Chapter 96Meccan19 Verses

Verse 1

ٱقْرَأْiq'raRead
بِٱسْمِbi-is'miin (the) name
رَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lord
ٱلَّذِىalladhīthe One Who
خَلَقَkhalaqacreated

Translation

Read in (the) name (of) your Lord the One Who created

Verse 2

خَلَقَkhalaqaHe created
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَl-insānaman
مِنْminfrom
عَلَقٍʿalaqina clinging substance

Translation

He created man from a clinging substance

Verse 3

ٱقْرَأْiq'raRead
وَرَبُّكَwarabbukaand your Lord
ٱلْأَكْرَمُl-akramu(is) the Most Generous

Translation

Read and your Lord (is) the Most Generous

Verse 4

ٱلَّذِىalladhīThe One Who
عَلَّمَʿallamataught
بِٱلْقَلَمِbil-qalamiby the pen

Translation

The One Who taught by the pen

Verse 5

عَلَّمَʿallamaTaught
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَl-insānaman
مَاmāwhat
لَمْlamnot
يَعْلَمْyaʿlamhe knew

Translation

Taught man what not he knew

Verse 6

كَلَّآkallāNay
إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَl-insānaman
لَيَطْغَىٰٓlayaṭghāsurely transgresses

Translation

Nay Indeed man surely transgresses

Verse 7

أَنanThat
رَّءَاهُraāhuhe sees himself
ٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓis'taghnāself-sufficient

Translation

That he sees himself self-sufficient

Verse 8

إِنَّinnaIndeed
إِلَىٰilāto
رَبِّكَrabbikayour Lord
ٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓl-ruj'ʿā(is) the return

Translation

Indeed to your Lord (is) the return

Verse 9

أَرَءَيْتَara-aytaHave you seen
ٱلَّذِىalladhīthe one who
يَنْهَىٰyanhāforbids

Translation

Have you seen the one who forbids

Verse 10

عَبْدًاʿabdanA slave
إِذَاidhāwhen
صَلَّىٰٓṣallāhe prays

Translation

A slave when he prays

Verse 11

أَرَءَيْتَara-aytaHave you seen
إِنinif
كَانَkānahe is
عَلَىʿalāupon
ٱلْهُدَىٰٓl-hudā[the] guidance

Translation

Have you seen if he is upon [the] guidance

Verse 12

أَوْawOr
أَمَرَamarahe enjoins
بِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓbil-taqwā[of the] righteousness

Translation

Or he enjoins [of the] righteousness

Verse 13

أَرَءَيْتَara-aytaHave you seen
إِنinif
كَذَّبَkadhabahe denies
وَتَوَلَّىٰٓwatawallāand turns away

Translation

Have you seen if he denies and turns away

Verse 14

أَلَمْalamDoes not
يَعْلَمyaʿlamhe know
بِأَنَّbi-annathat
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
يَرَىٰyarāsees

Translation

Does not he know that Allah sees

Verse 15

كَلَّاkallāNay
لَئِنla-inIf
لَّمْlamnot
يَنتَهِyantahihe desists
لَنَسْفَعًۢاlanasfaʿansurely We will drag him
بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِbil-nāṣiyatiby the forelock

Translation

Nay If not he desists surely We will drag him by the forelock

Verse 16

نَاصِيَةٍۢnāṣiyatinA forelock
كَـٰذِبَةٍkādhibatinlying
خَاطِئَةٍۢkhāṭi-atinsinful

Translation

A forelock lying sinful

Verse 17

فَلْيَدْعُfalyadʿuThen let him call
نَادِيَهُۥnādiyahuhis associates

Translation

Then let him call his associates

Verse 18

سَنَدْعُsanadʿuWe will call
ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَl-zabāniyatathe Angels of Hell

Translation

We will call the Angels of Hell

Verse 19

كَلَّاkallāNay
لَاlā(Do) not
تُطِعْهُtuṭiʿ'huobey him
وَٱسْجُدْwa-us'judBut prostrate
وَٱقْتَرِب ۩wa-iq'tariband draw near (to Allah)

Translation

Nay (Do) not obey him But prostrate and draw near (to Allah)
