Those who drag forth

Chapter 79Meccan46 Verses

Verse 1

وَٱلنَّـٰزِعَـٰتِwal-nāziʿātiBy those who extract
غَرْقًۭاgharqanviolently

Translation

By those who extract violently

Verse 2

وَٱلنَّـٰشِطَـٰتِwal-nāshiṭātiAnd those who draw out
نَشْطًۭاnashṭangently

Translation

And those who draw out gently

Verse 3

وَٱلسَّـٰبِحَـٰتِwal-sābiḥātiAnd those who glide
سَبْحًۭاsabḥanswimming

Translation

And those who glide swimming

Verse 4

فَٱلسَّـٰبِقَـٰتِfal-sābiqātiAnd those who race each other
سَبْقًۭاsabqan(in) a race

Translation

And those who race each other (in) a race

Verse 5

فَٱلْمُدَبِّرَٰتِfal-mudabirātiAnd those who arrange
أَمْرًۭاamran(the) matter

Translation

And those who arrange (the) matter

Verse 6

يَوْمَyawma(The) Day
تَرْجُفُtarjufuwill quake
ٱلرَّاجِفَةُl-rājifatuthe quaking one

Translation

(The) Day will quake the quaking one

Verse 7

تَتْبَعُهَاtatbaʿuhāFollows it
ٱلرَّادِفَةُl-rādifatuthe subsequent

Translation

Follows it the subsequent

Verse 8

قُلُوبٌۭqulūbunHearts
يَوْمَئِذٍۢyawma-idhinthat Day
وَاجِفَةٌwājifatunwill palpitate

Translation

Hearts that Day will palpitate

Verse 9

أَبْصَـٰرُهَاabṣāruhāTheir eyes
خَـٰشِعَةٌۭkhāshiʿatunhumbled

Translation

Their eyes humbled

Verse 10

يَقُولُونَyaqūlūnaThey say
أَءِنَّاa-innāWill we
لَمَرْدُودُونَlamardūdūnaindeed be returned
فِىto
ٱلْحَافِرَةِl-ḥāfiratithe former state

Translation

They say Will we indeed be returned to the former state

Verse 11

أَءِذَاa-idhāWhat! When
كُنَّاkunnāwe are
عِظَـٰمًۭاʿiẓāmanbones
نَّخِرَةًۭnakhiratandecayed

Translation

What! When we are bones decayed

Verse 12

قَالُوا۟qālūThey say
تِلْكَtil'kaThis
إِذًۭاidhanthen
كَرَّةٌkarratun(would be) a return
خَاسِرَةٌۭkhāsiratunlosing

Translation

They say This then (would be) a return losing

Verse 13

فَإِنَّمَاfa-innamāThen only
هِىَhiyait
زَجْرَةٌۭzajratun(will be) a shout
وَٰحِدَةٌۭwāḥidatunsingle

Translation

Then only it (will be) a shout single

Verse 14

فَإِذَاfa-idhāAnd behold
هُمhumThey
بِٱلسَّاهِرَةِbil-sāhirati(will be) awakened

Translation

And behold They (will be) awakened

Verse 15

هَلْhalHas
أَتَىٰكَatāka(there) come to you
حَدِيثُḥadīthu(the) story
مُوسَىٰٓmūsā(of) Musa

Translation

Has (there) come to you (the) story (of) Musa

Verse 16

إِذْidhWhen
نَادَىٰهُnādāhucalled him
رَبُّهُۥrabbuhuhis Lord
بِٱلْوَادِbil-wādiin the valley
ٱلْمُقَدَّسِl-muqadasithe sacred
طُوًىṭuwan(of) Tuwa

Translation

When called him his Lord in the valley the sacred (of) Tuwa

Verse 17

ٱذْهَبْidh'habGo
إِلَىٰilāto
فِرْعَوْنَfir'ʿawnaFiraun
إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, he
طَغَىٰṭaghā(has) transgressed

