Chapter 8Medinan75 Verses

Verse 1

يَسْـَٔلُونَكَyasalūnakaThey ask you
عَنِʿaniabout
ٱلْأَنفَالِ ۖl-anfālithe spoils of war
قُلِquliSay
ٱلْأَنفَالُl-anfāluThe spoils of war
لِلَّهِlillahi(are) for Allah
وَٱلرَّسُولِ ۖwal-rasūliand the Messenger
فَٱتَّقُوا۟fa-ittaqūSo fear
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
وَأَصْلِحُوا۟wa-aṣliḥūand set right
ذَاتَdhātathat
بَيْنِكُمْ ۖbaynikum(which is) between you
وَأَطِيعُوا۟wa-aṭīʿūand obey
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
وَرَسُولَهُۥٓwarasūlahuand His Messenger
إِنinif
كُنتُمkuntumyou are
مُّؤْمِنِينَmu'minīnabelievers

Translation

They ask you about the spoils of war Say The spoils of war (are) for Allah and the Messenger So fear Allah and set right that (which is) between you and obey Allah and His Messenger if you are believers

Verse 2

إِنَّمَاinnamāOnly
ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَl-mu'minūnathe believers
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(are) those who
إِذَاidhāwhen
ذُكِرَdhukirais mentioned
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
وَجِلَتْwajilatfeel fear
قُلُوبُهُمْqulūbuhumtheir hearts
وَإِذَاwa-idhāand when
تُلِيَتْtuliyatare recited
عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimto them
ءَايَـٰتُهُۥāyātuhuHis Verses
زَادَتْهُمْzādathumthey increase them
إِيمَـٰنًۭاīmānan(in) faith
وَعَلَىٰwaʿalāand upon
رَبِّهِمْrabbihimtheir Lord
يَتَوَكَّلُونَyatawakkalūnathey put their trust

Translation

Only the believers (are) those who when is mentioned Allah feel fear their hearts and when are recited to them His Verses they increase them (in) faith and upon their Lord they put their trust

Verse 3

ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose who
يُقِيمُونَyuqīmūnaestablish
ٱلصَّلَوٰةَl-ṣalatathe prayer
وَمِمَّاwamimmāand out of what
رَزَقْنَـٰهُمْrazaqnāhumWe have provided them
يُنفِقُونَyunfiqūnathey spend

Translation

Those who establish the prayer and out of what We have provided them they spend

Verse 4

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThose
هُمُhumuthey are
ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَl-mu'minūnathe believers
حَقًّۭا ۚḥaqqan(in) truth
لَّهُمْlahumFor them
دَرَجَـٰتٌdarajātun(are) ranks
عِندَʿindawith
رَبِّهِمْrabbihimtheir Lord
وَمَغْفِرَةٌۭwamaghfiratunand forgiveness
وَرِزْقٌۭwariz'qunand a provision
كَرِيمٌۭkarīmunnoble

Translation

Those they are the believers (in) truth For them (are) ranks with their Lord and forgiveness and a provision noble

Verse 5

كَمَآkamāAs
أَخْرَجَكَakhrajakabrought you out
رَبُّكَrabbukayour Lord
مِنۢminfrom
بَيْتِكَbaytikayour home
بِٱلْحَقِّbil-ḥaqiin truth
وَإِنَّwa-innawhile indeed
فَرِيقًۭاfarīqana party
مِّنَminaamong
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīnathe believers
لَكَـٰرِهُونَlakārihūnacertainly disliked

Translation

As brought you out your Lord from your home in truth while indeed a party among the believers certainly disliked

Verse 6

يُجَـٰدِلُونَكَyujādilūnakaThey dispute with you
فِىfīconcerning
ٱلْحَقِّl-ḥaqithe truth
بَعْدَ مَاbaʿdamāafter what
تَبَيَّنَtabayyanawas made clear
كَأَنَّمَاka-annamāas if
يُسَاقُونَyusāqūnathey were driven
إِلَىilāto
ٱلْمَوْتِl-mawti[the] death
وَهُمْwahumwhile they
يَنظُرُونَyanẓurūna(were) looking

Translation

They dispute with you concerning the truth after what was made clear as if they were driven to [the] death while they (were) looking

Verse 7

وَإِذْwa-idhAnd when
يَعِدُكُمُyaʿidukumupromised you
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
إِحْدَىiḥ'dāone
ٱلطَّآئِفَتَيْنِl-ṭāifatayni(of) the two groups
أَنَّهَاannahāthat it (would be)
لَكُمْlakumfor you
وَتَوَدُّونَwatawaddūnaand you wished
أَنَّannathat
غَيْرَghayra(one) other than
ذَاتِdhātithat
ٱلشَّوْكَةِl-shawkati(of) the armed
تَكُونُtakūnuwould be
لَكُمْlakumfor you
وَيُرِيدُwayurīduBut intended
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
أَنanto
يُحِقَّyuḥiqqajustify
ٱلْحَقَّl-ḥaqathe truth
بِكَلِمَـٰتِهِۦbikalimātihiby His words
وَيَقْطَعَwayaqṭaʿaand cut off
دَابِرَdābira(the) roots
ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَl-kāfirīna(of) the disbelievers

Translation

And when promised you Allah one (of) the two groups that it (would be) for you and you wished that (one) other than that (of) the armed would be for you But intended Allah to justify the truth by His words and cut off (the) roots (of) the disbelievers

Verse 8

لِيُحِقَّliyuḥiqqaThat He might justify
ٱلْحَقَّl-ḥaqathe truth
وَيُبْطِلَwayub'ṭilaand prove false
ٱلْبَـٰطِلَl-bāṭilathe falsehood
وَلَوْwalaweven if
كَرِهَkarihadisliked (it)
ٱلْمُجْرِمُونَl-muj'rimūnathe criminals

Translation

That He might justify the truth and prove false the falsehood even if disliked (it) the criminals

Verse 9

إِذْidhWhen
تَسْتَغِيثُونَtastaghīthūnayou were seeking help
رَبَّكُمْrabbakum(of) your Lord
فَٱسْتَجَابَfa-is'tajābaand He answered
لَكُمْlakum[to] you
أَنِّىannīIndeed, I am
مُمِدُّكُمmumiddukumgoing to reinforce you
بِأَلْفٍۢbi-alfinwith a thousand
مِّنَminaof
ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِl-malāikatithe Angels
مُرْدِفِينَmur'difīnaone after another

Translation

When you were seeking help (of) your Lord and He answered [to] you Indeed, I am going to reinforce you with a thousand of the Angels one after another

Verse 10

وَمَاwamāAnd not
جَعَلَهُjaʿalahu(it was) made
ٱللَّهُl-lahu(by) Allah
إِلَّاillābut
بُشْرَىٰbush'rāgood tidings
وَلِتَطْمَئِنَّwalitaṭma-innaand so that might be at rest
بِهِۦbihiwith it
قُلُوبُكُمْ ۚqulūbukumyour hearts
وَمَاwamāAnd (there is) no
ٱلنَّصْرُl-naṣru[the] victory
إِلَّاillāexcept
مِنْminfrom
عِندِʿindi[of]
ٱللَّهِ ۚl-lahiAllah
إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
عَزِيزٌʿazīzun(is) All-Mighty
حَكِيمٌḥakīmunAll-Wise

Translation

And not (it was) made (by) Allah but good tidings and so that might be at rest with it your hearts And (there is) no [the] victory except from [of] Allah Indeed Allah (is) All-Mighty All-Wise

Verse 11

إِذْidhWhen
يُغَشِّيكُمُyughashīkumuHe covered you
ٱلنُّعَاسَl-nuʿāsawith [the] slumber
أَمَنَةًۭamanatana security
مِّنْهُmin'hufrom Him
وَيُنَزِّلُwayunazziluand sent down
عَلَيْكُمʿalaykumupon you
مِّنَminafrom
ٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāithe sky
مَآءًۭmāanwater
لِّيُطَهِّرَكُمliyuṭahhirakumso that He may purify you
بِهِۦbihiwith it
وَيُذْهِبَwayudh'hibaand take away
عَنكُمْʿankumfrom you
رِجْزَrij'zaevil (suggestions)
ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِl-shayṭāni(of) the Shaitaan
وَلِيَرْبِطَwaliyarbiṭaAnd to strengthen
عَلَىٰʿalā[on]
قُلُوبِكُمْqulūbikumyour hearts
وَيُثَبِّتَwayuthabbitaand make firm
بِهِbihiwith it
ٱلْأَقْدَامَl-aqdāmayour feet

