Chapter 81Meccan29 Verses

Verse 1

إِذَاidhāWhen
ٱلشَّمْسُl-shamsuthe sun
كُوِّرَتْkuwwiratis wrapped up

Translation

When the sun is wrapped up

Verse 2

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
ٱلنُّجُومُl-nujūmuthe stars
ٱنكَدَرَتْinkadaratfall, losing their luster

Translation

And when the stars fall, losing their luster

Verse 3

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
ٱلْجِبَالُl-jibāluthe mountains
سُيِّرَتْsuyyiratare moved away

Translation

And when the mountains are moved away

Verse 4

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
ٱلْعِشَارُl-ʿishāruthe full-term she-camels
عُطِّلَتْʿuṭṭilat(are) left untended

Translation

And when the full-term she-camels (are) left untended

Verse 5

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
ٱلْوُحُوشُl-wuḥūshuthe wild beasts
حُشِرَتْḥushiratare gathered

Translation

And when the wild beasts are gathered

Verse 6

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
ٱلْبِحَارُl-biḥāruthe seas
سُجِّرَتْsujjiratare made to overflow

Translation

And when the seas are made to overflow

Verse 7

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
ٱلنُّفُوسُl-nufūsuthe souls
زُوِّجَتْzuwwijatare paired

Translation

And when the souls are paired

Verse 8

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
ٱلْمَوْءُۥدَةُl-mawūdatuthe female infant buried alive
سُئِلَتْsu-ilatis asked

Translation

And when the female infant buried alive is asked

Verse 9

بِأَىِّbi-ayyiFor what
ذَنۢبٍۢdhanbinsin
قُتِلَتْqutilatshe was killed

Translation

For what sin she was killed

Verse 10

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
ٱلصُّحُفُl-ṣuḥufuthe pages
نُشِرَتْnushiratare laid open

Translation

And when the pages are laid open

Verse 11

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
ٱلسَّمَآءُl-samāuthe sky
كُشِطَتْkushiṭatis stripped away

Translation

And when the sky is stripped away

Verse 12

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
ٱلْجَحِيمُl-jaḥīmuthe Hellfire
سُعِّرَتْsuʿʿiratis set ablaze

Translation

And when the Hellfire is set ablaze

Verse 13

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
ٱلْجَنَّةُl-janatuParadise
أُزْلِفَتْuz'lifatis brought near

Translation

And when Paradise is brought near

Verse 14

عَلِمَتْʿalimatWill know
نَفْسٌۭnafsuna soul
مَّآmāwhat
أَحْضَرَتْaḥḍaratit has brought

Translation

Will know a soul what it has brought

Verse 15

فَلَآfalāBut nay
أُقْسِمُuq'simuI swear
بِٱلْخُنَّسِbil-khunasiby the retreating planets

Translation

But nay I swear by the retreating planets

Verse 16

ٱلْجَوَارِal-jawāriThose that run
ٱلْكُنَّسِl-kunasi(and) disappear

Translation

Those that run (and) disappear

Verse 17

وَٱلَّيْلِwa-al-layliAnd the night
إِذَاidhāwhen
عَسْعَسَʿasʿasait departs

Translation

And the night when it departs

Verse 18

وَٱلصُّبْحِwal-ṣub'ḥiAnd the dawn
إِذَاidhāwhen
تَنَفَّسَtanaffasait breathes

Translation

And the dawn when it breathes

Verse 19

إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, it
لَقَوْلُlaqawlu(is) surely a word
رَسُولٍۢrasūlin(of) a Messenger
كَرِيمٍۢkarīminnoble

Translation

Indeed, it (is) surely a word (of) a Messenger noble

Verse 20

ذِىdhīPossessor of
قُوَّةٍquwwatinpower
عِندَʿindawith
ذِىdhī(the) Owner of
ٱلْعَرْشِl-ʿarshithe Throne
مَكِينٍۢmakīninsecure

Translation

Possessor of power with (the) Owner of the Throne secure

Verse 21

مُّطَاعٍۢmuṭāʿinOne to be obeyed
ثَمَّthammaand
أَمِينٍۢamīnintrustworthy

Translation

One to be obeyed and trustworthy

Verse 22

وَمَاwamāAnd not
صَاحِبُكُمṣāḥibukum(is) your companion
بِمَجْنُونٍۢbimajnūninmad

Translation

And not (is) your companion mad

Verse 23

وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainly
رَءَاهُraāhuhe saw him
بِٱلْأُفُقِbil-ufuqiin the horizon
ٱلْمُبِينِl-mubīnithe clear

Translation

And certainly he saw him in the horizon the clear

Verse 24

وَمَاwamāAnd not
هُوَhuwahe (is)
عَلَىʿalāon
ٱلْغَيْبِl-ghaybithe unseen
بِضَنِينٍۢbiḍanīnina withholder

Translation

And not he (is) on the unseen a withholder

Verse 25

وَمَاwamāAnd not
هُوَhuwait
بِقَوْلِbiqawli(is the) word
شَيْطَـٰنٍۢshayṭānin(of) Shaitaan
رَّجِيمٍۢrajīminaccursed

Translation

And not it (is the) word (of) Shaitaan accursed

Verse 26

فَأَيْنَfa-aynaSo where
تَذْهَبُونَtadhhabūnaare you going

Translation

So where are you going

Verse 27

إِنْinNot
هُوَhuwait
إِلَّاillā(is) except
ذِكْرٌۭdhik'runa reminder
لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَlil'ʿālamīnato the worlds

Translation

Not it (is) except a reminder to the worlds

Verse 28

لِمَنlimanFor whoever
شَآءَshāawills
مِنكُمْminkumamong you
أَنanto
يَسْتَقِيمَyastaqīmatake a straight way

Translation

For whoever wills among you to take a straight way

Verse 29

وَمَاwamāAnd not
تَشَآءُونَtashāūnayou will
إِلَّآillāexcept
أَنanthat
يَشَآءَyashāawills
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
رَبُّrabbuLord
ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَl-ʿālamīna(of) the worlds

Translation

And not you will except that wills Allah Lord (of) the worlds
