Chapter 78Meccan40 Verses

Verse 1

عَمَّʿammaAbout what
يَتَسَآءَلُونَyatasāalūnaare they asking one another

Translation

About what are they asking one another

Verse 2

عَنِʿaniAbout
ٱلنَّبَإِl-naba-ithe News
ٱلْعَظِيمِl-ʿaẓīmithe Great

Translation

About the News the Great

Verse 3

ٱلَّذِىalladhī(About) which
هُمْhumthey
فِيهِfīhi(are) concerning it
مُخْتَلِفُونَmukh'talifūna(in) disagreement

Translation

(About) which they (are) concerning it (in) disagreement

Verse 4

كَلَّاkallāNay
سَيَعْلَمُونَsayaʿlamūna(soon) they will know

Translation

Nay (soon) they will know

Verse 5

ثُمَّthummaThen
كَلَّاkallāNay
سَيَعْلَمُونَsayaʿlamūna(soon) they will know

Translation

Then Nay (soon) they will know

Verse 6

أَلَمْalamHave not
نَجْعَلِnajʿaliWe made
ٱلْأَرْضَl-arḍathe earth
مِهَـٰدًۭاmihādana resting place

Translation

Have not We made the earth a resting place

Verse 7

وَٱلْجِبَالَwal-jibālaAnd the mountains
أَوْتَادًۭاawtādan(as) pegs

Translation

And the mountains (as) pegs

Verse 8

وَخَلَقْنَـٰكُمْwakhalaqnākumAnd We created you
أَزْوَٰجًۭاazwājan(in) pairs

Translation

And We created you (in) pairs

Verse 9

وَجَعَلْنَاwajaʿalnāAnd We made
نَوْمَكُمْnawmakumyour sleep
سُبَاتًۭاsubātan(for) rest

Translation

And We made your sleep (for) rest

Verse 10

وَجَعَلْنَاwajaʿalnāAnd We made
ٱلَّيْلَal-laylathe night
لِبَاسًۭاlibāsan(as) covering

Translation

And We made the night (as) covering

Verse 11

وَجَعَلْنَاwajaʿalnāAnd We made
ٱلنَّهَارَl-nahārathe day
مَعَاشًۭاmaʿāshan(for) livelihood

Translation

And We made the day (for) livelihood

Verse 12

وَبَنَيْنَاwabanaynāAnd We constructed
فَوْقَكُمْfawqakumover you
سَبْعًۭاsabʿanseven
شِدَادًۭاshidādanstrong

Translation

And We constructed over you seven strong

Verse 13

وَجَعَلْنَاwajaʿalnāAnd We placed
سِرَاجًۭاsirājana lamp
وَهَّاجًۭاwahhājanburning

Translation

And We placed a lamp burning

Verse 14

وَأَنزَلْنَاwa-anzalnāAnd We sent down
مِنَminafrom
ٱلْمُعْصِرَٰتِl-muʿ'ṣirātithe rain clouds
مَآءًۭmāanwater
ثَجَّاجًۭاthajjājanpouring abundantly

Translation

And We sent down from the rain clouds water pouring abundantly

Verse 15

لِّنُخْرِجَlinukh'rijaThat We may bring forth
بِهِۦbihithereby
حَبًّۭاḥabbangrain
وَنَبَاتًۭاwanabātanand vegetation

Translation

That We may bring forth thereby grain and vegetation

Verse 16

وَجَنَّـٰتٍwajannātinAnd gardens
أَلْفَافًاalfāfan(of) thick foliage

Translation

And gardens (of) thick foliage

Verse 17

إِنَّinnaIndeed
يَوْمَyawma(the) Day
ٱلْفَصْلِl-faṣli(of) the Judgment
كَانَkānais
مِيقَـٰتًۭاmīqātanan appointed time

Translation

Indeed (the) Day (of) the Judgment is an appointed time

Verse 18

يَوْمَyawma(The) Day
يُنفَخُyunfakhu(in which) shall be blown
فِىin
ٱلصُّورِl-ṣūrithe trumpet
فَتَأْتُونَfatatūnaand you will come forth
أَفْوَاجًۭاafwājan(in) crowds

Translation

(The) Day (in which) shall be blown in the trumpet and you will come forth (in) crowds

Verse 19

وَفُتِحَتِwafutiḥatiAnd is opened
ٱلسَّمَآءُl-samāuthe heaven
فَكَانَتْfakānatand becomes
أَبْوَٰبًۭاabwābangateways

Translation

And is opened the heaven and becomes gateways

Verse 20

وَسُيِّرَتِwasuyyiratiAnd are moved
ٱلْجِبَالُl-jibāluthe mountains
فَكَانَتْfakānatand become
سَرَابًاsarābana mirage

Translation

And are moved the mountains and become a mirage

Verse 21

إِنَّinnaIndeed
جَهَنَّمَjahannamaHell
كَانَتْkānatis
مِرْصَادًۭاmir'ṣādanlying in wait

Translation

Indeed Hell is lying in wait

Verse 22

لِّلطَّـٰغِينَlilṭṭāghīnaFor the transgressors
مَـَٔابًۭاmaābana place of return

Translation

For the transgressors a place of return

Verse 23

لَّـٰبِثِينَlābithīna(They will) be remaining
فِيهَآfīhātherein
أَحْقَابًۭاaḥqāban(for) ages

Translation

(They will) be remaining therein (for) ages

Verse 24

لَّاNot
يَذُوقُونَyadhūqūnathey will taste
فِيهَاfīhātherein
بَرْدًۭاbardancoolness
وَلَاwalāand not
شَرَابًاsharābanany drink