Translation

When He covered you with [the] slumber a security from Him and sent down upon you from the sky water so that He may purify you with it and take away from you evil (suggestions) (of) the Shaitaan And to strengthen [on] your hearts and make firm with it your feet

Verse 12

إِذْidhWhen
يُوحِىyūḥīinspired
رَبُّكَrabbukayour Lord
إِلَىilāto
ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِl-malāikatithe Angels
أَنِّىannīI am
مَعَكُمْmaʿakumwith you
فَثَبِّتُوا۟fathabbitūso strengthen
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
ءَامَنُوا۟ ۚāmanūbelieved
سَأُلْقِىsa-ul'qīI will cast
فِىfīin
قُلُوبِqulūbi(the) hearts
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(of) those who
كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieved
ٱلرُّعْبَl-ruʿ'bathe terror
فَٱضْرِبُوا۟fa-iḍ'ribūso strike
فَوْقَfawqaabove
ٱلْأَعْنَاقِl-aʿnāqithe necks
وَٱضْرِبُوا۟wa-iḍ'ribūand strike
مِنْهُمْmin'humfrom them
كُلَّkullaevery
بَنَانٍۢbanāninfingertip[s]

Translation

When inspired your Lord to the Angels I am with you so strengthen those who believed I will cast in (the) hearts (of) those who disbelieved the terror so strike above the necks and strike from them every fingertip[s]

Verse 13

ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat
بِأَنَّهُمْbi-annahum(is) because they
شَآقُّوا۟shāqqūopposed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
وَرَسُولَهُۥ ۚwarasūlahuand His Messenger
وَمَنwamanAnd whoever
يُشَاقِقِyushāqiqiopposes
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
وَرَسُولَهُۥwarasūlahuand His Messenger
فَإِنَّfa-innathen indeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
شَدِيدُshadīdu(is) severe
ٱلْعِقَابِl-ʿiqābiin [the] penalty

Translation

That (is) because they opposed Allah and His Messenger And whoever opposes Allah and His Messenger then indeed Allah (is) severe in [the] penalty

Verse 14

ذَٰلِكُمْdhālikumThat
فَذُوقُوهُfadhūqūhuSo taste it
وَأَنَّwa-annaAnd that
لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَlil'kāfirīnafor the disbelievers
عَذَابَʿadhāba(is the) punishment
ٱلنَّارِl-nāri(of) the Fire

Translation

That So taste it And that for the disbelievers (is the) punishment (of) the Fire

Verse 15

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO you
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnawho
ءَامَنُوٓا۟āmanūbelieve
إِذَاidhāWhen
لَقِيتُمُlaqītumuyou meet
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieve
زَحْفًۭاzaḥfanadvancing
فَلَاfalāthen (do) not
تُوَلُّوهُمُtuwallūhumuturn to them
ٱلْأَدْبَارَl-adbārathe backs

Translation

O you who believe When you meet those who disbelieve advancing then (do) not turn to them the backs

Verse 16

وَمَنwamanAnd whoever
يُوَلِّهِمْyuwallihimturns to them
يَوْمَئِذٍۢyawma-idhinthat day
دُبُرَهُۥٓduburahuhis back
إِلَّاillāexcept
مُتَحَرِّفًۭاmutaḥarrifan(as) a strategy
لِّقِتَالٍliqitālinof war
أَوْawor
مُتَحَيِّزًاmutaḥayyizan(to) join
إِلَىٰilāto
فِئَةٍۢfi-atina group
فَقَدْfaqadcertainly
بَآءَbāa(he has) incurred
بِغَضَبٍۢbighaḍabinwrath
مِّنَminaof
ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
وَمَأْوَىٰهُwamawāhuand his abode
جَهَنَّمُ ۖjahannamu(is) Hell
وَبِئْسَwabi'saa wretched
ٱلْمَصِيرُl-maṣīrudestination

Translation

And whoever turns to them that day his back except (as) a strategy of war or (to) join to a group certainly (he has) incurred wrath of Allah and his abode (is) Hell a wretched destination

Verse 17

فَلَمْfalamAnd not
تَقْتُلُوهُمْtaqtulūhumyou kill them
وَلَـٰكِنَّwalākinnabut
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
قَتَلَهُمْ ۚqatalahumkilled them
وَمَاwamāAnd not
رَمَيْتَramaytayou threw
إِذْidhwhen
رَمَيْتَramaytayou threw
وَلَـٰكِنَّwalākinnabut
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
رَمَىٰ ۚramāthrew
وَلِيُبْلِىَwaliyub'liyaand that He may test
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīnathe believers
مِنْهُmin'hufrom Him
بَلَآءًbalāan(with) a trial
حَسَنًا ۚḥasanangood
إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
سَمِيعٌsamīʿun(is) All-Hearing
عَلِيمٌۭʿalīmunAll-Knowing

Translation

And not you kill them but Allah killed them And not you threw when you threw but Allah threw and that He may test the believers from Him (with) a trial good Indeed Allah (is) All-Hearing All-Knowing

Verse 18

ذَٰلِكُمْdhālikumThat (is the case)
وَأَنَّwa-annaand that
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah (is)
مُوهِنُmūhinuone who makes weak
كَيْدِkaydi(the) plan
ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَl-kāfirīna(of) the disbelievers

Translation

That (is the case) and that Allah (is) one who makes weak (the) plan (of) the disbelievers

Verse 19

إِنinIf
تَسْتَفْتِحُوا۟tastaftiḥūyou ask for victory
فَقَدْfaqadthen certainly
جَآءَكُمُjāakumuhas come to you
ٱلْفَتْحُ ۖl-fatḥuthe victory
وَإِنwa-inAnd if
تَنتَهُوا۟tantahūyou desist
فَهُوَfahuwathen it (is)
خَيْرٌۭkhayrungood
لَّكُمْ ۖlakumfor you
وَإِنwa-inbut if
تَعُودُوا۟taʿūdūyou return
نَعُدْnaʿudWe will return (too)
وَلَنwalanAnd never
تُغْنِىَtugh'niyawill avail
عَنكُمْʿankumyou
فِئَتُكُمْfi-atukumyour forces
شَيْـًۭٔاshayananything
وَلَوْwalaweven if
كَثُرَتْkathurat(they are) numerous
وَأَنَّwa-annaAnd that
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
مَعَmaʿa(is) with
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīnathe believers

Translation

If you ask for victory then certainly has come to you the victory And if you desist then it (is) good for you but if you return We will return (too) And never will avail you your forces anything even if (they are) numerous And that Allah (is) with the believers

Verse 20

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO you
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnawho
ءَامَنُوٓا۟āmanūbelieve
أَطِيعُوا۟aṭīʿūObey
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
وَرَسُولَهُۥwarasūlahuand His Messenger
وَلَاwalāAnd (do) not
تَوَلَّوْا۟tawallawturn away
عَنْهُʿanhufrom him
وَأَنتُمْwa-antumwhile you
تَسْمَعُونَtasmaʿūnahear

Translation

O you who believe Obey Allah and His Messenger And (do) not turn away from him while you hear

Verse 21

وَلَاwalāAnd (do) not
تَكُونُوا۟takūnūbe
كَٱلَّذِينَka-alladhīnalike those who
قَالُوا۟qālūsay
سَمِعْنَاsamiʿ'nāWe heard
وَهُمْwahumwhile they
لَاlā(do) not
يَسْمَعُونَyasmaʿūnahear

Translation

And (do) not be like those who say We heard while they (do) not hear

Verse 22

۞ إِنَّinnaIndeed
شَرَّsharraworst
ٱلدَّوَآبِّl-dawābi(of) the living creatures
عِندَʿindanear
ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
ٱلصُّمُّl-ṣumu(are) the deaf
ٱلْبُكْمُl-buk'muthe dumb
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
لَاlā(do) not
يَعْقِلُونَyaʿqilūnause (their) intellect

