The Overwhelming

Chapter 88Meccan26 Verses

Verse 1

هَلْhalHas
أَتَىٰكَatāka(there) come to you
حَدِيثُḥadīthu(the) news
ٱلْغَـٰشِيَةِl-ghāshiyati(of) the Overwhelming

Translation

Has (there) come to you (the) news (of) the Overwhelming

Verse 2

وُجُوهٌۭwujūhunFaces
يَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat Day
خَـٰشِعَةٌkhāshiʿatun(will be) humbled

Translation

Faces that Day (will be) humbled

Verse 3

عَامِلَةٌۭʿāmilatunLaboring
نَّاصِبَةٌۭnāṣibatunexhausted

Translation

Laboring exhausted

Verse 4

تَصْلَىٰtaṣlāThey will burn
نَارًاnāran(in) a Fire
حَامِيَةًۭḥāmiyatanintensely hot

Translation

They will burn (in) a Fire intensely hot

Verse 5

تُسْقَىٰtus'qāThey will be given to drink
مِنْminfrom
عَيْنٍʿaynina spring
ءَانِيَةٍۢāniyatinboiling

Translation

They will be given to drink from a spring boiling

Verse 6

لَّيْسَlaysaNot is
لَهُمْlahumfor them
طَعَامٌṭaʿāmunfood
إِلَّاillāexcept
مِنminfrom
ضَرِيعٍۢḍarīʿina bitter thorny plant

Translation

Not is for them food except from a bitter thorny plant

Verse 7

لَّاlāNot
يُسْمِنُyus'minuit nourishes
وَلَاwalāand not
يُغْنِىyugh'nīit avails
مِنminfrom
جُوعٍۢjūʿinhunger

Translation

Not it nourishes and not it avails from hunger

Verse 8

وُجُوهٌۭwujūhunFaces
يَوْمَئِذٍۢyawma-idhinthat Day
نَّاعِمَةٌۭnāʿimatun(will be) joyful

Translation

Faces that Day (will be) joyful

Verse 9

لِّسَعْيِهَاlisaʿyihāWith their effort
رَاضِيَةٌۭrāḍiyatunsatisfied

Translation

With their effort satisfied

Verse 10

فِىfīIn
جَنَّةٍjannatina garden
عَالِيَةٍۢʿāliyatinelevated

Translation

In a garden elevated

Verse 11

لَّاlāNot
تَسْمَعُtasmaʿuthey will hear
فِيهَاfīhātherein
لَـٰغِيَةًۭlāghiyatanvain talk

Translation

Not they will hear therein vain talk

Verse 12

فِيهَاfīhāTherein
عَيْنٌۭʿaynun(will be) a spring
جَارِيَةٌۭjāriyatunflowing

Translation

Therein (will be) a spring flowing

Verse 13

فِيهَاfīhāTherein
سُرُرٌۭsururun(will be) thrones
مَّرْفُوعَةٌۭmarfūʿatunraised high

Translation

Therein (will be) thrones raised high

Verse 14

وَأَكْوَابٌۭwa-akwābunAnd cups
مَّوْضُوعَةٌۭmawḍūʿatunput in place

Translation

And cups put in place

Verse 15

وَنَمَارِقُwanamāriquAnd cushions
مَصْفُوفَةٌۭmaṣfūfatunlined up

Translation

And cushions lined up

Verse 16

وَزَرَابِىُّwazarābiyyuAnd carpets
مَبْثُوثَةٌmabthūthatunspread out

Translation

And carpets spread out

Verse 17

أَفَلَاafalāThen do not
يَنظُرُونَyanẓurūnathey look
إِلَىilātowards
ٱلْإِبِلِl-ibilithe camels
كَيْفَkayfahow
خُلِقَتْkhuliqatthey are created

Translation

Then do not they look towards the camels how they are created

Verse 18

وَإِلَىwa-ilāAnd towards
ٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāithe sky
كَيْفَkayfahow
رُفِعَتْrufiʿatit is raised

Translation

And towards the sky how it is raised

Verse 19

وَإِلَىwa-ilāAnd towards
ٱلْجِبَالِl-jibālithe mountains
كَيْفَkayfahow
نُصِبَتْnuṣibatthey are fixed

Translation

And towards the mountains how they are fixed

Verse 20

وَإِلَىwa-ilāAnd towards
ٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earth
كَيْفَkayfahow
سُطِحَتْsuṭiḥatit is spread out

Translation

And towards the earth how it is spread out

Verse 21

فَذَكِّرْfadhakkirSo remind
إِنَّمَآinnamāonly
أَنتَantayou
مُذَكِّرٌۭmudhakkirun(are) a reminder

Translation

So remind only you (are) a reminder

Verse 22

لَّسْتَlastaYou are not
عَلَيْهِمʿalayhimover them
بِمُصَيْطِرٍbimuṣayṭirina controller

Translation

You are not over them a controller

Verse 23

إِلَّاillāBut
مَنmanwhoever
تَوَلَّىٰtawallāturns away
وَكَفَرَwakafaraand disbelieves

Translation

But whoever turns away and disbelieves

Verse 24

فَيُعَذِّبُهُfayuʿadhibuhuThen will punish him
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
ٱلْعَذَابَl-ʿadhāba(with) the punishment
ٱلْأَكْبَرَl-akbaragreatest

Translation

Then will punish him Allah (with) the punishment greatest

Verse 25

إِنَّinnaIndeed
إِلَيْنَآilaynāto Us
إِيَابَهُمْiyābahum(will be) their return

Translation

Indeed to Us (will be) their return

Verse 26

ثُمَّthummaThen
إِنَّinnaindeed
عَلَيْنَاʿalaynāupon Us
حِسَابَهُمḥisābahum(is) their account

Translation

Then indeed upon Us (is) their account