Translation

Go to Firaun Indeed, he (has) transgressed

Verse 18

فَقُلْfaqulAnd say
هَلhalWould
لَّكَlaka[for] you
إِلَىٰٓilā[to]
أَنan[that]
تَزَكَّىٰtazakkāpurify yourself

Translation

And say Would [for] you [to] [that] purify yourself

Verse 19

وَأَهْدِيَكَwa-ahdiyakaAnd I will guide you
إِلَىٰilāto
رَبِّكَrabbikayour Lord
فَتَخْشَىٰfatakhshāso you would fear

Translation

And I will guide you to your Lord so you would fear

Verse 20

فَأَرَىٰهُfa-arāhuThen he showed him
ٱلْـَٔايَةَl-āyatathe sign
ٱلْكُبْرَىٰl-kub'rāthe great

Translation

Then he showed him the sign the great

Verse 21

فَكَذَّبَfakadhabaBut he denied
وَعَصَىٰwaʿaṣāand disobeyed

Translation

But he denied and disobeyed

Verse 22

ثُمَّthummaThen
أَدْبَرَadbarahe turned his back
يَسْعَىٰyasʿāstriving

Translation

Then he turned his back striving

Verse 23

فَحَشَرَfaḥasharaAnd he gathered
فَنَادَىٰfanādāand called out

Translation

And he gathered and called out

Verse 24

فَقَالَfaqālaThen he said
أَنَا۠anāI am
رَبُّكُمُrabbukumuyour Lord
ٱلْأَعْلَىٰl-aʿlāthe Most High

Translation

Then he said I am your Lord the Most High

Verse 25

فَأَخَذَهُfa-akhadhahuSo seized him
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
نَكَالَnakāla(with) an exemplary punishment
ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِl-ākhirati(for) the last
وَٱلْأُولَىٰٓwal-ūlāand the first

Translation

So seized him Allah (with) an exemplary punishment (for) the last and the first

Verse 26

إِنَّinnaIndeed
فِىin
ذَٰلِكَdhālikathat
لَعِبْرَةًۭlaʿib'ratansurely (is) a lesson
لِّمَنlimanfor whoever
يَخْشَىٰٓyakhshāfears

Translation

Indeed in that surely (is) a lesson for whoever fears

Verse 27

ءَأَنتُمْa-antumAre you
أَشَدُّashaddua more difficult
خَلْقًاkhalqancreation
أَمِamior
ٱلسَّمَآءُ ۚl-samāuthe heaven
بَنَىٰهَاbanāhāHe constructed it

Translation

Are you a more difficult creation or the heaven He constructed it

Verse 28

رَفَعَrafaʿaHe raised
سَمْكَهَاsamkahāits ceiling
فَسَوَّىٰهَاfasawwāhāand proportioned it

Translation

He raised its ceiling and proportioned it

Verse 29

وَأَغْطَشَwa-aghṭashaAnd He darkened
لَيْلَهَاlaylahāits night
وَأَخْرَجَwa-akhrajaand brought out
ضُحَىٰهَاḍuḥāhāits brightness

Translation

And He darkened its night and brought out its brightness

Verse 30

وَٱلْأَرْضَwal-arḍaAnd the earth
بَعْدَbaʿdaafter
ذَٰلِكَdhālikathat
دَحَىٰهَآdaḥāhāHe spread it

Translation

And the earth after that He spread it

Verse 31

أَخْرَجَakhrajaHe brought forth
مِنْهَاmin'hāfrom it
مَآءَهَاmāahāits water
وَمَرْعَىٰهَاwamarʿāhāand its pasture

Translation

He brought forth from it its water and its pasture

Verse 32

وَٱلْجِبَالَwal-jibālaAnd the mountains
أَرْسَىٰهَاarsāhāHe made them firm

Translation

And the mountains He made them firm

Verse 33

مَتَـٰعًۭاmatāʿan(As) a provision
لَّكُمْlakumfor you
وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْwali-anʿāmikumand for your cattle