Translation

Indeed worst (of) the living creatures near Allah (are) the deaf the dumb those who (do) not use (their) intellect

Verse 23

وَلَوْwalawAnd if
عَلِمَʿalima(had) known
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
فِيهِمْfīhimin them
خَيْرًۭاkhayranany good
لَّأَسْمَعَهُمْ ۖla-asmaʿahumsurely, He (would) have made them hear
وَلَوْwalawAnd if
أَسْمَعَهُمْasmaʿahumHe had made them hear
لَتَوَلَّوا۟latawallawsurely they would have turned away
وَّهُمwahumwhile they
مُّعْرِضُونَmuʿ'riḍūna(were) averse

Translation

And if (had) known Allah in them any good surely, He (would) have made them hear And if He had made them hear surely they would have turned away while they (were) averse

Verse 24

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO you
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnawho
ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieve
ٱسْتَجِيبُوا۟is'tajībūRespond
لِلَّهِlillahito Allah
وَلِلرَّسُولِwalilrrasūliand His Messenger
إِذَاidhāwhen
دَعَاكُمْdaʿākumhe calls you
لِمَاlimāto what
يُحْيِيكُمْ ۖyuḥ'yīkumgives you life
وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟wa-iʿ'lamūAnd know
أَنَّannathat
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
يَحُولُyaḥūlucomes
بَيْنَbayna(in) between
ٱلْمَرْءِl-maria man
وَقَلْبِهِۦwaqalbihiand his heart
وَأَنَّهُۥٓwa-annahuand that
إِلَيْهِilayhito Him
تُحْشَرُونَtuḥ'sharūnayou will be gathered

Translation

O you who believe Respond to Allah and His Messenger when he calls you to what gives you life And know that Allah comes (in) between a man and his heart and that to Him you will be gathered

Verse 25

وَٱتَّقُوا۟wa-ittaqūAnd fear
فِتْنَةًۭfit'natana trial
لَّاlānot
تُصِيبَنَّtuṣībannawhich will afflict
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
ظَلَمُوا۟ẓalamūdo wrong
مِنكُمْminkumamong you
خَآصَّةًۭ ۖkhāṣṣatanexclusively
وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟wa-iʿ'lamūAnd know
أَنَّannathat
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
شَدِيدُshadīdu(is) severe
ٱلْعِقَابِl-ʿiqābi(in) the penalty

Translation

And fear a trial not which will afflict those who do wrong among you exclusively And know that Allah (is) severe (in) the penalty

Verse 26

وَٱذْكُرُوٓا۟wa-udh'kurūAnd remember
إِذْidhwhen
أَنتُمْantumyou
قَلِيلٌۭqalīlun(were) few
مُّسْتَضْعَفُونَmus'taḍʿafūna(and) deemed weak
فِىfīin
ٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earth
تَخَافُونَtakhāfūnafearing
أَنanthat
يَتَخَطَّفَكُمُyatakhaṭṭafakumumight do away with you
ٱلنَّاسُl-nāsuthe men
فَـَٔاوَىٰكُمْfaāwākumthen He sheltered you
وَأَيَّدَكُمwa-ayyadakumand strengthened you
بِنَصْرِهِۦbinaṣrihiwith His help
وَرَزَقَكُمwarazaqakumand provided you
مِّنَminaof
ٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتِl-ṭayibātithe good things
لَعَلَّكُمْlaʿallakumso that you may
تَشْكُرُونَtashkurūna(be) thankful

Translation

And remember when you (were) few (and) deemed weak in the earth fearing that might do away with you the men then He sheltered you and strengthened you with His help and provided you of the good things so that you may (be) thankful

Verse 27

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO you
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnawho
ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieve
لَاlā(Do) not
تَخُونُوا۟takhūnūbetray
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
وَٱلرَّسُولَwal-rasūlaand the Messenger
وَتَخُونُوٓا۟watakhūnūor betray
أَمَـٰنَـٰتِكُمْamānātikumyour trusts
وَأَنتُمْwa-antumwhile you
تَعْلَمُونَtaʿlamūnaknow

Translation

O you who believe (Do) not betray Allah and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know

Verse 28

وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟wa-iʿ'lamūAnd know
أَنَّمَآannamāthat
أَمْوَٰلُكُمْamwālukumyour wealth
وَأَوْلَـٰدُكُمْwa-awlādukumand your children
فِتْنَةٌۭfit'natun(are) a trial
وَأَنَّwa-annaAnd that
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
عِندَهُۥٓʿindahuwith Him
أَجْرٌajrun(is) a reward
عَظِيمٌۭʿaẓīmungreat

Translation

And know that your wealth and your children (are) a trial And that Allah with Him (is) a reward great

Verse 29

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO you
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnawho
ءَامَنُوٓا۟āmanūbelieve
إِنinIf
تَتَّقُوا۟tattaqūyou fear
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
يَجْعَلyajʿalHe will grant
لَّكُمْlakumyou
فُرْقَانًۭاfur'qānana criterion
وَيُكَفِّرْwayukaffirand will remove
عَنكُمْʿankumfrom you
سَيِّـَٔاتِكُمْsayyiātikumyour evil deeds
وَيَغْفِرْwayaghfirand forgive
لَكُمْ ۗlakumyou
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
ذُوdhū(is) the Possessor
ٱلْفَضْلِl-faḍli(of) Bounty
ٱلْعَظِيمِl-ʿaẓīmithe Great

Translation

O you who believe If you fear Allah He will grant you a criterion and will remove from you your evil deeds and forgive you And Allah (is) the Possessor (of) Bounty the Great

Verse 30

وَإِذْwa-idhAnd when
يَمْكُرُyamkuruplotted
بِكَbikaagainst you
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieved
لِيُثْبِتُوكَliyuth'bitūkathat they restrain you
أَوْawor
يَقْتُلُوكَyaqtulūkakill you
أَوْawor
يُخْرِجُوكَ ۚyukh'rijūkadrive you out
وَيَمْكُرُونَwayamkurūnaAnd they were planning
وَيَمْكُرُwayamkuruand (also) was planning
ٱللَّهُ ۖl-lahuAllah
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
خَيْرُkhayruis (the) Best
ٱلْمَـٰكِرِينَl-mākirīna(of) the Planners

Translation

And when plotted against you those who disbelieved that they restrain you or kill you or drive you out And they were planning and (also) was planning Allah And Allah is (the) Best (of) the Planners

Verse 31

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
تُتْلَىٰtut'lāare recited
عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimto them
ءَايَـٰتُنَاāyātunāOur Verses
قَالُوا۟qālūthey say
قَدْqadVerily
سَمِعْنَاsamiʿ'nāwe have heard
لَوْlawif
نَشَآءُnashāuwe wish
لَقُلْنَاlaqul'nāsurely, we could say
مِثْلَmith'lalike
هَـٰذَآ ۙhādhāthis
إِنْinNot
هَـٰذَآhādhāis this
إِلَّآillābut
أَسَـٰطِيرُasāṭīrutales
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīna(of) the former (people)

Translation

And when are recited to them Our Verses they say Verily we have heard if we wish surely, we could say like this Not is this but tales (of) the former (people)

Verse 32

وَإِذْwa-idhAnd when
قَالُوا۟qālūthey said
ٱللَّهُمَّl-lahumaO Allah
إِنinIf
كَانَkānawas
هَـٰذَاhādhāthis
هُوَhuwa[it]
ٱلْحَقَّl-ḥaqathe truth
مِنْmin[of]
عِندِكَʿindikafrom You
فَأَمْطِرْfa-amṭirthen (send) rain
عَلَيْنَاʿalaynāupon us
حِجَارَةًۭḥijāratan(of) stones
مِّنَminafrom
ٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāithe sky
أَوِawior
ٱئْتِنَاi'tinābring (upon) us
بِعَذَابٍbiʿadhābina punishment
أَلِيمٍۢalīminpainful

Translation

And when they said O Allah If was this [it] the truth [of] from You then (send) rain upon us (of) stones from the sky or bring (upon) us a punishment painful

