Chapter 89Meccan30 Verses

Verse 1

وَٱلْفَجْرِwal-fajriBy the dawn

Translation

By the dawn

Verse 2

وَلَيَالٍwalayālinAnd the nights
عَشْرٍۢʿashrinten

Translation

And the nights ten

Verse 3

وَٱلشَّفْعِwal-shafʿiAnd the even
وَٱلْوَتْرِwal-watriand the odd

Translation

And the even and the odd

Verse 4

وَٱلَّيْلِwa-al-layliAnd the night
إِذَاidhāwhen
يَسْرِyasriit passes

Translation

And the night when it passes

Verse 5

هَلْhalIs
فِىin
ذَٰلِكَdhālikathat
قَسَمٌۭqasamun(not) an oath
لِّذِىlidhīfor those
حِجْرٍḥij'rinwho understand

Translation

Is in that (not) an oath for those who understand

Verse 6

أَلَمْalamDid not
تَرَtarayou see
كَيْفَkayfahow
فَعَلَfaʿaladealt
رَبُّكَrabbukayour Lord
بِعَادٍbiʿādinwith Aad

Translation

Did not you see how dealt your Lord with Aad

Verse 7

إِرَمَiramaIram
ذَاتِdhātipossessors (of)
ٱلْعِمَادِl-ʿimādilofty pillars

Translation

Iram possessors (of) lofty pillars

Verse 8

ٱلَّتِىallatīWhich
لَمْlamnot
يُخْلَقْyukh'laqhad been created
مِثْلُهَاmith'luhālike them
فِىin
ٱلْبِلَـٰدِl-bilādithe cities

Translation

Which not had been created like them in the cities

Verse 9

وَثَمُودَwathamūdaAnd Thamud
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnawho
جَابُوا۟jābūcarved out
ٱلصَّخْرَl-ṣakhrathe rocks
بِٱلْوَادِbil-wādiin the valley

Translation

And Thamud who carved out the rocks in the valley

Verse 10

وَفِرْعَوْنَwafir'ʿawnaAnd Firaun
ذِىdhīowner of
ٱلْأَوْتَادِl-awtādistakes

Translation

And Firaun owner of stakes

Verse 11

ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaWho
طَغَوْا۟ṭaghawtransgressed
فِىin
ٱلْبِلَـٰدِl-bilādithe lands

Translation

Who transgressed in the lands

Verse 12

فَأَكْثَرُوا۟fa-aktharūAnd (made) much
فِيهَاfīhātherein
ٱلْفَسَادَl-fasādacorruption

Translation

And (made) much therein corruption

Verse 13

فَصَبَّfaṣabbaSo poured
عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimon them
رَبُّكَrabbukayour Lord
سَوْطَsawṭascourge
عَذَابٍʿadhābin(of) punishment

Translation

So poured on them your Lord scourge (of) punishment

Verse 14

إِنَّinnaIndeed
رَبَّكَrabbakayour Lord
لَبِٱلْمِرْصَادِlabil-mir'ṣādi(is) surely Ever Watchful

Translation

Indeed your Lord (is) surely Ever Watchful

Verse 15

فَأَمَّاfa-ammāAnd as for
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُl-insānuman
إِذَاidhāwhen
مَاdoes
ٱبْتَلَىٰهُib'talāhutry him
رَبُّهُۥrabbuhuhis Lord
فَأَكْرَمَهُۥfa-akramahuand is generous to him
وَنَعَّمَهُۥwanaʿʿamahuand favors him
فَيَقُولُfayaqūluhe says
رَبِّىٓrabbīMy Lord
أَكْرَمَنِakramanihas honored me

Translation

And as for man when does try him his Lord and is generous to him and favors him he says My Lord has honored me

Verse 16

وَأَمَّآwa-ammāBut
إِذَاidhāwhen
مَاdoes
ٱبْتَلَىٰهُib'talāhuHe try him
فَقَدَرَfaqadaraand restricts
عَلَيْهِʿalayhifor him
رِزْقَهُۥriz'qahuhis provision
فَيَقُولُfayaqūluthen he says
رَبِّىٓrabbīMy Lord
أَهَـٰنَنِahānani(has) humiliated me

