Chapter 80Meccan42 Verses

Verse 1

عَبَسَʿabasaHe frowned
وَتَوَلَّىٰٓwatawallāand turned away

Translation

He frowned and turned away

Verse 2

أَنanBecause
جَآءَهُjāahucame to him
ٱلْأَعْمَىٰl-aʿmāthe blind man

Translation

Because came to him the blind man

Verse 3

وَمَاwamāBut what
يُدْرِيكَyud'rīkawould make you know
لَعَلَّهُۥlaʿallahuthat he might
يَزَّكَّىٰٓyazzakkāpurify himself

Translation

But what would make you know that he might purify himself

Verse 4

أَوْawOr
يَذَّكَّرُyadhakkarube reminded
فَتَنفَعَهُfatanfaʿahuso would benefit him
ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓl-dhik'rāthe reminder

Translation

Or be reminded so would benefit him the reminder

Verse 5

أَمَّاammāAs for
مَنِmani(him) who
ٱسْتَغْنَىٰis'taghnāconsiders himself free from need

Translation

As for (him) who considers himself free from need

Verse 6

فَأَنتَfa-antaSo you
لَهُۥlahuto him
تَصَدَّىٰtaṣaddāgive attention

Translation

So you to him give attention

Verse 7

وَمَاwamāAnd not
عَلَيْكَʿalaykaupon you
أَلَّاallāthat not
يَزَّكَّىٰyazzakkāhe purifies himself

Translation

And not upon you that not he purifies himself

Verse 8

وَأَمَّاwa-ammāBut as for
مَنman(he) who
جَآءَكَjāakacame to you
يَسْعَىٰyasʿāstriving

Translation

But as for (he) who came to you striving

Verse 9

وَهُوَwahuwaWhile he
يَخْشَىٰyakhshāfears

Translation

While he fears

Verse 10

فَأَنتَfa-antaBut you
عَنْهُʿanhufrom him
تَلَهَّىٰtalahhā(are) distracted

Translation

But you from him (are) distracted

Verse 11

كَلَّآkallāNay
إِنَّهَاinnahāIndeed, it
تَذْكِرَةٌۭtadhkiratun(is) a reminder

Translation

Nay Indeed, it (is) a reminder

Verse 12

فَمَنfamanSo whosoever
شَآءَshāawills
ذَكَرَهُۥdhakarahumay remember it

Translation

So whosoever wills may remember it

Verse 13

فِىIn
صُحُفٍۢṣuḥufinsheets
مُّكَرَّمَةٍۢmukarramatinhonored

Translation

In sheets honored

Verse 14

مَّرْفُوعَةٍۢmarfūʿatinExalted
مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭmuṭahharatinpurified

Translation

Exalted purified

Verse 15

بِأَيْدِىbi-aydīIn (the) hands
سَفَرَةٍۢsafaratin(of) scribes

Translation

In (the) hands (of) scribes

Verse 16

كِرَامٍۭkirāminNoble
بَرَرَةٍۢbararatindutiful

Translation

Noble dutiful

Verse 17

قُتِلَqutilaIs destroyed
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُl-insānu[the] man
مَآhow
أَكْفَرَهُۥakfarahuungrateful is he

Translation

Is destroyed [the] man how ungrateful is he

Verse 18

مِنْminFrom
أَىِّayyiwhat
شَىْءٍshayinthing
خَلَقَهُۥkhalaqahuHe created him

Translation

From what thing He created him

Verse 19

مِنminFrom
نُّطْفَةٍnuṭ'fatina semen-drop
خَلَقَهُۥkhalaqahuHe created him
فَقَدَّرَهُۥfaqaddarahuthen He proportioned him

Translation

From a semen-drop He created him then He proportioned him

Verse 20

ثُمَّthummaThen
ٱلسَّبِيلَl-sabīlathe way
يَسَّرَهُۥyassarahuHe made easy for him

Translation

Then the way He made easy for him

Verse 21

ثُمَّthummaThen
أَمَاتَهُۥamātahuHe causes him to die
فَأَقْبَرَهُۥfa-aqbarahuand provides a grave for him

Translation

Then He causes him to die and provides a grave for him

Verse 22

ثُمَّthummaThen
إِذَاidhāwhen
شَآءَshāaHe wills
أَنشَرَهُۥansharahuHe will resurrect him