Verse 33

وَمَاwamāBut not
كَانَkānais
ٱللَّهُl-lahu(for) Allah
لِيُعَذِّبَهُمْliyuʿadhibahumthat He punishes them
وَأَنتَwa-antawhile you
فِيهِمْ ۚfīhim(are) among them
وَمَاwamāand not
كَانَkānais
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
مُعَذِّبَهُمْmuʿadhibahumthe One Who punishes them
وَهُمْwahumwhile they
يَسْتَغْفِرُونَyastaghfirūnaseek forgiveness

Translation

But not is (for) Allah that He punishes them while you (are) among them and not is Allah the One Who punishes them while they seek forgiveness

Verse 34

وَمَاwamāBut what
لَهُمْlahum(is) for them
أَلَّاallāthat not
يُعَذِّبَهُمُyuʿadhibahumu(should) punish them
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
وَهُمْwahumwhile they
يَصُدُّونَyaṣuddūnahinder (people)
عَنِʿanifrom
ٱلْمَسْجِدِl-masjidiAl-Masjid
ٱلْحَرَامِl-ḥarāmiAl-Haraam
وَمَاwamāwhile not
كَانُوٓا۟kānūthey are
أَوْلِيَآءَهُۥٓ ۚawliyāahuits guardians
إِنْinNot (can be)
أَوْلِيَآؤُهُۥٓawliyāuhuits guardians
إِلَّاillāexcept
ٱلْمُتَّقُونَl-mutaqūnathe ones who fear Allah
وَلَـٰكِنَّwalākinnabut
أَكْثَرَهُمْaktharahummost of them
لَاlā(do) not
يَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūnaknow

Translation

But what (is) for them that not (should) punish them Allah while they hinder (people) from Al-Masjid Al-Haraam while not they are its guardians Not (can be) its guardians except the ones who fear Allah but most of them (do) not know

Verse 35

وَمَاwamāAnd not
كَانَkānawas
صَلَاتُهُمْṣalātuhumtheir prayer
عِندَʿindaat
ٱلْبَيْتِl-baytithe House
إِلَّاillāexcept
مُكَآءًۭmukāanwhistling
وَتَصْدِيَةًۭ ۚwataṣdiyatanand clapping
فَذُوقُوا۟fadhūqūSo taste
ٱلْعَذَابَl-ʿadhābathe punishment
بِمَاbimābecause
كُنتُمْkuntumyou used to
تَكْفُرُونَtakfurūnadisbelieve

Translation

And not was their prayer at the House except whistling and clapping So taste the punishment because you used to disbelieve

Verse 36

إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieve
يُنفِقُونَyunfiqūnathey spend
أَمْوَٰلَهُمْamwālahumtheir wealth
لِيَصُدُّوا۟liyaṣuddūto hinder (people)
عَنʿanfrom
سَبِيلِsabīli(the) way
ٱللَّهِ ۚl-lahi(of) Allah
فَسَيُنفِقُونَهَاfasayunfiqūnahāSo they will spend it
ثُمَّthummathen
تَكُونُtakūnuit will be
عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimfor them
حَسْرَةًۭḥasratana regret
ثُمَّthummathen
يُغْلَبُونَ ۗyugh'labūnathey will be overcome
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who
كَفَرُوٓا۟kafarūdisbelieve
إِلَىٰilāto
جَهَنَّمَjahannamaHell
يُحْشَرُونَyuḥ'sharūnathey will be gathered

Translation

Indeed those who disbelieve they spend their wealth to hinder (people) from (the) way (of) Allah So they will spend it then it will be for them a regret then they will be overcome And those who disbelieve to Hell they will be gathered

Verse 37

لِيَمِيزَliyamīzaThat may distinguish
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
ٱلْخَبِيثَl-khabīthathe wicked
مِنَminafrom
ٱلطَّيِّبِl-ṭayibithe good
وَيَجْعَلَwayajʿalaand place
ٱلْخَبِيثَl-khabīthathe wicked
بَعْضَهُۥbaʿḍahusome of them
عَلَىٰʿalāon
بَعْضٍۢbaʿḍinothers
فَيَرْكُمَهُۥfayarkumahuand heap them
جَمِيعًۭاjamīʿanall together
فَيَجْعَلَهُۥfayajʿalahuand put them
فِىfīin
جَهَنَّمَ ۚjahannamaHell
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThose
هُمُhumuthey
ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَl-khāsirūna(are) the losers

Translation

That may distinguish Allah the wicked from the good and place the wicked some of them on others and heap them all together and put them in Hell Those they (are) the losers

Verse 38

قُلqulSay
لِّلَّذِينَlilladhīnato those who
كَفَرُوٓا۟kafarūdisbelieve
إِنinif
يَنتَهُوا۟yantahūthey cease
يُغْفَرْyugh'farwill be forgiven
لَهُمlahumfor them
مَّاmāwhat
قَدْqad[verily]
سَلَفَsalafa(is) past
وَإِنwa-inBut if
يَعُودُوا۟yaʿūdūthey return
فَقَدْfaqadthen verily
مَضَتْmaḍatpreceded
سُنَّتُsunnatu(the) practice
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīna(of) the former (people)

Translation

Say to those who disbelieve if they cease will be forgiven for them what [verily] (is) past But if they return then verily preceded (the) practice (of) the former (people)

Verse 39

وَقَـٰتِلُوهُمْwaqātilūhumAnd fight them
حَتَّىٰḥattāuntil
لَاlānot
تَكُونَtakūnathere is
فِتْنَةٌۭfit'natunoppression
وَيَكُونَwayakūnaand is
ٱلدِّينُl-dīnuthe religion
كُلُّهُۥkulluhuall of it
لِلَّهِ ۚlillahifor Allah
فَإِنِfa-iniBut if
ٱنتَهَوْا۟intahawthey cease
فَإِنَّfa-innathen indeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
بِمَاbimāof what
يَعْمَلُونَyaʿmalūnathey do
بَصِيرٌۭbaṣīrun(is) All-Seer

Translation

And fight them until not there is oppression and is the religion all of it for Allah But if they cease then indeed Allah of what they do (is) All-Seer

Verse 40

وَإِنwa-inAnd if
تَوَلَّوْا۟tawallawthey turn away
فَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟fa-iʿ'lamūthen know
أَنَّannathat
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
مَوْلَىٰكُمْ ۚmawlākum(is) your Protector
نِعْمَniʿ'maExcellent
ٱلْمَوْلَىٰl-mawlā(is) the Protector
وَنِعْمَwaniʿ'maand Excellent
ٱلنَّصِيرُl-naṣīru(is) the Helper

Translation

And if they turn away then know that Allah (is) your Protector Excellent (is) the Protector and Excellent (is) the Helper

Verse 41

۞ وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟wa-iʿ'lamūAnd know
أَنَّمَاannamāthat what
غَنِمْتُمghanim'tumyou obtain (as) spoils of war
مِّنminof
شَىْءٍۢshayinanything
فَأَنَّfa-annathen that
لِلَّهِlillahifor Allah
خُمُسَهُۥkhumusahu(is) one fifth of it
وَلِلرَّسُولِwalilrrasūliand for the Messenger
وَلِذِىwalidhīand for the
ٱلْقُرْبَىٰl-qur'bānear relatives
وَٱلْيَتَـٰمَىٰwal-yatāmāand the orphans
وَٱلْمَسَـٰكِينِwal-masākīniand the needy
وَٱبْنِwa-ib'niand the
ٱلسَّبِيلِl-sabīliwayfarer
إِنinif
كُنتُمْkuntumyou
ءَامَنتُمāmantumbelieve
بِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Allah
وَمَآwamāand (in) what
أَنزَلْنَاanzalnāWe sent down
عَلَىٰʿalāto
عَبْدِنَاʿabdināOur slave
يَوْمَyawma(on the) day
ٱلْفُرْقَانِl-fur'qāni(of) the criterion
يَوْمَyawma(the) day
ٱلْتَقَىl-taqā(when) met
ٱلْجَمْعَانِ ۗl-jamʿānithe two forces
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
عَلَىٰʿalā(is) on
كُلِّkullievery
شَىْءٍۢshayinthing
قَدِيرٌqadīrunAll-Powerful

