Chapter 90Meccan20 Verses

Verse 1

لَآlāNay

أُقْسِمُuq'simuI swear

بِهَـٰذَاbihādhāby this

ٱلْبَلَدِl-baladicity

Translation

Nay I swear by this city

Verse 2

وَأَنتَwa-antaAnd you

حِلٌّۢḥillun(are) free (to dwell)

بِهَـٰذَاbihādhāin this

ٱلْبَلَدِl-baladicity

Translation

And you (are) free (to dwell) in this city

Verse 3

وَوَالِدٍۢwawālidinAnd the begetter

وَمَاwamāand what

وَلَدَwaladahe begot

Translation

And the begetter and what he begot

Verse 4

لَقَدْlaqadCertainly

خَلَقْنَاkhalaqnāWe have created

ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَl-insānaman

فِىfī(to be) in

كَبَدٍkabadinhardship

Translation

Certainly We have created man (to be) in hardship

Verse 5

أَيَحْسَبُayaḥsabuDoes he think

أَنanthat

لَّنlannot

يَقْدِرَyaqdirahas power

عَلَيْهِʿalayhiover him

أَحَدٌۭaḥadunanyone

Translation

Does he think that not has power over him anyone

Verse 6

يَقُولُyaqūluHe will say

أَهْلَكْتُahlaktuI have squandered

مَالًۭاmālanwealth

لُّبَدًاlubadanabundant

Translation

He will say I have squandered wealth abundant

Verse 7

أَيَحْسَبُayaḥsabuDoes he think

أَنanthat

لَّمْlamnot

يَرَهُۥٓyarahusees him

أَحَدٌaḥadunanyone

Translation

Does he think that not sees him anyone

Verse 8

أَلَمْalamHave not

نَجْعَلnajʿalWe made

لَّهُۥlahufor him

عَيْنَيْنِʿaynaynitwo eyes

Translation

Have not We made for him two eyes

Verse 9

وَلِسَانًۭاwalisānanAnd a tongue

وَشَفَتَيْنِwashafatayniand two lips

Translation

And a tongue and two lips

Verse 10

وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُwahadaynāhuAnd shown him

ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِl-najdaynithe two ways

Translation

And shown him the two ways

Verse 11

فَلَاfalāBut not

ٱقْتَحَمَiq'taḥamahe has attempted

ٱلْعَقَبَةَl-ʿaqabatathe steep path

Translation

But not he has attempted the steep path

Verse 12

وَمَآwamāAnd what

أَدْرَىٰكَadrākacan make you know

مَاmāwhat

ٱلْعَقَبَةُl-ʿaqabatuthe steep path (is)

Translation

And what can make you know what the steep path (is)

Verse 13

فَكُّfakku(It is) freeing

رَقَبَةٍraqabatina neck

Translation

(It is) freeing a neck

Verse 14

أَوْawOr

إِطْعَـٰمٌۭiṭ'ʿāmunfeeding

فِىfīin

يَوْمٍۢyawmina day

ذِىdhīof

مَسْغَبَةٍۢmasghabatinsevere hunger

Translation

Or feeding in a day of severe hunger

Verse 15

يَتِيمًۭاyatīmanAn orphan

ذَاdhāof

مَقْرَبَةٍmaqrabatinnear relationship

Translation

An orphan of near relationship

Verse 16

أَوْawOr

مِسْكِينًۭاmis'kīnana needy person

ذَاdhāin

مَتْرَبَةٍۢmatrabatinmisery

Translation

Or a needy person in misery

Verse 17

ثُمَّthummaThen

كَانَkānahe is

مِنَminaof

ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who

ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieve

وَتَوَاصَوْا۟watawāṣawand enjoin (each other)

بِٱلصَّبْرِbil-ṣabrito patience

وَتَوَاصَوْا۟watawāṣawand enjoin (each other)

بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِbil-marḥamatito compassion

Translation

Then he is of those who believe and enjoin (each other) to patience and enjoin (each other) to compassion

Verse 18

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThose

أَصْحَـٰبُaṣḥābu(are the) companions

ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِl-maymanati(of) the right (hand)

Translation

Those (are the) companions (of) the right (hand)

Verse 19

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaBut those who

كَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieve

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَاbiāyātināin Our Verses

هُمْhumthey

أَصْحَـٰبُaṣḥābu(are the) companions

ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِl-mashamati(of) the left (hand)

Translation

But those who disbelieve in Our Verses they (are the) companions (of) the left (hand)

Verse 20

عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimOver them

نَارٌۭnārun(will be the) Fire

مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢmu'ṣadatunclosed in

Translation

Over them (will be the) Fire closed in