Translation

But when does He try him and restricts for him his provision then he says My Lord (has) humiliated me

Verse 17

كَلَّا ۖkallāNay
بَلbalBut
لَّاnot
تُكْرِمُونَtuk'rimūnayou honor
ٱلْيَتِيمَl-yatīmathe orphan

Translation

Nay But not you honor the orphan

Verse 18

وَلَاwalāAnd not
تَحَـٰٓضُّونَtaḥāḍḍūnayou feel the urge
عَلَىٰʿalāto
طَعَامِṭaʿāmifeed
ٱلْمِسْكِينِl-mis'kīnithe poor

Translation

And not you feel the urge to feed the poor

Verse 19

وَتَأْكُلُونَwatakulūnaAnd you consume
ٱلتُّرَاثَl-turāthathe inheritance
أَكْلًۭاaklandevouring
لَّمًّۭاlammanaltogether

Translation

And you consume the inheritance devouring altogether

Verse 20

وَتُحِبُّونَwatuḥibbūnaAnd you love
ٱلْمَالَl-mālawealth
حُبًّۭاḥubban(with) love
جَمًّۭاjammanimmense

Translation

And you love wealth (with) love immense

Verse 21

كَلَّآkallāNay
إِذَاidhāWhen
دُكَّتِdukkatiis leveled
ٱلْأَرْضُl-arḍuthe earth
دَكًّۭاdakkanpounded
دَكًّۭاdakkan(and) crushed

Translation

Nay When is leveled the earth pounded (and) crushed

Verse 22

وَجَآءَwajāaAnd comes
رَبُّكَrabbukayour Lord
وَٱلْمَلَكُwal-malakuand the Angels
صَفًّۭاṣaffanrank
صَفًّۭاṣaffan(upon) rank

Translation

And comes your Lord and the Angels rank (upon) rank

Verse 23

وَجِا۟ىٓءَwajīaAnd is brought
يَوْمَئِذٍۭyawma-idhinthat Day
بِجَهَنَّمَ ۚbijahannamaHell
يَوْمَئِذٍۢyawma-idhinThat Day
يَتَذَكَّرُyatadhakkaruwill remember
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُl-insānuman
وَأَنَّىٰwa-annābut how
لَهُlahu(will be) for him
ٱلذِّكْرَىٰl-dhik'rāthe remembrance

Translation

And is brought that Day Hell That Day will remember man but how (will be) for him the remembrance

Verse 24

يَقُولُyaqūluHe will say
يَـٰلَيْتَنِىyālaytanīO I wish
قَدَّمْتُqaddamtuI had sent forth
لِحَيَاتِىliḥayātīfor my life

Translation

He will say O I wish I had sent forth for my life

Verse 25

فَيَوْمَئِذٍۢfayawma-idhinSo that Day
لَّاnot
يُعَذِّبُyuʿadhibuwill punish
عَذَابَهُۥٓʿadhābahu(as) His punishment
أَحَدٌۭaḥadunanyone

Translation

So that Day not will punish (as) His punishment anyone

Verse 26

وَلَاwalāAnd not
يُوثِقُyūthiquwill bind
وَثَاقَهُۥٓwathāqahu(as) His binding
أَحَدٌۭaḥadunanyone

Translation

And not will bind (as) His binding anyone

Verse 27

يَـٰٓأَيَّتُهَاyāayyatuhāO
ٱلنَّفْسُl-nafsusoul
ٱلْمُطْمَئِنَّةُl-muṭ'ma-inatuwho is satisfied

Translation

O soul who is satisfied

Verse 28

ٱرْجِعِىٓir'jiʿīReturn
إِلَىٰilāto
رَبِّكِrabbikiyour Lord
رَاضِيَةًۭrāḍiyatanwell pleased
مَّرْضِيَّةًۭmarḍiyyatanand pleasing

Translation

Return to your Lord well pleased and pleasing

Verse 29

فَٱدْخُلِىfa-ud'khulīSo enter
فِىamong
عِبَـٰدِىʿibādīMy slaves

Translation

So enter among My slaves

Verse 30

وَٱدْخُلِىwa-ud'khulīAnd enter
جَنَّتِىjannatīMy Paradise

Translation

And enter My Paradise