Translation

And know that what you obtain (as) spoils of war of anything then that for Allah (is) one fifth of it and for the Messenger and for the near relatives and the orphans and the needy and the wayfarer if you believe in Allah and (in) what We sent down to Our slave (on the) day (of) the criterion (the) day (when) met the two forces And Allah (is) on every thing All-Powerful

Verse 42

إِذْidhWhen
أَنتُمantumyou (were)
بِٱلْعُدْوَةِbil-ʿud'wation side of the valley
ٱلدُّنْيَاl-dun'yāthe nearer
وَهُمwahumand they
بِٱلْعُدْوَةِbil-ʿud'wati(were) on the side
ٱلْقُصْوَىٰl-quṣ'wāthe farther
وَٱلرَّكْبُwal-rakbuand the caravan
أَسْفَلَasfala(was) lower
مِنكُمْ ۚminkumthan you
وَلَوْwalawAnd if
تَوَاعَدتُّمْtawāʿadttumyou (had) made an appointment
لَٱخْتَلَفْتُمْla-ikh'talaftumcertainly you would have failed
فِىfīin
ٱلْمِيعَـٰدِ ۙl-mīʿādithe appointment
وَلَـٰكِنwalākinBut
لِّيَقْضِىَliyaqḍiyathat might accomplish
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
أَمْرًۭاamrana matter
كَانَkāna(that) was
مَفْعُولًۭاmafʿūlandestined
لِّيَهْلِكَliyahlikathat (might be) destroyed
مَنْman(those) who
هَلَكَhalaka(were to be) destroyed
عَنۢʿanon
بَيِّنَةٍۢbayyinatina clear evidence
وَيَحْيَىٰwayaḥyāand (might) live
مَنْman(those) who
حَىَّḥayya(were to) live
عَنۢʿanon
بَيِّنَةٍۢ ۗbayyinatina clear evidence
وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
لَسَمِيعٌlasamīʿun(is) All-Hearing
عَلِيمٌʿalīmunAll-Knowing

Translation

When you (were) on side of the valley the nearer and they (were) on the side the farther and the caravan (was) lower than you And if you (had) made an appointment certainly you would have failed in the appointment But that might accomplish Allah a matter (that) was destined that (might be) destroyed (those) who (were to be) destroyed on a clear evidence and (might) live (those) who (were to) live on a clear evidence And indeed Allah (is) All-Hearing All-Knowing

Verse 43

إِذْidhWhen
يُرِيكَهُمُyurīkahumuyou (where) shown them
ٱللَّهُl-lahu(by) Allah
فِىfīin
مَنَامِكَmanāmikayour dream
قَلِيلًۭا ۖqalīlan(as) few
وَلَوْwalawand if
أَرَىٰكَهُمْarākahumHe had shown them to you
كَثِيرًۭاkathīran(as) many
لَّفَشِلْتُمْlafashil'tumsurely you would have lost courage
وَلَتَنَـٰزَعْتُمْwalatanāzaʿtumand surely you would have disputed
فِىfīin
ٱلْأَمْرِl-amrithe matter
وَلَـٰكِنَّwalākinnabut
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
سَلَّمَ ۗsallamasaved (you)
إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, He
عَلِيمٌۢʿalīmun(is) All-Knower
بِذَاتِbidhātiof what is in
ٱلصُّدُورِl-ṣudūrithe breasts

Translation

When you (where) shown them (by) Allah in your dream (as) few and if He had shown them to you (as) many surely you would have lost courage and surely you would have disputed in the matter but Allah saved (you) Indeed, He (is) All-Knower of what is in the breasts

Verse 44

وَإِذْwa-idhAnd when
يُرِيكُمُوهُمْyurīkumūhumHe showed them to you
إِذِidhiwhen
ٱلْتَقَيْتُمْl-taqaytumyou met
فِىٓfīin
أَعْيُنِكُمْaʿyunikumyour eyes
قَلِيلًۭاqalīlan(as) few
وَيُقَلِّلُكُمْwayuqallilukumand He made you (appear) as few
فِىٓfīin
أَعْيُنِهِمْaʿyunihimtheir eyes
لِيَقْضِىَliyaqḍiyathat might accomplish
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah might accomplish
أَمْرًۭاamrana matter
كَانَkāna(that) was
مَفْعُولًۭا ۗmafʿūlan(already) destined
وَإِلَىwa-ilāAnd to
ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
تُرْجَعُtur'jaʿureturn
ٱلْأُمُورُl-umūru(all) the matters

Translation

And when He showed them to you when you met in your eyes (as) few and He made you (appear) as few in their eyes that might accomplish Allah might accomplish a matter (that) was (already) destined And to Allah return (all) the matters

Verse 45

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO you
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnawho
ءَامَنُوٓا۟āmanūbelieve
إِذَاidhāWhen
لَقِيتُمْlaqītumyou meet
فِئَةًۭfi-atana force
فَٱثْبُتُوا۟fa-uth'butūthen be firm
وَٱذْكُرُوا۟wa-udh'kurūand remember
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
كَثِيرًۭاkathīranmuch
لَّعَلَّكُمْlaʿallakumso that you may
تُفْلِحُونَtuf'liḥūna(be) successful

Translation

O you who believe When you meet a force then be firm and remember Allah much so that you may (be) successful

Verse 46

وَأَطِيعُوا۟wa-aṭīʿūAnd obey
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
وَرَسُولَهُۥwarasūlahuand His Messenger
وَلَاwalāand (do) not
تَنَـٰزَعُوا۟tanāzaʿūdispute
فَتَفْشَلُوا۟fatafshalūlest you lose courage
وَتَذْهَبَwatadhhabaand (would) depart
رِيحُكُمْ ۖrīḥukumyour strength
وَٱصْبِرُوٓا۟ ۚwa-iṣ'birūand be patient
إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
مَعَmaʿa(is) with
ٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَl-ṣābirīnathe patient ones

Translation

And obey Allah and His Messenger and (do) not dispute lest you lose courage and (would) depart your strength and be patient Indeed Allah (is) with the patient ones

Verse 47

وَلَاwalāAnd (do) not
تَكُونُوا۟takūnūbe
كَٱلَّذِينَka-alladhīnalike those who
خَرَجُوا۟kharajūcame forth
مِنminfrom
دِيَـٰرِهِمdiyārihimtheir homes
بَطَرًۭاbaṭaranboastfully
وَرِئَآءَwariāaand showing off
ٱلنَّاسِl-nāsi(to) the people
وَيَصُدُّونَwayaṣuddūnaand hinder (them)
عَنʿanfrom
سَبِيلِsabīli(the) way
ٱللَّهِ ۚl-lahi(of) Allah
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
بِمَاbimāof what
يَعْمَلُونَyaʿmalūnathey do
مُحِيطٌۭmuḥīṭun(is) All-Encompassing

Translation

And (do) not be like those who came forth from their homes boastfully and showing off (to) the people and hinder (them) from (the) way (of) Allah And Allah of what they do (is) All-Encompassing

Verse 48

وَإِذْwa-idhAnd when
زَيَّنَzayyanamade fair-seeming
لَهُمُlahumuto them
ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُl-shayṭānuthe Shaitaan
أَعْمَـٰلَهُمْaʿmālahumtheir deeds
وَقَالَwaqālaand he said
لَاlāNo (one)
غَالِبَghāliba(can) overcome
لَكُمُlakumu[to] you
ٱلْيَوْمَl-yawmatoday
مِنَminafrom
ٱلنَّاسِl-nāsithe people
وَإِنِّىwa-innīand indeed, I am
جَارٌۭjāruna neighbor
لَّكُمْ ۖlakumfor you
فَلَمَّاfalammāBut when
تَرَآءَتِtarāaticame in sight
ٱلْفِئَتَانِl-fi-atānithe two forces
نَكَصَnakaṣahe turned away
عَلَىٰʿalāon
عَقِبَيْهِʿaqibayhihis heels
وَقَالَwaqālaand said
إِنِّىinnīIndeed, I am
بَرِىٓءٌۭbarīonfree
مِّنكُمْminkumof you
إِنِّىٓinnīIndeed, I
أَرَىٰarāsee
مَاmāwhat
لَاlānot
تَرَوْنَtarawnayou see
إِنِّىٓinnīindeed, I
أَخَافُakhāfu[I] fear
ٱللَّهَ ۚl-lahaAllah
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
شَدِيدُshadīdu(is) severe
ٱلْعِقَابِl-ʿiqābi(in) the penalty