Translation

(As) a provision for you and for your cattle

Verse 34

فَإِذَاfa-idhāBut when
جَآءَتِjāaticomes
ٱلطَّآمَّةُl-ṭāmatuthe Overwhelming Calamity
ٱلْكُبْرَىٰl-kub'rāthe great

Translation

But when comes the Overwhelming Calamity the great

Verse 35

يَوْمَyawma(The) Day
يَتَذَكَّرُyatadhakkaruwill remember
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُl-insānuman
مَاwhat
سَعَىٰsaʿāhe strove (for)

Translation

(The) Day will remember man what he strove (for)

Verse 36

وَبُرِّزَتِwaburrizatiAnd will be made manifest
ٱلْجَحِيمُl-jaḥīmuthe Hellfire
لِمَنlimanto (him) who
يَرَىٰyarāsees

Translation

And will be made manifest the Hellfire to (him) who sees

Verse 37

فَأَمَّاfa-ammāThen as for
مَنman(him) who
طَغَىٰṭaghātransgressed

Translation

Then as for (him) who transgressed

Verse 38

وَءَاثَرَwaātharaAnd preferred
ٱلْحَيَوٰةَl-ḥayatathe life
ٱلدُّنْيَاl-dun'yā(of) the world

Translation

And preferred the life (of) the world

Verse 39

فَإِنَّfa-innaThen indeed
ٱلْجَحِيمَl-jaḥīmathe Hellfire
هِىَhiyait
ٱلْمَأْوَىٰl-mawā(is) the refuge

Translation

Then indeed the Hellfire it (is) the refuge

Verse 40

وَأَمَّاwa-ammāBut as for
مَنْman(him) who
خَافَkhāfafeared
مَقَامَmaqāmastanding
رَبِّهِۦrabbihi(before) his Lord
وَنَهَىwanahāand restrained
ٱلنَّفْسَl-nafsahis soul
عَنِʿanifrom
ٱلْهَوَىٰl-hawāthe vain desires

Translation

But as for (him) who feared standing (before) his Lord and restrained his soul from the vain desires

Verse 41

فَإِنَّfa-innaThen indeed
ٱلْجَنَّةَl-janataParadise
هِىَhiyait (is)
ٱلْمَأْوَىٰl-mawāthe refuge

Translation

Then indeed Paradise it (is) the refuge

Verse 42

يَسْـَٔلُونَكَyasalūnakaThey ask you
عَنِʿaniabout
ٱلسَّاعَةِl-sāʿatithe Hour
أَيَّانَayyānawhen
مُرْسَىٰهَاmur'sāhā(is) its arrival

Translation

They ask you about the Hour when (is) its arrival

Verse 43

فِيمَfīmaIn what
أَنتَanta(are) you
مِنmin[of]
ذِكْرَىٰهَآdhik'rāhā(to) mention it

Translation

In what (are) you [of] (to) mention it

Verse 44

إِلَىٰilāTo
رَبِّكَrabbikayour Lord
مُنتَهَىٰهَآmuntahāhā(is) its finality

Translation

To your Lord (is) its finality

Verse 45

إِنَّمَآinnamāOnly
أَنتَantayou
مُنذِرُmundhiru(are) a warner
مَنman(for him) who
يَخْشَىٰهَاyakhshāhāfears it

Translation

Only you (are) a warner (for him) who fears it

Verse 46

كَأَنَّهُمْka-annahumAs though they
يَوْمَyawma(the) Day
يَرَوْنَهَاyarawnahāthey see it
لَمْlamnot
يَلْبَثُوٓا۟yalbathūthey had remained
إِلَّاillāexcept
عَشِيَّةًʿashiyyatanan evening
أَوْawor
ضُحَىٰهَاḍuḥāhāa morning thereof

Translation

As though they (the) Day they see it not they had remained except an evening or a morning thereof