Translation

Then when He wills He will resurrect him

Verse 23

كَلَّاkallāNay
لَمَّاlammāNot
يَقْضِyaqḍihe has accomplished
مَآwhat
أَمَرَهُۥamarahuHe commanded him

Translation

Nay Not he has accomplished what He commanded him

Verse 24

فَلْيَنظُرِfalyanẓuriThen let look
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُl-insānuthe man
إِلَىٰilāat
طَعَامِهِۦٓṭaʿāmihihis food

Translation

Then let look the man at his food

Verse 25

اَنَّاannāThat [We]
صَبَبْنَاṣababnā[We] poured
ٱلْمَآءَl-māathe water
صَبًّۭاṣabban(in) abundance

Translation

That [We] [We] poured the water (in) abundance

Verse 26

ثُمَّthummaThen
شَقَقْنَاshaqaqnāWe cleaved
ٱلْأَرْضَl-arḍathe earth
شَقًّۭاshaqqansplitting

Translation

Then We cleaved the earth splitting

Verse 27

فَأَنۢبَتْنَاfa-anbatnāThen We caused to grow
فِيهَاfīhātherein
حَبًّۭاḥabbangrain

Translation

Then We caused to grow therein grain

Verse 28

وَعِنَبًۭاwaʿinabanAnd grapes
وَقَضْبًۭاwaqaḍbanand green fodder

Translation

And grapes and green fodder

Verse 29

وَزَيْتُونًۭاwazaytūnanAnd olive
وَنَخْلًۭاwanakhlanand date-palms

Translation

And olive and date-palms

Verse 30

وَحَدَآئِقَwaḥadāiqaAnd gardens
غُلْبًۭاghul'ban(of) thick foliage

Translation

And gardens (of) thick foliage

Verse 31

وَفَـٰكِهَةًۭwafākihatanAnd fruits
وَأَبًّۭاwa-abbanand grass

Translation

And fruits and grass

Verse 32

مَّتَـٰعًۭاmatāʿan(As) a provision
لَّكُمْlakumfor you
وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْwali-anʿāmikumand for your cattle

Translation

(As) a provision for you and for your cattle

Verse 33

فَإِذَاfa-idhāBut when
جَآءَتِjāaticomes
ٱلصَّآخَّةُl-ṣākhatuthe Deafening Blast

Translation

But when comes the Deafening Blast

Verse 34

يَوْمَyawma(The) Day
يَفِرُّyafirruwill flee
ٱلْمَرْءُl-marua man
مِنْminfrom
أَخِيهِakhīhihis brother

Translation

(The) Day will flee a man from his brother

Verse 35

وَأُمِّهِۦwa-ummihiAnd his mother
وَأَبِيهِwa-abīhiand his father

Translation

And his mother and his father

Verse 36

وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦwaṣāḥibatihiAnd his wife
وَبَنِيهِwabanīhiand his children

Translation

And his wife and his children

Verse 37

لِكُلِّlikulliFor every
ٱمْرِئٍۢim'ri-inman
مِّنْهُمْmin'humamong them
يَوْمَئِذٍۢyawma-idhinthat Day
شَأْنٌۭshanun(will be) a matter
يُغْنِيهِyugh'nīhioccupying him

Translation

For every man among them that Day (will be) a matter occupying him

Verse 38

وُجُوهٌۭwujūhunFaces
يَوْمَئِذٍۢyawma-idhinthat Day
مُّسْفِرَةٌۭmus'firatun(will be) bright

Translation

Faces that Day (will be) bright

Verse 39

ضَاحِكَةٌۭḍāḥikatunLaughing
مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌۭmus'tabshiratunrejoicing at good news

Translation

Laughing rejoicing at good news

Verse 40

وَوُجُوهٌۭwawujūhunAnd faces
يَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat Day
عَلَيْهَاʿalayhāupon them
غَبَرَةٌۭghabaratun(will be) dust

Translation

And faces that Day upon them (will be) dust

Verse 41

تَرْهَقُهَاtarhaquhāWill cover them
قَتَرَةٌqataratundarkness

Translation

Will cover them darkness

Verse 42

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThose
هُمُhumu[they]
ٱلْكَفَرَةُl-kafaratu(are) the disbelievers
ٱلْفَجَرَةُl-fajaratuthe wicked ones

Translation

Those [they] (are) the disbelievers the wicked ones