Translation

And when made fair-seeming to them the Shaitaan their deeds and he said No (one) (can) overcome [to] you today from the people and indeed, I am a neighbor for you But when came in sight the two forces he turned away on his heels and said Indeed, I am free of you Indeed, I see what not you see indeed, I [I] fear Allah And Allah (is) severe (in) the penalty

Verse 49

إِذْidhWhen
يَقُولُyaqūlusaid
ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَl-munāfiqūnathe hypocrites
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaand those who
فِىfīin
قُلُوبِهِمqulūbihimtheir hearts
مَّرَضٌmaraḍun(was) a disease
غَرَّgharra(Had) deluded
هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِhāulāithese (people)
دِينُهُمْ ۗdīnuhumtheir religion
وَمَنwamanBut whoever
يَتَوَكَّلْyatawakkalputs (his) trust
عَلَىʿalāin
ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
فَإِنَّfa-innathen indeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
عَزِيزٌʿazīzun(is) All-Mighty
حَكِيمٌۭḥakīmunAll-Wise

Translation

When said the hypocrites and those who in their hearts (was) a disease (Had) deluded these (people) their religion But whoever puts (his) trust in Allah then indeed Allah (is) All-Mighty All-Wise

Verse 50

وَلَوْwalawAnd if
تَرَىٰٓtarāyou (could) see
إِذْidhwhen
يَتَوَفَّىyatawaffātake away souls
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(of) those who
كَفَرُوا۟ ۙkafarūdisbelieve
ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُl-malāikatuthe Angels
يَضْرِبُونَyaḍribūnastriking
وُجُوهَهُمْwujūhahumtheir faces
وَأَدْبَـٰرَهُمْwa-adbārahumand their backs
وَذُوقُوا۟wadhūqūTaste
عَذَابَʿadhāba(the) punishment
ٱلْحَرِيقِl-ḥarīqi(of) the Blazing Fire

Translation

And if you (could) see when take away souls (of) those who disbelieve the Angels striking their faces and their backs Taste (the) punishment (of) the Blazing Fire

Verse 51

ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat
بِمَاbimā(is) for what
قَدَّمَتْqaddamatsent forth
أَيْدِيكُمْaydīkumyour hands
وَأَنَّwa-annaAnd indeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
لَيْسَlaysa(is) not
بِظَلَّـٰمٍۢbiẓallāminunjust
لِّلْعَبِيدِlil'ʿabīdito His slaves

Translation

That (is) for what sent forth your hands And indeed Allah (is) not unjust to His slaves

Verse 52

كَدَأْبِkadabiLike (the) way
ءَالِāli(of) people
فِرْعَوْنَ ۙfir'ʿawna(of) Firaun
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaand those who
مِنmin(were) from
قَبْلِهِمْ ۚqablihimbefore them
كَفَرُوا۟kafarūThey disbelieved
بِـَٔايَـٰتِbiāyātiin (the) Signs
ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
فَأَخَذَهُمُfa-akhadhahumuso seized them
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
بِذُنُوبِهِمْ ۗbidhunūbihimfor their sins
إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
قَوِىٌّۭqawiyyun(is) All-Strong
شَدِيدُshadīdu(and) severe
ٱلْعِقَابِl-ʿiqābi(in) the penalty

Translation

Like (the) way (of) people (of) Firaun and those who (were) from before them They disbelieved in (the) Signs (of) Allah so seized them Allah for their sins Indeed Allah (is) All-Strong (and) severe (in) the penalty

Verse 53

ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat
بِأَنَّbi-anna(is) because
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
لَمْlamnot
يَكُyakuis
مُغَيِّرًۭاmughayyiranOne Who changes
نِّعْمَةًniʿ'matana favor
أَنْعَمَهَاanʿamahāwhich He had bestowed
عَلَىٰʿalāon
قَوْمٍqawmina people
حَتَّىٰḥattāuntil
يُغَيِّرُوا۟yughayyirūthey change
مَاmāwhat
بِأَنفُسِهِمْ ۙbi-anfusihim(is) in themselves
وَأَنَّwa-annaAnd indeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
سَمِيعٌsamīʿun(is) All-Hearing
عَلِيمٌۭʿalīmunAll-Knowing

Translation

That (is) because Allah not is One Who changes a favor which He had bestowed on a people until they change what (is) in themselves And indeed Allah (is) All-Hearing All-Knowing

Verse 54

كَدَأْبِkadabiLike (the) way
ءَالِāli(of) people
فِرْعَوْنَ ۙfir'ʿawna(of) Firaun
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaand those who
مِنmin(were) from
قَبْلِهِمْ ۚqablihimbefore them
كَذَّبُوا۟kadhabūThey denied
بِـَٔايَـٰتِbiāyāti(the) Signs
رَبِّهِمْrabbihim(of) their Lord
فَأَهْلَكْنَـٰهُمfa-ahlaknāhumso We destroyed them
بِذُنُوبِهِمْbidhunūbihimfor their sins
وَأَغْرَقْنَآwa-aghraqnāand We drowned
ءَالَāla(the) people
فِرْعَوْنَ ۚfir'ʿawna(of) Firaun
وَكُلٌّۭwakullunand (they) all
كَانُوا۟kānūwere
ظَـٰلِمِينَẓālimīnawrongdoers

Translation

Like (the) way (of) people (of) Firaun and those who (were) from before them They denied (the) Signs (of) their Lord so We destroyed them for their sins and We drowned (the) people (of) Firaun and (they) all were wrongdoers

Verse 55

إِنَّinnaIndeed
شَرَّsharra(the) worst
ٱلدَّوَآبِّl-dawābi(of) the living creatures
عِندَʿindanear
ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(are) those who
كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieve
فَهُمْfahumand they
لَاlā(will) not
يُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūnabelieve

Translation

Indeed (the) worst (of) the living creatures near Allah (are) those who disbelieve and they (will) not believe

Verse 56

ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose who
عَـٰهَدتَّʿāhadttayou made a covenant
مِنْهُمْmin'humwith them
ثُمَّthummathen
يَنقُضُونَyanquḍūnathey break
عَهْدَهُمْʿahdahumtheir covenant
فِىfī[in]
كُلِّkullievery
مَرَّةٍۢmarratintime
وَهُمْwahumand they
لَاlā(do) not
يَتَّقُونَyattaqūnafear (Allah)

Translation

Those who you made a covenant with them then they break their covenant [in] every time and they (do) not fear (Allah)

Verse 57

فَإِمَّاfa-immāSo if
تَثْقَفَنَّهُمْtathqafannahumyou gain dominance over them
فِىfīin
ٱلْحَرْبِl-ḥarbithe war
فَشَرِّدْfasharriddisperse
بِهِمbihimby them
مَّنْman(those) who
خَلْفَهُمْkhalfahum(are) behind them
لَعَلَّهُمْlaʿallahumso that they may
يَذَّكَّرُونَyadhakkarūnatake heed

Translation

So if you gain dominance over them in the war disperse by them (those) who (are) behind them so that they may take heed

Verse 58

وَإِمَّاwa-immāAnd if
تَخَافَنَّtakhāfannayou fear
مِنminfrom
قَوْمٍqawmina people
خِيَانَةًۭkhiyānatanbetrayal
فَٱنۢبِذْfa-inbidhthrow back
إِلَيْهِمْilayhimto them
عَلَىٰʿalāon
سَوَآءٍ ۚsawāinequal (terms)
إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
لَاlā(does) not
يُحِبُّyuḥibbulove
ٱلْخَآئِنِينَl-khāinīnathe traitors

Translation

And if you fear from a people betrayal throw back to them on equal (terms) Indeed Allah (does) not love the traitors

Verse 59

وَلَاwalāAnd (let) not
يَحْسَبَنَّyaḥsabannathink
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieve
سَبَقُوٓا۟ ۚsabaqūthey can outstrip
إِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed, they
لَاlā(can) not
يُعْجِزُونَyuʿ'jizūnaescape

