The Sun

Chapter 91Meccan15 Verses

Verse 1

وَٱلشَّمْسِwal-shamsiBy the sun
وَضُحَىٰهَاwaḍuḥāhāand its brightness

Translation

By the sun and its brightness

Verse 2

وَٱلْقَمَرِwal-qamariAnd the moon
إِذَاidhāwhen
تَلَىٰهَاtalāhāit follows it

Translation

And the moon when it follows it

Verse 3

وَٱلنَّهَارِwal-nahāriAnd the day
إِذَاidhāwhen
جَلَّىٰهَاjallāhāit displays it

Translation

And the day when it displays it

Verse 4

وَٱلَّيْلِwa-al-layliAnd the night
إِذَاidhāwhen
يَغْشَىٰهَاyaghshāhāit covers it

Translation

And the night when it covers it

Verse 5

وَٱلسَّمَآءِwal-samāiAnd the heaven
وَمَاwamāand (He) Who
بَنَىٰهَاbanāhāconstructed it

Translation

And the heaven and (He) Who constructed it

Verse 6

وَٱلْأَرْضِwal-arḍiAnd the earth
وَمَاwamāand by (He) Who
طَحَىٰهَاṭaḥāhāspread it

Translation

And the earth and by (He) Who spread it

Verse 7

وَنَفْسٍۢwanafsinAnd (the) soul
وَمَاwamāand (He) Who
سَوَّىٰهَاsawwāhāproportioned it

Translation

And (the) soul and (He) Who proportioned it

Verse 8

فَأَلْهَمَهَاfa-alhamahāAnd He inspired it
فُجُورَهَاfujūrahā(to distinguish) its wickedness
وَتَقْوَىٰهَاwataqwāhāand its righteousness

Translation

And He inspired it (to distinguish) its wickedness and its righteousness

Verse 9

قَدْqadIndeed
أَفْلَحَaflaḥahe succeeds
مَنmanwho
زَكَّىٰهَاzakkāhāpurifies it

Translation

Indeed he succeeds who purifies it

Verse 10

وَقَدْwaqadAnd indeed
خَابَkhābahe fails
مَنmanwho
دَسَّىٰهَاdassāhāburies it

Translation

And indeed he fails who buries it

Verse 11

كَذَّبَتْkadhabatDenied
ثَمُودُthamūduThamud
بِطَغْوَىٰهَآbiṭaghwāhāby their transgression

Translation

Denied Thamud by their transgression

Verse 12

إِذِidhiWhen
ٱنۢبَعَثَinbaʿatha(was) sent forth
أَشْقَىٰهَاashqāhā(the) most wicked of them

Translation

When (was) sent forth (the) most wicked of them

Verse 13

فَقَالَfaqālaBut said
لَهُمْlahumto them
رَسُولُrasūlu(the) Messenger
ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
نَاقَةَnāqata(It is the) she-camel
ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
وَسُقْيَـٰهَاwasuq'yāhāand her drink

Translation

But said to them (the) Messenger (of) Allah (It is the) she-camel (of) Allah and her drink

Verse 14

فَكَذَّبُوهُfakadhabūhuBut they denied him
فَعَقَرُوهَاfaʿaqarūhāand they hamstrung her
فَدَمْدَمَfadamdamaSo destroyed
عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimthem
رَبُّهُمrabbuhumtheir Lord
بِذَنۢبِهِمْbidhanbihimfor their sin
فَسَوَّىٰهَاfasawwāhāand leveled them

Translation

But they denied him and they hamstrung her So destroyed them their Lord for their sin and leveled them

Verse 15

وَلَاwalāAnd not
يَخَافُyakhāfuHe fears
عُقْبَـٰهَاʿuq'bāhāits consequences

Translation

And not He fears its consequences
