṭāswaggering

Translation

Then he went to his family swaggering

Verse 34

أَوْلَىٰawlāWoe
لَكَlakato you
فَأَوْلَىٰfa-awlāand woe

Translation

Woe to you and woe

Verse 35

ثُمَّthummaThen
أَوْلَىٰawlāwoe
لَكَlakato you
فَأَوْلَىٰٓfa-awlāand woe

Translation

Then woe to you and woe

Verse 36

أَيَحْسَبُayaḥsabuDoes think
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُl-insānuman
أَنanthat
يُتْرَكَyut'rakahe will be left
سُدًىsudanneglected

Translation

Does think man that he will be left neglected

Verse 37

أَلَمْalamWas not
يَكُyakuhe
نُطْفَةًۭnuṭ'fatana semen-drop
مِّنminof
مَّنِىٍّۢmaniyyinsemen
يُمْنَىٰyum'nāemitted

Translation

Was not he a semen-drop of semen emitted

Verse 38

ثُمَّthummaThen
كَانَkānahe was
عَلَقَةًۭʿalaqatana clinging substance
فَخَلَقَfakhalaqathen He created
فَسَوَّىٰfasawwāand proportioned

Translation

Then he was a clinging substance then He created and proportioned

Verse 39

فَجَعَلَfajaʿalaThen made
مِنْهُmin'huof him
ٱلزَّوْجَيْنِl-zawjaynitwo kinds
ٱلذَّكَرَl-dhakara(the) male
وَٱلْأُنثَىٰٓwal-unthāand the female

Translation

Then made of him two kinds (the) male and the female

Verse 40

أَلَيْسَalaysaIs not
ذَٰلِكَdhālika[that]
بِقَـٰدِرٍbiqādirin(He) Able
عَلَىٰٓʿalā[over]
أَنanto
يُحْـِۧىَyuḥ'yiyagive life
ٱلْمَوْتَىٰl-mawtā(to) the dead

Translation

Is not [that] (He) Able [over] to give life (to) the dead