Translation

And (let) not think those who disbelieve they can outstrip Indeed, they (can) not escape

Verse 60

وَأَعِدُّوا۟wa-aʿiddūAnd prepare
لَهُمlahumfor them
مَّاmāwhatever
ٱسْتَطَعْتُمis'taṭaʿtumyou able (to)
مِّنminof
قُوَّةٍۢquwwatinforce
وَمِنwaminand of
رِّبَاطِribāṭitethered
ٱلْخَيْلِl-khaylihorses
تُرْهِبُونَtur'hibūna(to) terrify
بِهِۦbihitherewith
عَدُوَّʿaduwwa(the) enemy
ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
وَعَدُوَّكُمْwaʿaduwwakumand your enemy
وَءَاخَرِينَwaākharīnaand others
مِنminfrom
دُونِهِمْdūnihimbesides them
لَاlānot
تَعْلَمُونَهُمُtaʿlamūnahumu(do) you know them
ٱللَّهُl-lahu(but) Allah
يَعْلَمُهُمْ ۚyaʿlamuhumknows them
وَمَاwamāAnd whatever
تُنفِقُوا۟tunfiqūyou spend
مِنminfrom
شَىْءٍۢshayin(any) thing
فِىfīin
سَبِيلِsabīli(the) way
ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
يُوَفَّyuwaffait will be fully repaid
إِلَيْكُمْilaykumto you
وَأَنتُمْwa-antumand you
لَاlā(will) not
تُظْلَمُونَtuẓ'lamūnabe wronged

Translation

And prepare for them whatever you able (to) of force and of tethered horses (to) terrify therewith (the) enemy (of) Allah and your enemy and others from besides them not (do) you know them (but) Allah knows them And whatever you spend from (any) thing in (the) way (of) Allah it will be fully repaid to you and you (will) not be wronged

Verse 61

۞ وَإِنwa-inAnd if
جَنَحُوا۟janaḥūthey incline
لِلسَّلْمِlilssalmito peace
فَٱجْنَحْfa-ij'naḥthen you (also) incline
لَهَاlahāto it
وَتَوَكَّلْwatawakkaland put (your) trust
عَلَىʿalāin
ٱللَّهِ ۚl-lahiAllah
إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed
هُوَhuwaHe
ٱلسَّمِيعُl-samīʿu(is) All-Hearer
ٱلْعَلِيمُl-ʿalīmuAll-Knower

Translation

And if they incline to peace then you (also) incline to it and put (your) trust in Allah Indeed He (is) All-Hearer All-Knower

Verse 62

وَإِنwa-inBut if
يُرِيدُوٓا۟yurīdūthey intend
أَنanto
يَخْدَعُوكَyakhdaʿūkadeceive you
فَإِنَّfa-innathen indeed
حَسْبَكَḥasbakais sufficient for you
ٱللَّهُ ۚl-lahuAllah
هُوَhuwaHe
ٱلَّذِىٓalladhī(is) the One Who
أَيَّدَكَayyadakasupported you
بِنَصْرِهِۦbinaṣrihiwith His help
وَبِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَwabil-mu'minīnaand with the believers

Translation

But if they intend to deceive you then indeed is sufficient for you Allah He (is) the One Who supported you with His help and with the believers

Verse 63

وَأَلَّفَwa-allafaAnd He (has) put affection
بَيْنَbaynabetween
قُلُوبِهِمْ ۚqulūbihimtheir hearts
لَوْlawIf
أَنفَقْتَanfaqtayou (had) spent
مَاmāwhatever
فِىfī(is) in
ٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earth
جَمِيعًۭاjamīʿanall
مَّآmānot
أَلَّفْتَallafta(could) you (have) put affection
بَيْنَbaynabetween
قُلُوبِهِمْqulūbihimtheir hearts
وَلَـٰكِنَّwalākinnabut
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
أَلَّفَallafa(has) put affection
بَيْنَهُمْ ۚbaynahumbetween them
إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, He
عَزِيزٌʿazīzun(is) All-Mighty
حَكِيمٌۭḥakīmunAll-Wise

Translation

And He (has) put affection between their hearts If you (had) spent whatever (is) in the earth all not (could) you (have) put affection between their hearts but Allah (has) put affection between them Indeed, He (is) All-Mighty All-Wise

Verse 64

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO
ٱلنَّبِىُّl-nabiyuProphet
حَسْبُكَḥasbukaSufficient for you
ٱللَّهُl-lahu(is) Allah
وَمَنِwamaniand whoever
ٱتَّبَعَكَittabaʿakafollows you
مِنَminaof
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīnathe believers

Translation

O Prophet Sufficient for you (is) Allah and whoever follows you of the believers

Verse 65

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO
ٱلنَّبِىُّl-nabiyuProphet
حَرِّضِḥarriḍiUrge
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīnathe believers
عَلَىʿalāto
ٱلْقِتَالِ ۚl-qitāli[the] fight
إِنinIf
يَكُنyakun(there) are
مِّنكُمْminkumamong you
عِشْرُونَʿish'rūnatwenty
صَـٰبِرُونَṣābirūnasteadfast
يَغْلِبُوا۟yaghlibūthey will overcome
مِا۟ئَتَيْنِ ۚmi-ataynitwo hundred
وَإِنwa-inAnd if
يَكُنyakun(there) are
مِّنكُمminkumamong you
مِّا۟ئَةٌۭmi-atuna hundred
يَغْلِبُوٓا۟yaghlibūthey will overcome
أَلْفًۭاalfana thousand
مِّنَminaof
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieve
بِأَنَّهُمْbi-annahumbecause they
قَوْمٌۭqawmun(are) a people
لَّاlā(who do) not
يَفْقَهُونَyafqahūnaunderstand

Translation

O Prophet Urge the believers to [the] fight If (there) are among you twenty steadfast they will overcome two hundred And if (there) are among you a hundred they will overcome a thousand of those who disbelieve because they (are) a people (who do) not understand

Verse 66

ٱلْـَٔـٰنَal-ānaNow
خَفَّفَkhaffafahas (been) lightened
ٱللَّهُl-lahu(by) Allah
عَنكُمْʿankumfor you
وَعَلِمَwaʿalimaand He knows
أَنَّannathat
فِيكُمْfīkumin you
ضَعْفًۭا ۚḍaʿfan(there) is weakness
فَإِنfa-inSo if
يَكُنyakun(there) are
مِّنكُمminkumamong you
مِّا۟ئَةٌۭmi-atuna hundred
صَابِرَةٌۭṣābiratunsteadfast
يَغْلِبُوا۟yaghlibūthey will overcome
مِا۟ئَتَيْنِ ۚmi-ataynitwo hundred
وَإِنwa-inAnd if
يَكُنyakun(there) are
مِّنكُمْminkumamong you
أَلْفٌۭalfuna thousand
يَغْلِبُوٓا۟yaghlibūthey will overcome
أَلْفَيْنِalfaynitwo thousand
بِإِذْنِbi-idh'niwith (the) permission
ٱللَّهِ ۗl-lahi(of) Allah
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
مَعَmaʿa(is) with
ٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَl-ṣābirīnathe steadfast

Translation

Now has (been) lightened (by) Allah for you and He knows that in you (there) is weakness So if (there) are among you a hundred steadfast they will overcome two hundred And if (there) are among you a thousand they will overcome two thousand with (the) permission (of) Allah And Allah (is) with the steadfast

Verse 67

مَاmāNot
كَانَkānais
لِنَبِىٍّlinabiyyinfor a Prophet
أَنanthat
يَكُونَyakūna(there) should be
لَهُۥٓlahufor him
أَسْرَىٰasrāprisoners of war
حَتَّىٰḥattāuntil
يُثْخِنَyuth'khinahe has battled strenuously
فِىfīin
ٱلْأَرْضِ ۚl-arḍithe land
تُرِيدُونَturīdūnaYou desire
عَرَضَʿaraḍa(the) commodities
ٱلدُّنْيَاl-dun'yā(of) the world
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahubut Allah
يُرِيدُyurīdudesires
ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ ۗl-ākhirata(for you) the Hereafter
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
عَزِيزٌʿazīzun(is) All-Mighty
حَكِيمٌۭḥakīmunAll-Wise