Translation

Not they will taste therein coolness and not any drink

Verse 25

إِلَّاillāExcept
حَمِيمًۭاḥamīmanscalding water
وَغَسَّاقًۭاwaghassāqanand purulence

Translation

Except scalding water and purulence

Verse 26

جَزَآءًۭjazāanA recompense
وِفَاقًاwifāqanappropriate

Translation

A recompense appropriate

Verse 27

إِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed, they
كَانُوا۟kānūwere
لَاnot
يَرْجُونَyarjūnaexpecting
حِسَابًۭاḥisābanan account

Translation

Indeed, they were not expecting an account

Verse 28

وَكَذَّبُوا۟wakadhabūAnd they denied
بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَاbiāyātināOur Signs
كِذَّابًۭاkidhāban(with) denial

Translation

And they denied Our Signs (with) denial

Verse 29

وَكُلَّwakullaAnd every
شَىْءٍshayinthing
أَحْصَيْنَـٰهُaḥṣaynāhuWe have enumerated it
كِتَـٰبًۭاkitāban(in) a Book

Translation

And every thing We have enumerated it (in) a Book

Verse 30

فَذُوقُوا۟fadhūqūSo taste
فَلَنfalanand never
نَّزِيدَكُمْnazīdakumWe will increase you
إِلَّاillāexcept
عَذَابًاʿadhāban(in) punishment

Translation

So taste and never We will increase you except (in) punishment

Verse 31

إِنَّinnaIndeed
لِلْمُتَّقِينَlil'muttaqīnafor the righteous
مَفَازًاmafāzan(is) success

Translation

Indeed for the righteous (is) success

Verse 32

حَدَآئِقَḥadāiqaGardens
وَأَعْنَـٰبًۭاwa-aʿnābanand grapevines

Translation

Gardens and grapevines

Verse 33

وَكَوَاعِبَwakawāʿibaAnd splendid companions
أَتْرَابًۭاatrābanwell-matched

Translation

And splendid companions well-matched

Verse 34

وَكَأْسًۭاwakasanAnd a cup
دِهَاقًۭاdihāqanfull

Translation

And a cup full

Verse 35

لَّاNot
يَسْمَعُونَyasmaʿūnathey will hear
فِيهَاfīhātherein
لَغْوًۭاlaghwanany vain talk
وَلَاwalāand not
كِذَّٰبًۭاkidhābanany falsehood

Translation

Not they will hear therein any vain talk and not any falsehood

Verse 36

جَزَآءًۭjazāan(As) a reward
مِّنminfrom
رَّبِّكَrabbikayour Lord
عَطَآءًʿaṭāana gift
حِسَابًۭاḥisāban(according to) account

Translation

(As) a reward from your Lord a gift (according to) account

Verse 37

رَّبِّrabbiLord
ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwāti(of) the heavens
وَٱلْأَرْضِwal-arḍiand the earth
وَمَاwamāand whatever
بَيْنَهُمَاbaynahumā(is) between both of them
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ۖl-raḥmānithe Most Gracious
لَاnot
يَمْلِكُونَyamlikūnathey have power
مِنْهُmin'hufrom Him
خِطَابًۭاkhiṭāban(to) address

Translation

Lord (of) the heavens and the earth and whatever (is) between both of them the Most Gracious not they have power from Him (to) address

Verse 38

يَوْمَyawma(The) Day
يَقُومُyaqūmuwill stand
ٱلرُّوحُl-rūḥuthe Spirit
وَٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُwal-malāikatuand the Angels
صَفًّۭا ۖṣaffan(in) rows
لَّاnot
يَتَكَلَّمُونَyatakallamūnathey will speak
إِلَّاillāexcept
مَنْman(one) who
أَذِنَadhinapermits
لَهُlahu[for] him
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُl-raḥmānuthe Most Gracious
وَقَالَwaqālaand he (will) say
صَوَابًۭاṣawāban(what is) correct

Translation

(The) Day will stand the Spirit and the Angels (in) rows not they will speak except (one) who permits [for] him the Most Gracious and he (will) say (what is) correct

Verse 39

ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat
ٱلْيَوْمُl-yawmu(is) the Day
ٱلْحَقُّ ۖl-ḥaquthe True
فَمَنfamanSo whoever
شَآءَshāawills
ٱتَّخَذَittakhadhalet him take
إِلَىٰilātowards
رَبِّهِۦrabbihihis Lord
مَـَٔابًاmaābana return

Translation

That (is) the Day the True So whoever wills let him take towards his Lord a return

Verse 40

إِنَّآinnāIndeed We
أَنذَرْنَـٰكُمْandharnākum[We] have warned you
عَذَابًۭاʿadhāban(of) a punishment
قَرِيبًۭاqarībannear
يَوْمَyawma(the) Day
يَنظُرُyanẓuruwill see
ٱلْمَرْءُl-maruthe man
مَاwhat
قَدَّمَتْqaddamathave sent forth
يَدَاهُyadāhuhis hands
وَيَقُولُwayaqūluand will say
ٱلْكَافِرُl-kāfiruthe disbeliever
يَـٰلَيْتَنِىyālaytanīO I wish
كُنتُkuntuI were
تُرَٰبًۢاturābandust

Translation

Indeed We [We] have warned you (of) a punishment near (the) Day will see the man what have sent forth his hands and will say the disbeliever O I wish I were dust