Translation

Not is for a Prophet that (there) should be for him prisoners of war until he has battled strenuously in the land You desire (the) commodities (of) the world but Allah desires (for you) the Hereafter And Allah (is) All-Mighty All-Wise

Verse 68

لَّوْلَاlawlāHad not
كِتَـٰبٌۭkitābunan ordainment
مِّنَminafrom
ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
سَبَقَsabaqapreceded
لَمَسَّكُمْlamassakumsurely (would) have touched you
فِيمَآfīmāfor what
أَخَذْتُمْakhadhtumyou took
عَذَابٌʿadhābuna punishment
عَظِيمٌۭʿaẓīmungreat

Translation

Had not an ordainment from Allah preceded surely (would) have touched you for what you took a punishment great

Verse 69

فَكُلُوا۟fakulūSo eat
مِمَّاmimmāfrom what
غَنِمْتُمْghanim'tumyou got as war booty
حَلَـٰلًۭاḥalālanlawful
طَيِّبًۭا ۚṭayyiban(and) good
وَٱتَّقُوا۟wa-ittaqūand fear
ٱللَّهَ ۚl-lahaAllah
إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
غَفُورٌۭghafūrun(is) Oft-Forgiving
رَّحِيمٌۭraḥīmunMost Merciful

Translation

So eat from what you got as war booty lawful (and) good and fear Allah Indeed Allah (is) Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful

Verse 70

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO
ٱلنَّبِىُّl-nabiyuProphet
قُلqulSay
لِّمَنlimanto whoever
فِىٓfī(is) in
أَيْدِيكُمaydīkumyour hands
مِّنَminaof
ٱلْأَسْرَىٰٓl-asrāthe captives
إِنinIf
يَعْلَمِyaʿlamiknows
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
فِىfīin
قُلُوبِكُمْqulūbikumyour hearts
خَيْرًۭاkhayranany good
يُؤْتِكُمْyu'tikumHe will give you
خَيْرًۭاkhayranbetter
مِّمَّآmimmāthan what
أُخِذَukhidhawas taken
مِنكُمْminkumfrom you
وَيَغْفِرْwayaghfirand He will forgive
لَكُمْ ۗlakumyou
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
غَفُورٌۭghafūrun(is) Oft-Forgiving
رَّحِيمٌۭraḥīmunMost Merciful

Translation

O Prophet Say to whoever (is) in your hands of the captives If knows Allah in your hearts any good He will give you better than what was taken from you and He will forgive you And Allah (is) Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful

Verse 71

وَإِنwa-inBut if
يُرِيدُوا۟yurīdūthey intend
خِيَانَتَكَkhiyānataka(to) betray you
فَقَدْfaqadcertainly
خَانُوا۟khānūthey have betrayed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
مِنminfrom
قَبْلُqablubefore
فَأَمْكَنَfa-amkanaSo He gave (you) power
مِنْهُمْ ۗmin'humover them
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
عَلِيمٌʿalīmun(is) All-Knower
حَكِيمٌḥakīmunAll-Wise

Translation

But if they intend (to) betray you certainly they have betrayed Allah from before So He gave (you) power over them And Allah (is) All-Knower All-Wise

Verse 72

إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieved
وَهَاجَرُوا۟wahājarūand emigrated
وَجَـٰهَدُوا۟wajāhadūand strove hard
بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْbi-amwālihimwith their wealth
وَأَنفُسِهِمْwa-anfusihimand their lives
فِىfīin
سَبِيلِsabīli(the) way
ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaand those who
ءَاوَوا۟āwawgave shelter
وَّنَصَرُوٓا۟wanaṣarūand helped
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikathose
بَعْضُهُمْbaʿḍuhumsome of them
أَوْلِيَآءُawliyāu(are) allies
بَعْضٍۢ ۚbaʿḍin(of) another
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaBut those who
ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieved
وَلَمْwalamand (did) not
يُهَاجِرُوا۟yuhājirūemigrate
مَاmā(it is) not
لَكُمlakumfor you
مِّنmin(of)
وَلَـٰيَتِهِمwalāyatihimtheir protection
مِّنmin(in)
شَىْءٍshayin(in) anything
حَتَّىٰḥattāuntil
يُهَاجِرُوا۟ ۚyuhājirūthey emigrate
وَإِنِwa-iniAnd if
ٱسْتَنصَرُوكُمْis'tanṣarūkumthey seek your help
فِىfīin
ٱلدِّينِl-dīnithe religion
فَعَلَيْكُمُfaʿalaykumuthen upon you
ٱلنَّصْرُl-naṣru(is to) help them
إِلَّاillāexcept
عَلَىٰʿalāagainst
قَوْمٍۭqawmina people
بَيْنَكُمْbaynakumbetween you
وَبَيْنَهُمwabaynahumand between them
مِّيثَـٰقٌۭ ۗmīthāqun(is) a treaty
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
بِمَاbimāof what
تَعْمَلُونَtaʿmalūnayou do
بَصِيرٌۭbaṣīrun(is) All-Seer

Translation

Indeed those who believed and emigrated and strove hard with their wealth and their lives in (the) way (of) Allah and those who gave shelter and helped those some of them (are) allies (of) another But those who believed and (did) not emigrate (it is) not for you (of) their protection (in) (in) anything until they emigrate And if they seek your help in the religion then upon you (is to) help them except against a people between you and between them (is) a treaty And Allah of what you do (is) All-Seer

Verse 73

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who
كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieve
بَعْضُهُمْbaʿḍuhumsome of them
أَوْلِيَآءُawliyāu(are) allies
بَعْضٍ ۚbaʿḍin(to) another
إِلَّاillāIf not
تَفْعَلُوهُtafʿalūhuyou do it
تَكُنtakun(there) will be
فِتْنَةٌۭfit'natunoppression
فِىfīin
ٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earth
وَفَسَادٌۭwafasādunand corruption
كَبِيرٌۭkabīrungreat

Translation

And those who disbelieve some of them (are) allies (to) another If not you do it (there) will be oppression in the earth and corruption great

Verse 74

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who
ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieved
وَهَاجَرُوا۟wahājarūand emigrated
وَجَـٰهَدُوا۟wajāhadūand strove hard
فِىfīin
سَبِيلِsabīli(the) way
ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaand those who
ءَاوَوا۟āwawgave shelter
وَّنَصَرُوٓا۟wanaṣarūand helped
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikathose
هُمُhumuthey (are)
ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَl-mu'minūnathe believers
حَقًّۭا ۚḥaqqan(in) truth
لَّهُمlahumFor them
مَّغْفِرَةٌۭmaghfiratun(is) forgiveness
وَرِزْقٌۭwariz'qunand a provision
كَرِيمٌۭkarīmunnoble

Translation

And those who believed and emigrated and strove hard in (the) way (of) Allah and those who gave shelter and helped those they (are) the believers (in) truth For them (is) forgiveness and a provision noble

Verse 75

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who
ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieved
مِنۢminfrom
بَعْدُbaʿduafterwards
وَهَاجَرُوا۟wahājarūand emigrated
وَجَـٰهَدُوا۟wajāhadūand strove hard
مَعَكُمْmaʿakumwith you
فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَfa-ulāikathen those
مِنكُمْ ۚminkum(are) of you
وَأُو۟لُوا۟wa-ulūBut those
ٱلْأَرْحَامِl-arḥāmi(of) blood relationship
بَعْضُهُمْbaʿḍuhumsome of them
أَوْلَىٰawlā(are) nearer
بِبَعْضٍۢbibaʿḍinto another
فِىfīin
كِتَـٰبِkitābi(the) Book
ٱللَّهِ ۗl-lahi(of) Allah
إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
بِكُلِّbikulliof every
شَىْءٍshayinthing
عَلِيمٌۢʿalīmun(is) All-Knower

Translation

And those who believed from afterwards and emigrated and strove hard with you then those (are) of you But those (of) blood relationship some of them (are) nearer to another in (the) Book (of) Allah Indeed Allah of every thing (is) All-Knower
